Description

May 28, 1940. J. B', sTovALl.
' SHORTS Filed Jan. 19. 19394 Patented May 28, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates generally to under-pants, and more particularly to improvements in shorts.
The invention is designed with the particular purpose in view of providing a pair of underpants embodying practical means for facilitating dressing the male generative organs on the left side and constraining the same with comfort.
To the accomplishment of the above subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment. of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the succeeding description and defined in the claim appended hereto.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a pair of shorts equipped according to my invention,
Figure 2 is a View in transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking downwardly as indicated by the arrows,
Figure 3 is a View in front elevation of the flap, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary View in front elevation drawn to an enlarged scale of the patch and the strap carried thereby.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the shorts I to which my invention is shown as applied, are of the usual pattern and construction, including the waist-band 2, right and left legs 3 and 4, and the fly 5 including the usual fly edge reinforcing strip 6.
According to my invention a substantially triangular cloth flap 'I is stitched at its base edge, as at 8, to the inner, or crotch side of the left leg 4, said flap being, as will be understood, inside the leg and designed to extend toward the right or thigh side of said leg with its side edges free. Preferably said flap I is stitched together with the inside leg seam 'I' usual in such garments and is cut out at one corner, as at 9, to fit around the lower end of the fly reinforcing strip 6. Also, preferably, said flap I is of double thickness. The free corner, or apex I0, of said flap has secured thereto a strap II preferably of cloth. A square patch I2 is sewed, as at I3, to the front of the left leg 4 adjacent to the thigh side thereof and slightly above the free corner I0 of said flap, said patch and said leg having formed therein a butand i tonhole-like aperture I4. A strap I5 is stitched, as at I6, to the outside edge of said patch I2.
In the use of the described invention, the organs are confined between the flap 'I and the left leg of the wearer, the strap II inserted 5 through the aperture I4 from the inside of the garment and tied to the strap I5. As will be obvious, by manipulating the strap II against the patch I2, that is pulling the same through the aperture I4, the thigh side of the left leg 4 and 10 the flap 7, together with the inner side of said leg, may be pulled toward each other to tighten the flap around the organs as desired and thereby coni-lne the same between said flap and the left leg of the wearer.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing 20 from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
. The combination with a pair of shorts including right and left legs, of a substantially triangular ap of flexible material in one leg having its base edge stitched to said leg to extend along the leg on the crotch side thereof, the remaining edges of said flap being free, and means for attaching the apex of said flap to said one leg comprising a strap extending from said apex,
a patch secured to the front of said one leg vadjacent the thigh. side thereof, said one leg and patch having a buttonhole-like aperture formed therethrough for the extension of said strap through the same from the inside of said one leg, and a second strap secured to said patch for tying to the strap first mentioned, said patch and button hole being located above the apex of said flap whereby said straps when tied pull upwardly on said flap to cause the lower edge thereof to hug the left leg of the wearer closer than the upper edge, thereby permitting said upper edge to bulge outwardly of said leg.
