Description

PATENTED JULY 14, 1908.
J. B. VAN PELT. SAFETY POCKET.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18, 1907.
JAMES B. VAN FELT, OF WELDON, NORTH CAROLINA.
SAFETY-POCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed. June is, 1907. Serial No. 379,604.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. VAN PELT, a citizen of the United States, residing atWeldon, in the county of Halifax, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Safety-Pockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which .it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety pockets and it has particular reference to a pocket formed to receive folding carpenters rules and to prevent their surreptitious removal by unauthorized persons.
The invention specifically comprises a strap arranged transversely above the mouth of the pocket and upon which the rule will catch in falling out or in being surreptitiously removed and it has for its object to provide novel means for securing the strap and the body of the pocket to the garment whereby the seams thereof are materially strengthened and the liability of the parts to rip and tear reduced to a minimum should the rule for any reason be caught by a projecting obstacle and pulled from the pocket.
The invention aims as a further object to providea safety pocket which shall efliciently attain the functions above-noted and yet one which involves a minimum expense to manu facture and is of marked simplicity.
The details of construction will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein,
Figure 1 is a detailed perspective view of the pocket showing the rule therein, Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views illustrating the rule in and out of position with relation to the pocket, Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1 illustrating a reinforcing seam forming a part of the invention, and, Fig. 5 is a plan view illustrating a slightly modified embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the numerals 6 and 7 designate the fabric sections of the trousers adjacent the hip pocket located at one side thereof, the numeral 8 designates the body of the pocket and the numeral 9 the flexible safety strap above-referred to. The body 8 is secured at one side and along its lower edge to the section 6 by a plain line of stitching 10. The edge of the section 6 underlies the edge of the section 7 and the edge of the body 8 is inserted between the over lapping edges of the sections 6 and 7 and fastened very securely and against all possibility of ripping or tearing by a double line of stitching 11, which is engaged through all three of said edges. The strap 9 is arranged above and transversely of the mouth of the pocket and is secured in like manner.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5, the novelty resides in form ing one of the ends of the strap 1 1 free and in providing the same with a socket member 14 for detachable engagement with a knob or ball member 15 secured to the section 6, whereby the strap may be unloosed to permit of the use of the pocket for other purposes, as for larger and heavier tools.
- What is claimed, is,
The combination with garment sections having overlapping stitched edged portions, of a piece of material having one longitudinal edge interposed between the overlapping stitched edges and secured thereby, and the remaining longitudinal edge of the piece of material and also the bottom edge thereof stitched to one garment section to form an open ended pocket, and a retaining strap a ove the open end of the pocket and having one end secured to one garment section and the opposite end in detachable engagement with the latter to hold an article in the pocket against displacement.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES B. VAN PELT.
