GARMENT lFiled July 18, 1936 .l i1 verl a? by v/ 5. Mom/6g Patented Mar. 30, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE GARMENT Ruth Stuart Wheeler, Boston, Mass.
Application July 18, 1936, vSerial No. 91,396-
2 Claims.
This invention relates to garments and espe cially to children's garments. f
Children oftentimes outgrow their clothes before they are worn out, thereby causing extra expense, and this is especially true of seasonal clothes. 'I'hose who desire to have their children Wear good quality clothes experience this waste especially, because the clothes are Still useful when they are too small for the child.
It is my principal object to provide garments which will fit the child when they are bought, and which embody means by which they can be immediately enlarged whenever desired, and have this apply to a combination of garments worn together Such as pants and a waist. Another object is to so provide pleats in said garments that they are invisible while being worn, and the portion of one garment with a pleat is covered by the other. Y
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts Such as is disclosed by the drawing and Specification. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosure; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View of garments embodying my invention, consisting of pants and a waist fastened together, the dot and dash lines indicating the size of the garments when the pleats have been let out.
Figure 2 is a sectional view, broken away, showing the pants and waist held together with a pleat formed in each.
Figure 3 is a sectional View similar to Figure 2; but after said pleats have been let out and the garments thereby enlarged.
As illustrated, a pair of pants 5 having buttonholes 'B therein are fastened to a waist 'I having buttons 8 thereon which are inserted through said buttonholes to hold said pants and waist together. The top or waist-line portion Ill of said pants is of double thickness, and said buttonholes 6 are cut therein. Below said waist-line portion I is a cloth II forming the remainder of said pants 5, a portion of which cloth II is folded upwardly at the lower edge of said Waistline portion to form a pleat I2 at the inside of said pants, which pleat is maintained by removable stitching I3 at the bottom thereof. To prevent any possible sagging of said pleat I2 it may be desirable to Stitch it as at I4 at the top thereof. When the person wearing said pants has outgrown them said stitching I3 may readily be -60 removed and also said stitching I4, which will lengthen said pants 5 twice the width of said pleat I2.
The bottom or Waist-line portion I5 of Said waist 'I is of double thickness, and said buttons 8 are sewed thereon, as shown. Above said waist-line portion I5 of Said waist 'I is the cloth I6 forming the-remainder of said waist, a portion of which cloth is folded downwardly at the upper edge of said waist-line portion .|5, to form a pleat I8, at the inside of said waist 1,'which pleat is maintained by removable stitching I9 at the top thereof. When the personY wearing said waist l has outgrown it said stitching I9 may readily be removed, which will lengthen said waist l twice the width of said pleat I8. The tape 20 sewed by stitching 2| and 22 to said waist 1 is merely forl protective and' reinforcing purposes.
While pleates to enlarge garments have been used before, the use of pleats in combined garments in the manner I have disclosed is new, and increases the market for better quality and longer wearing garments of this type forgrowing children. I
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a pair of pants embodying a crotch and a waist, said pants embodying a waist-line portion at the top thereof, a pleat formed from the material in said pants below Said Waist-line portion and extending upwardly and being opposite to and covered by said Waistline portion, removable stitches to maintain said pleat extending into the lower portion of said waist-line portion, said waist embodying a waistline portion at the bottom thereof, a pleat formed from the material of said waist above said waist-line portion and 'extending downwardly and being directly in back of and covered by said Waist-line portion of said waist, removable stitches to maintain Said pleat extending into the upper portion of said Waist-line portion of said Waist, said Waist-line portions embodying cooperative instrumentalities to hold said pants and waist together with said Waist-line portions opposite each other.
2. In combination, a pair of pants embodying a crotch and a waist embodying cooperative instrumentalities to hold them together, said pants embodying a pleat formed in the top half portion of and inside said pants, and remov able stitches to maintain said pleat, said waist embodying a` pleat formed in the bottom half portion of and inside said waist and removable stitches to maintain said Second-mentioned pleat, the top portion of said pants being directly in front of and covering said pleat in said vwaist when said Waist and pants are held togetherr by said instrumentalities.
