Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,199, dated May 28, 1878; application filed April 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YUNG- Gnow, of the city and county of San Francisco,-and State of California, have invented an Improved Pocket for Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of pockets for garments, by which I am enabled to strengthen them, and prevent them from being torn out at the corners or sides by the strains to which they are exposed; and it consists in the employment of a strip of leather, cloth, or other suitable material, which is rolled or twisted into a stout welt or cord, and is inclosed in a shirr or elongated opening, which extends partly or entirely around the pocket-opening, thus'resisting strain at the corners and other points.
This device is especially adapted to be used upon heavy duck goods, overalls, and such clothing as is used in mining, lumbering, harvesting, and all sorts of heavy work, and it will be more completely explained by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a viewof the pocket -opening with my attachment complete. Fig. 2 is a view of the cord or strengthening-strip.
A is the body of the article of clothing, and B is the pocket-opening. This opening may be made of any desired shape, this not being material to the success of my invention. I -can, therefore, make an angular or curved pocket, or one with rounded corners, at pleasure, to suit the position or requirements of the pocket. Around the corners or the whole pocket-opening I form an elongated shirr or tube of the material, by stitching down or folding over the material, as shown at G. 1
also make a stout cord, D, of leather or other material, which may be rolled or twisted into shape to fit into thistube surrounding the pocket. I prefer, however, to make this welt by folding or rolling up a strip of the material and stitching it, as this material will not shrink when the goods are washed, and it is very strong. This strip is laid into the tube and stitched in by surrounding it by the material when the tube is formed; or, if desired, it might be stitched through, although I do not think this especially necessary or desirable. By this construction I am enabled to greatly strengthen the pocket-openin g, so that it will be impossible to tear it out, and I do away with unsightly rivets, strengthening cross-pieces at the corners, & 7
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim, broadly, the use of a cording, as I am aware that this is used upon the edges of dresses, and in other places for ornamental effect but I am not aware that a pocket-opening has ever been strengthened or re-enforced by any such device as I have shown.
'What I claim as new, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improvement in the method of re-enforcing the mouths or openings of pockets for garments, consisting in partly or wholly surrounding such openings with a strip or welt of strengthening material, D, inclosed in a tube formed by the stitching O, and applied sub stantially as shown and described.
