Description

P. BANNER.
Overalls.
No. 2l8,472. Patented Aug. 12,1879.
FIG. 1
Wan 0e 9,5615
N- PETERS. PHDTO-UYHOGRAPHFE WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PINOUS BANNER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,472, dated August 12, 1879; application filed May 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PINoUs BANNER, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Overalls; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in wearing apparel, and is more especially adapted to overalls for outside wear and pants which are made of heavy material, for miners and those engaged in rough heavy work.
My invention consists in a peculiar re-enforce for the seat, which is formed with three extensions or projections, two of which extend down the inside leg-seams, while the third extends over the middle scam up to the front opening of the pants. The corners of the pocket-openings are prevented from being torn out by a peculiar system of cross-stitching, so that 1 am enabled to dispense with all supplemental re enforcing pieces at these points.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a rear view of my overalls. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the pocket. Fig. 4: is the rear re-enforce.
Let A represent the seat or rear portion of a pair of overalls, and B the rear pockets, one of which is placed on each hip. Each of these pockets is cut out in one piece, in such a shape that the upper inner corner, a, forms half of the back strap, as shown. When stitched in place the pockets are cross-stitched at the corners, as shown at b, so as to strengthen them at those points, and the stitching not only serves to secure the pockets firmly, but the outer end of the parts of the straps b, forming part of the pockets. The pockets and straps therefore form a continuous re-enforce when the two ends of the straps are buckled together. Any strain on the upper portion of the pants is met by the peculiar formation of the pockets and straps, where the cloth is doubled, and where the stitching is provided to resist strains.
The re-enforce O is formed with the seat portions 0'0 and three extensions or projections, two of which form leg-seam re-enforces c, and the other an extension or tongue, d, which is sewed onto both sides of the center-seam, passing down under the crotch or middle seam up to the lower part of the front opening of the pants, as shown.
-I am aware that re-enforces have previously been made for the seat of pants; but mine is made in such a peculiar shape that it not only forms double cloths for that portion most subject to friction and wear, but also strengthens the leg and crotch seams, which are more liable to rip or tear apart than any other in the pants. The seat re-ent'orce is not only sewed around the edges with double stitches, but a Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a pair of pantaloons or overalls, the reenforce 0, consisting of the seat portions G O, extensions 0 c, and tongue d, formed and attached to the pantaloons, substantially as described, and for the purpose of strengthening the leg and crotch seams of the garment, as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
PIN GUS BANNER.
