, This invention relates to apparel and more particularly to a nether garment, it being understood that while the invention has been illustrated in-,

corporated in underwear of the type known as shorts, it is not limited to this particular form.

It has been found thatunderwear, and particularly short underwear has a tendency to tear, alongthe front and it is, therefore, one object of the invention to provide the underwearwith reinforcing means for its front consisting of lining members which are so applied that they reinforce the front of the garment from the waist band to lower ends of the legs and very effectively prevent tearing" at both sides of the fly and crotch portion of the garment.

Another object of the invention is toprovide.

the garment with a reinforcing tape extending between the lower end of the fly and the crotch of the garment and serving very effectively to strengthen this portion and prevent tearing at this point.

Another object of the invention is to so apply the tape and the lining sheets that they will be very firmly secured in seams and hems of the garment and prevented from becoming detached along their ends and side edges.

It is another object of the invention to provide a reinforcing tape and lining sheets which may be incorporated in underwear of a conventional construction, thus making it unnecessary to provide a garment of a special construction in order to permit it to be reinforced by the improved reinforcing means.

Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient in operation and application to use.

With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

The underwear which has been shown rein- 20 forced in accordance with this invention has a body I including at waist band 2 and leg portions 3, the garment being provided with the usual front opening closed by a fly having the usual folds or hems 4 and 5 along its margins, buttons 25.

6 being sewed to one hem and the other being formed with the usual button holes 1. Below the crotch, the side portions of the front of the garment are folded and sewed to each other to form a seam 8 terminating at the seam 9 extending transversely of the crotch of the garment and constituting the usual seams for inner side portions of the leg extensions 3 as Well as connecting the front portion of the garment with the seat portion l0 thereof.

In order to reinforce the front of the garment at opposite sides of the fly and along inner sides of the leg extensions, there have been provided lining sheets I I which are cut from cotton or other suitable fabric and are of such length that they extend from the waist band to the lower ends of the leg extensions. These lining sheets are tapered toward their upper and lower ends as shown clearly in Figure 8 and when they are applied to the garment, their straight out inner side edges I 2 are sewed into the folds or hems 4 and 5 of the fly while the portions extending below the fly are sewed into the seam 8. The diagonally extending edges l3 are sewed into the inner leg seams 9 and the upper and lower edges of the lining sheets are sewed into the waist band seam I4 and the hems l5 at lower ends of (the legs 3. These lining sheets are sewed along their outer side edges as shown at l6 and are held in close smooth fitting engagement with the legs and front portion of the garment at opposite sides of the fly. The lining sheets greatly strengthen the edges of the tape. This tape greatly strengthens the portion of the garment between the crotch and the lower end of the fly and also serves as a reinforcement for the lower portion of the fly it: self and prevents the garment from being torn along the seam 8 when subjected to pulling strains. A garment reinforced in accordance with this invention will be very strong but since it is reinforced by lining sheets and a tape applied as illustrated and described, no appreciable bulk will be added to the garment and it will be comfortable when worn;

From the foregoing description of theconstruction of my improved device, the operation thereof and the method of applying the same to use, will be readily understood. It will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that variouschanges in form, proportion and in the minor "details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. 'A' garment having a waist band and a body including leg, extensions, the garment being open;

alongits front and'formed with a fly, lining sheets for the front portion of the body and inner portions of the legs disposed fia't against the inner surfaces thereof and extending laterally from the fly and inner seams of the legs an appreciable extent from lower ends of the legs to the waist band, said sheets being sewed into folds of the fly and into inner seams of the legs and having their upper ends sewed into the seam connecting the body and the waist band and their lower ends sewed into hems at lower ends of the legs, and a reinforcing tape extending between the fly and the rear end of the crotch of the garment with its lower end sewed into the inner leg seams at the junction of the crotch with the seat of the garment and its upper portion overlapping the lower portion of the fly and sewed thereto.

' 2 A garment having a waist band and a body including leg extensions, the garment being open along its front and formed with a fly and a front seam extending from the lower end of the fly to the innerseams of the legs at the junction of the rear end of the crotch with the seat of the garment, and lining sheets at opposite sides of the fly having tapered upper and lower portions and having their lower ends sewed i-nto hems of the legs and their upperends sewed into the seam connecting the waist band to the top of the body,

the said upper portions having their inner side edges sewed into the fly and the front seam below the fly, the said lower portions having their inner sideedgessewed into the inner leg seams, said sheets extending from the fly and the inner leg seamsacross front portions of the body and the legs the full distance between the waist band and lower ends of the legs and having their outer side edges sewed to-the body and the legs.

3. A garment comprising a body having legextensions, saidgarment being open at its front and provided with afly, lining sheets secured against theinner surface of the body at opposite sides.
