GLOVE.
No. 348,807. Patented Sept. 7, 1886 WITJVESSEs f 06 I W; QMLW INVENTOR M/iP" N. FE'IEHS, Pnula-mm n lm. Washing'on, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDININ V. \VHITAKER, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NE\V YORK.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,807, dated September 7, 1886.
Application filed April 26, 1586.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN V. WHITAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a view of the back of my improved glove. Fig. 2 isa transverse sectional view on line .70 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 3 y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a view of one of the pieces inserted between thestrips of fabric in the back of the glove.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of gloves in which strips of fabric are inserted between strips of leather in the back of the glove, the strips offabric extending up in the backs of the fingers; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a glove, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the fingers of the glove, which have slots B extending in their backs from their bases to near their points, and strips 0, of textile 1naterial,extend from the upper ends of these slots to the wristband D, and are stitched with their sclvaged edges under the edges of the same, filling the slots. Strips E, of leather, are stitched with their edges over the edges of the textile strips, and the upper ends of these leather strips are formed with a nearly-rhomboid enlargement, F, having a notch, G, in the upper corner, the said enlargement being stitched with its edges to the bases of the fingers, doing away with the inserted pieces generally employed in gloves between the bases of the fingers, leaving the crotch between the fingers of the glove without any seams, which may chafe the skin of the person wearing Qthe gloves, especially Serial No. 200,178.

when riding ordriving with the reins between the fingers. The lower ends ofthe textile strips and the leather strips are covered by a transverse leather stri p, H, which is stitched with one of its edges over the upper edge of the textile wristband and the other over thelower ends of the strips; and it will be seen that the glove will have lateral expansibility, allowing the free bending of lingers without weakening the glove or rendering it less durable, all the parts of the glove which are exposed to wear being leather, while all parts where it is desirable to have the glove yielding and expansiblc, strips of textile material are inserted.
It follows that the glove may be made with any kinds of leather or textile material, although I prefer to use strips knitted with sel vaged edges for inserting in the back of the glove, and all other parts of the glove may be of any desired construction with the exception' of the strips in the back.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The glove provided withawristband and having strips of textile material inserted in the back of said glove, strips of leather alternating with said strips of textile material, said strips of leather extending from the wristband to the bases of each two adjacent fingers and secured thereto, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of a glove having longitudinal slots in the backs of the fingers, strips of textile material having the edges stitched under the edges of the slots and ex tending to the wristband of the glove, and strips of leather having their edges stitched over the edges of the textile strips, and having rhomboid enlargements at their upper ends, formed with triangular notches in the upper corners, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The combination of a glove having 10ngitudinal slots in the backs of the fingers, strips of textile material having the edges stitched under the edges of the slots and extending to the wristband of the glove, strips of leather having their edges stitched over the edges of the textile strips and having nearly IOC rhoniboid enlargements at their upper ends, my own I have hereunto affixed my signature formed with triangular notches in the upper in presence of two witnesses.
