No. 222,708. Patented Dec. 16, I879.

PATENT, OFFICE.
CHARLES A. JONES, or SAN rnAncrsoo, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALL-S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,708, dated December 16, 1879; application filed July 23, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. JONES, of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, in the State of California, have made and invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Overalls, which invention is fully set forth and described in the following specification and the accompanyingdrawings therein referred to.
My invention has for its object to give to overalls increased qualities of strength and durability, whereby such articles shall better and longer withstand the rough usage incident to working or outdoor wear. It consists in the application to and combination with a pair of overalls of a supplemental portion 'or portions of material at the seat, hips, fore part, and upper part of the thighs. united to the material of the overalls by transverse and longitudinal lines of stitching, so that a double thickness of material is provided at the trunk portion of the overalls, both in front and behind, where the greatest wear and strain are borne.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of the upper portion of a pair of overalls made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of the same, taken from behind.
I apply to and combine with the upper or trunk portion of the overalls A a supplemental piece or pieces of material, which cover the entire seat, the hips, the front part, and the upper part of the thigh. This supplemental strengthening part is applied either in one piece to cover the seat, and additional pieces united thereto at the side seam to cover the front part, or it is made in separate pieces B B for the front, and B B for the seat, and these pieces are united together and to the overalls by the lines I) b of the principal scams, and the transverse edges a a I) b are united to the overalls by transverse lines of stitching running around the waist and around the thigh portions.
The wedge-shape pieces at the back, which are joined to the parts B B by the seams at a a, are employed to give shape and a better fit about the waist; but this construction is not of itself new, and I construct this back part of the overalls either by carrying up the pieces B to and uniting them at the waistband a, and so dispensing with the additional seams a a, or I employ the additional pieces B B in connection therewith, as I may desire, to give form to the back part. I
I am enabled also to form pockets, as shown at O,without the use of additional material, by leaving a proper opening along the transverse seam, or by cutting an aperture or slit in the outer material, B or B, to form the mouth of the pocket, and then stitchingthe upper portion of the overalls A and the part B or B together in lines or rows of stitches, which shall determine the shape and size of the pocket, the material of the overalls A thus forming the back part, and the material of the parts B or B the front part, of the pocket. This construction is shown at c, Fig. 1..
By this invention 1 provide an additional thickness of material at and over those parts of the overalls subjected to the greatest wear and strain, and by placing this additional thickness upon the outside 1 produce a neater and more comfortable fit of the body of the overalls to the person. I also allow pockets to be formed without the use of special material therefor, and I also give increased strength to the overalls in the vicinity of and around the pockets, and protect the material from being torn and the seams from being ruptured by the strain or weight of contents carried by the pockets.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a pair of overalls having a double thickness of material at the hips, seat, front part, and thighs thereof, formed by a supplemental trunk por tion, B or B, applied and secured to the outside of the overalls over said parts, and having the pockets thereof formed without the use of additional and special material therefor by providing a slit or aperture in the outer portion, B or B, for the mouth of the pocket, and then being stitched by a line or lines of stitching, c c, to unite the portions A and B or B together, and to determine the size and form of the pocket, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of July, 1879.
CHARLES A. JONES.
