Nov. 1,
J. F. GOODENOW UN DERGARMENT Filed April 23, 1957 INVENTOR du/l Goodeflow ATTORNEY f Patented Nov. 1, 1 938 UNDERGARMENT Julian F. Goodenow, Kansas City, Mo., assignor to Goodenow Textiles Company, Kansas City, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application April 23, 1937, Serial No. 138,620
4 Claims.
This invention relates to garments, and more particularly to undergarments, such as shorts and the like, and has for its principal object to provide a suitable reinforcement for the crotch 5 and fly portions of the garment, which portions are ordinarily subject to the greatest wear and tear and, consequently, have a tendency to rip or tear out more quickly than other portions of the garment due to the strains on seams during wear- 1 ing the garment and stresses incidental to putting on and taking off the garment.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a garment, the several parts of which wear uniformly; and to provide a garment which is comfortable to the wearer.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a garment embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on the line 2--2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail front-elevational view showing the reinforcement as it is applied to the garment.
Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of one half of the reinforcement in disassembled relation to the garment.
Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the other half of the reinforcement in disassembled relation to the garment.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
35 The invention generally consists of a garment I having a reinforcing patch or the like 2, Fig. 2, fixed to the garment at the crotch and fly portions thereof.
The garment l preferably consists of a body 40 member 3 having a suitable waistband member 4,
which may be provided with elastic inserts 5 for fitting the garment about the waist of the wearer, fastening devices 6 also being provided on the fly portion 1 of the garment for securing the upper front edges 8 of the garment together. Leg members 9 and Ill extend downwardly from the waistband at the front and sides of the garment and a seat member H is provided, which is suitably joined to the waistband, as at [2, and to the leg members, as at l3 and M, Fig. 2.
In wearing a garment of this character, the greatest strains are in the crotch and fly seams thereof and the first signs of deterioration of the garment appear at those points. I, therefore,
provide the garment with the reinforcing patch 2 which preferably consists of a pair of members l5 and i6, Figs. 4 and 5, which are preferably sewed to the garment, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. i
The member l5 comprises a blank having a top .5 edge l'l extending laterally fromthe fly portion 1 at a point spaced above the lower extermity of the fly portion, side edges of the patch l5 extending outwardly and downwardly, as shown at l8, and downwardly and inwardly, as shown at I9, the edge .l9 terminating in a point 20, which is secured to the leg and seat portions in the crotch of the garment as particularly shown in Fig. 2. The inner edge 2| of the patch [5 is coextensive with the seam M of one leg of the garment and is notched and offset substantially midway thereof as at 22 for folding the upper, inner edge 23 of the patch inwardly on the dotted lines 24 around the bottom flap portion of the fly, after which it is stitched in such a manner that the end or corner 25 of the patch may be folded over upon itself to additionally cover and reinforce the fly and patch portions. I
The patch [6 shown in Fig. 5 is of substantially similar shape with the exception that the ma- 25 terial above the oifset and notch 26 on the upper inner edge of the patch I6 is of inwardly and upwardly curved conformation relative to the garment to which it is applied, as shown at 21, which adapts the upper inner edge of the patch l6 for 30 folding over and around the outer flap portion of the fly, so that it may be secured, as shown at 28, Fig. 1, in such a manner that the curved edge 21 thereof is coextensive with the inwardly curved lower edge 29 of the outer fly portion.
The patch I6 is of substantially the same size as thepatch l5 and is secured to the garment, for example, by the stitches 3|] in such a manner that the top edges l1 and 3i of the patch members are in alignment, in order to give the reinforced garment a uniform appearance.
The edges of the offsets 22 and 26 are joined by stitching, when the patches are applied to the garment, as shown at 32, in order to fasten the edges of the inner leg portions and lower ex- 'tremity of the fly portion together, thereby providing a plurality of thicknesses of material at the crotch portions of the garment to adequately strengthen same.
The particlular advantage in a garment embodying the features of the present invention is that the wear on the garment as a whole is uniform, due to reinforcing the parts of the garment which receive most of the strains incidental to wearing a garment of this character, thus preventing that portion of the garment from Wearing out more quickly than the other parts. The additional cost of such reinforcement is negligible; and the wearing and comfort qualities are greatly enhanced.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Ina garment of the character described, a body member consisting of leg; seat, fly and'waist members, the fly members having overlapping front and rear faces, and a reinforcement consisting of a pair of patches secured to the leg and seat members of the garment, said patches having coextensive top edges and having offset upper inner edges each folded around and secured to the adjacent fly members for securing the patches to the garment and members. i
2. In a garment of the character described, a body member consisting of leg, seat, fly and waist members, the fly members having overlapping inner and outer faces, and a reinforcement cons-isting of a pair of patches having lower inner adjacent portions secured to the leg and seat members of the garment, said patches having coextensive top edges and having offset upper inner reinforcing the fly secured to the leg members of the garment and having upper inner portions each folded around and secured to adjacent fly members for securing the patch to the garment and reinforcing the same.
4. In a garment of the character described, a body member consisting of leg, seat, fly and waist members, and a reinforcement consisting of a pairof patches having adjacent lower inner portions secured to the leg members of the garment and having upper inner portions each folded around and secured'to adjacent fly members for securing. the'patches to the garment and reinforcing the same.
