Description

M. L. STERN June 12, 1923.
TROUSi BRS Filed 0st; 1.
Patentedelnne 12, 1923.
Mortars L. STERN, or nnrnorr, MICHIGAN. I
TROUSERS.
' Application filed October 1, 1921; Serial No. 504,631.
To'all whom it may concern."
Beit known-that I, MoRRIs- L. STERN, a citizen of Poland,=residi ng at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Mich- 5 igan, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings. This invention relatesto improvements in garments and more particularly to the construction of trousers, the object of the invention being to prevent wrinkling and add strength at the hip portion of the garment. j A further object is to perfect the appearance and give a better fitting garment over the hip of the wearer, and also to provide certain other new 'anduseful features in the constructlon.
With the above and otherflen'ds in view,
the invention consists in connecting the trousers 'pocketgor pockets with the side seams 'to give addedstrength and thickness over the hip and to cause the .material' to p 'tion extending over the hip is displaced and wrinkled.
conform closely to the hip curve and pre- 2e vent wrinkling." 1
The 'inventionconsists further in providing a construction 7 wherein the "front and back pockets are'connected together to reinforce thexgarmennprevent sagging ofthe pockets and strengthen the side seam.
The invention also consists in providing certain other new and useful features in the construction and" arrangement of parts, all as'hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended panying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation ,of the upper portion of a the'invention, s I i v v I Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail showing an inside elevation of a hip portion of the trousers claims, reference being had to the accom Fig. 3 -is a, perspective detaih'substan tially upon the line of Fig. 2, and
F ig; 4; is a similar-sectional detail substantially upon theline 4 -4 of Fig. ,3.
As usually constructed,.trousers have atendencyto wrinkle over the hip along the pair of trousers, illustrating make themfit snuglyover the hip of the wearer and this is particularly true when folded and stacked in piles such as ready towear garments. Further, the thickness of thematerial is not sufiicient' adjacent the side seam over the hip to prevent wrinkling and to cause the material "to lie flat over the hip of'the wearer, conforming snugly to the curve of the hip and also the weight of the material in the pockets and the arrangement of the pockets causes wrinkling and shifting of the hip portion out of proper position. 1 I A Further, the ordinary construction is such that there is seldom sufficient strength along the "side seam and particularly at the lower end of the pocket opening to withstand the strains put upon the material and'upon the "stitching in shoving the handsin the'pockets and in carrying the Weight of the persons hands The side seamf is often ripped by this weight or the material torn and the por- Int-he present construction, the front and back pockets are united and secured to the side seam, tying the pockets together to give added strength'and prevent displacement of the portion of the trousers extending over the'hip, at the same time adding a reinforce ment to the material to give the "desired strength and a 'sufiicient' thickness to prevent wrinkling while the garment is being worn or when in stock and to cause the garmentto closely conform to the hip of the wearer and lie smooth at all times.
In the accom an in drawim 1" india a: cates the front portion and 2 therear portion of the v trousers, which portions are' united'b y a side'seani 3, andet indicates the usual belt or waist band to which the front and i'earportions are secured at: their upper ends. 5 indicates the usual front access to which-is gained through'a side opening 6, which opening may be in line with the side seam 3, or as shown in the drawing, it may be given a'forward and upward slant or any other of the common pocket, i
forms of pocket openings. 7 indicates a rear or hip pocket having the usual pocket opening 8 formed in the material of the back portion 2 at a distance below the belt, by slitting the material and providing facings 9 and 10 of the same material at the back portion 2, as shown in Fig. 4.
The front pocket 5 comprises the usual thickness'of material folded upon itself and stitched together to form the bottom of the pocket and also stitched or secured across its upper end in the seam uniting the belt to the; front portion 1. The material of one side of the pocket is secured alongthe pocket opening 6 and this opening is reinforced by afacing 11, the. facing, the material of the r the material outer side of the pocket and the inturned edge of the material forming the front portion 1, being stitched together along the pocket opening. The opposite or inner side of the pocket 5 is extended to the side seam 3 and secured in said seam, the inner side of the pocket openingfi and this extended portion of theinner side of the pocket 5, being covered by a facing 12 of the'material like portions of the trousers. are formed,
The back or hip pocket the usual manner of two thicknesses of material stitched together along their side and lower endedges andthe upper portionvof the pocket above and for a short, distance below the opening 8 is reinforced and, stiffened by a suitable strip of lining, material 13 which,
is secured by stitching between the sidesof the pocket 7. The outer side of the pocket 7 is stitched into the side seam?) along with the inturned edges of the portion 2-and the facing 12 and; the inner side of, the pocket?- tog'etherwith the reinforcement 13' are extended laterally over the seam 3 and thevertical edges of this extended portion are firmly secured t the inturned portion of;
the seam 3 by, means of .a line of; stitching 14,
this stitching securing the rear pocket 7 to the forward inturned edge portion'of the seam3 so that this extended portionof the rear pocket overlies the side seam 3 and is firmly stitched to. thefront pocket 5 by the line of stitching la whichzpasses throughthe inturned edgeportion of the facing 12and attached inner side of the pocket 5. The rear pocket is therefore secured to the side seam 3 downward to the lower end of the front pocket opening 6 and the rear pocket is secured along the edge portion thereof which also extends downward to the lower end of the pocket opening 6, to the inturned edge of the seam 3 whichextends away from the back pocket so that this laterally extending portion of the back pocketwill overlie the upper end of the seam 3 to re-inforce this portion ofthe trousers andto also give sufg ficient thicknessof material at this pointtowithstand the strain and add stiffness from which the front andback 7 is made up in,
The particular shape or construction of h the trousers portions 1 and 2, their pockets 5 and 7, and the entrance openings 6 and 8 to said pockets, may obviously be varied as desired, this invention residing in the uniting of these pockets over the hip portion and to the side seam of" the trousers, this uniting of the pockets strengthening the side seam over the hip, preventing the material from, being tornunder heavy strains or the seam from ripping, and as the rear pocket includes theusual stiffening lining, and as this lining, together with the material forming the pocket, is extended across the side seam and united with the side of the seam opposite that atwhich the pocket is located,
without departing from the spirit of the in-.
vention and I do not therefore limit myself to the particular construction, arrangement or form shown.
Having thus fully described my what I claim, is I 1, A pair of trousers including a front porinvention,
tion and a rear portion united in a side seam,
a back pocket for the back portion including a stiffening lining and formed with a laterally extending portion united to the forwardly. extending inturned edge of the side seam, with said laterally extending portion.
of the pocketoverlying the side seam.
2; A pair of trousers including a front, portion and a back portion united in a side;
seam, a front pocket for the front portion and arear pocket for the rear portion, said pockets being located adjacent the side seam;
along that portion of the seam whichex} tends over the hip portion of the garment,
and said front pocket having a portion of one wall thereof secured within the hip portion of the side seam and theback pocket having a laterally extending portion of, one
side thereof overlying the hip portion/of the:
side seamand united to the'inturned edge of the front pocket which is securedin said seam.
3. A pair of trousers including a front portion and a back portion united' in a side seam, a front pocket for the front portion and arear pocket for the rear portion, said,
front pocket havinga portion of' one side thereof extended rearwardly to the side seam with the edge of said portion inturned against the forwardly extending inturned edge of the side seam and the rear pocket having a portion of a side thereof extended forwardly to overlie said side seam, and a L stiffening liningfor said rear pocket extended forwardly to overlie the said side seam, the extended portionsof the pocket side and lining and the inturned edge of the front Witnesses; v Lnwrs E.
