V SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,000, dated February 23, 1904.

Application filed August 4, 1900. Serial No. 25,880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WARREN B. PnILLrPs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to 'make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in gloves and mittens; and the/object thereof is to afford a glove or mitten having a wristband which will contract about the wrist and which will not stretch lengthwise respecting the kglovle-body when pulling the glove upon the I accomplish my object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan showing a glove-blank with the wristband attached, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a completed glove.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, and referring now to the same, 3 is a glove-body, and 5 is an elastic band secured to the top edge of the glove-body. The said band is composed of non-yieldmg cords 7, which range lengthwise respecting the glove-body, and elastic strands 7 of india-rubber, which are interwovenwith said non-yielding cords and range laterally respecting the glove-body. This band is kept slightly stretched while it is being sewed to the top of the glove-body, and afterward when tension is removed from the band a series of gathers 8 form in the glove-body at its juncture with the band. The stitches 6, which unite the band and glove-body, range zigzag, so as not to hinder stretching in a lateral direction. The

1 and 2 of the glovebody and thecorresponding edges of the band are united after the band is stitched to the glove-body. By this construction thetop of the glove-body and the band which forms the wristbandwill contract about the wrist and will stretch laterally when tension is applied laterally, and, furthermore, the wristband will withstand the strain without stretching when tension is applied longitudinally in pulling the glove upon the hand, and therefore the wristband does not become torn, as is the case in the usual construction.
