' UNITED STATES Enwr v a, BAsKIir, or mnnnnnnniucn; irrssoum. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN T. BAsKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to gloves or mittens and more particularly to working mens gloves; the object of the invention being to provide a glove wherein the thumb is so constructed and arranged, relative to the other parts, that the glove may be worn on either hand.
In accomplishing this object, I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I illustrates a glove, constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a detail view of the body portion of the glove.
Fig. III is a detail view of the thumb member.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates the body of the glove, which is preferably formed from a single piece of material, such as cotton fabric, and has the fingers 2; the seam 3 preferably following one of the finger seams, so that the stitching of said seam and the finger seam may be continuous. At one edge of the body portion, the material is cutaway, and the loose edges of the thumb portion 4 are lapped thereover andstitched from near the base of the thumb to a point adjacent to the wrist position, in order to provide loose flaps 5 on the thumb portion and the wrist portions 6 on the body 1, so that the thumb part will fit close at the base ofthe hand, but is free from there to the wrist in order that the glove may comfortably fit either hand. The ends of the glove memberstare preferably provided with extended wrist pieces 5 and spe ens a rate amm- Patented. Jul 28, 1914. Application filed June 21, 1911.
Serial No. 634,539.
6, in order to better wrist.
As a fastener for theglove, I provide a strap extension 7 on one of the wrist flaps 5,
and a strap extension 8 of greater length on protect the wearers the other flap, and provide the extension 7 with button-holes 7 and the extension 8 with a button 8, so that the glove may be fastened to the wrist when in use.'
In using the. glove, it is pulledover the} hand in the usual manner and the loose wrist strap extensions fastened. With the With a glove of the present construction, should the alm of one glove become worn before that of the other, the gloves may be changed about so that they may be used until both are worn out.
Having thus described. my invention, what I claim asnew therein and desire to secur by Letters-Patent is I 1. A glove comprising a body member and a thumb inemberg the body member having finger portions, a, palm portion and a wrist portion; said palm and wrist portions having a deep incut in one side, the thumb mein ber having a thumb portion, a ball portion and wrist flaps; said ball portion being open at one side and secured to the pal P rtion of the body member, strap extensions of unequal length on the wrist flaps, adapted to lie on eachside of the wrist portion of the body member, and fastening devices on said strap extensions for'securing the glove to the wrist. c c I 2. A glove comprising a. body member consisting of a single piece of material cut to form wrist, palm and finger portions,
with the stock .for the first and fourth fingers left uncut and folded at the center thereof, and with portions of thesecond and third fingers lying adjacent the free ends of said member; the free ends being stitched to the free edges of the palm of said member and the free edges of portion, for the purpose set forth. 10 the finger portions being stitched, and a In testimony whereof I afiix my signethumb member consisting of a single piece ture in presence of two Witnesses.
