Patented Feb. 14, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT Louis H. Mendelson, Springfield, Ohio Application November 5,1946, Serial No. 707,835
1 Claim. 1
My invention relates to undergarments, drawers and the like for men, and has application to any garment worn about the waist and enclosing the groin and upper thighs. Such a garment may be typified by what is known as shorts, which are worn next to the body. Other like garments would be pajama drawers, knitted drawers, union suits, and any trouser or drawer-like construction worn next to the body whether under any other garment or not.
The object of the invention is to provide comfort to the wearer with relation to the protection of the genitals from contact with the leg. Almost any drawer or shorts, except those in which there is deliberately formed a suspensory structure, is such that the genitals lie between the leg itself and the leg of the drawer at the crotch and below and are pressed against the leg by the outer trousers and by the drawers themselves causing chafing against the leg, and of an adherence to the le due to perspiration, causing itching and inconvenience. Many men have a chafed place on the leg due to this cause which persists for years.
Almost always men dress as it is called, to the left side and accordingly my invention is applied to the left side, but it may be applied to either or both sides. It has as its object the prevention of chafing and adherence as above noted, without loss of full ventilation. It has as ancillary objects the provision of necessary strength for the applied piece of material, simplicity in mounting and security against being torn. Generally the drawer itself is unmodified in style, size, or fit, since the attachment which provides for the relief noted, is arranged to conform naturally to the shape and fit of the drawer and without modifying it in any way.
I have illustrated the invention by a particular example, applied to a particular type of drawer worn next to the skin, but it will be understood that this is but to illustrate the inventive novelty which will be set forth in the claim that follows and to which reference is hereby made.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of shorts to which my invention has been applied.
Figure 2 isa section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective of the insert, and
Figure 4 is a pattern of the insert.
The particular mode of making up the drawer or the particular length thereof so far as leg is concerned, is not an essential of my invention.
The garment shown has a waist band which in this instance is closed with buttons 2 at the front.
The leg portion 3, 3, are secured to this waist band, and are connected together at the rear of the drawer, and left separated at the front down to the crotch where there is a seam 4, which when the drawer is worn passes between the legs of the wearer. In some form of drawer the seat may be partly open, in some the seat is formed by a seam extending from the crotch seam up the back of the drawer, with the required shaping accomplished by making the leg portion in two sections secured together transversely to the crotch. In others, the seat is a separate piece stitched to the leg portions so as to form the g'arment at the rear. The latter structure happens to be the one employed in the illustrated drawers or shorts.
The protective insert may be of the same material as the drawers or different material, and may be held in place by snap fasteners or buttons. It is preferably stitched into place. It consists of a piece, in this case made up of two fiat pieces stitched together at 5a, at the middle, thus permitting a forming of the insert to the general shape of the inner leg and seat portion. The combined pieces have a straight bottom edge 5, which when mounted in place hangs in general conformity to the leg portion on the inside of the left leg of the drawer. It has curved portions 6, l, which when the piece is mounted hang in general conformity with the crotch seam of the drawers, and if there is a central back seam, it would conform to this seam. It has two margins 8 and 9. The margin 8 is stitched to the front of the drawer at 8a, so as to bring the edge 5 in a position to hang together with the drawer leg, and the margin 9 is stitched to the back of the drawer at 9a so as to bring the edge portion 1 about to a position of extension from the crotch seam of the drawer. The tips 10 and II of the piece are secured to the waist band of the strucure.
By reference to Figure 2 which is taken looking down through the drawer, just below the crotch seam, it will be noted that the piece, here marked A, hangs in conformity with the leg. When the drawer is applied to the wearer the genitals are placed in the space between the piece and the leg with the result of bellying out the piece at its freely hanging portion between the stitched mountings. This brings the fabric of the piece between the parts and the leg as illustrated at B. Since the margin 5 of the piece hangs free, the ventilation of the parts is as good or better than if the piece were not in place and there is no chafing against the leg, no adherence to the leg,
3 and as a result, no itching and discomfort, as well as no restraint at all.
The curved edges 6, l of the piece pass between the legs naturally, since they conform to the inside of the drawer or substantially so. Since there is no edge exposed to be caught by the foot for example in putting on the drawer, there is little danger of tearing the insert. Also since the insert is stitched to the waist band and acts in a sense as a loop against lengthwise strains, there is a minimum of tendency to rip the piece away where it is stitched, as would be the case if the insert were merely stitched down only part way and made of less length.
What the structure amounts to a loose lining or insert within the inner side of the left leg of the drawer, held only at the outer edge and held only in a generally lengthwise direction of the legs, thus avoiding the forming of any closed pocket and thus in any way restraining the wearer. The shaping of the insert while highly desirable, is not absolutely essential.
While the various details as above described are important in making the structure of the invention in its best form, nevertheless other ways which will provide for a loose lining attached only along the leg portions and not at the bottom edge or crotch edge at a location to take care of the functions already described, will fall Within the scope of my invention in its more general aspects.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a drawer type garment worn next the body and having a waist band portion, seat and leg portions, a loose lining insert for the left leg of the garment and comprising a piece of fabric adapted to conform to the shape of the drawer and having substantially straight side edge portions and a substantially straight edged bottom portion, said straight side edge portions being secured to the vertical leg portions of the REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
