Be it known that I, THOMAS G. BowERs,

a citizen of the United States, residing in New Haven, county of New Haven, State of .Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to corsets and mor .particularly to a corset which is provided with an abdominal or other support to which straps are, adapted to be attached to, retain this support in position. These straps are, in the form of my invention which I have chosen to illustrate and describe, arranged to pass through slots .Which are formed in the corset body, so that they may be buckled upon the outside of the corset and thereby may be conveniently accessible to buckle and The improvements which I have made particularly deal with this support and with that part of the corset which is arranged to permit the straps to passtherethrough.

One'object of my invention is to provide an improved methodof manufacture of a corset of-the character described."

A further object of the invention is the provision of a corset of this type which will be-stronglymade and will be durable and one in-which the slots which are formed to receive the straps will not be inclined to tear.

A further object of my invention is to lprovide' a corset of the class described with slots through which the straps which are attached to the abdominal support may pass without appreciably weakening-thebody of the corset. I a i I A still further objectof the invention is to provide improved reenforcing means for a corset and to generally improve the structure of the corset so that the same will have wear resisting qualities, will be comfortable .when adjusted and will be of improved quality generally.

To these and otherends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

The corset is provided with, an abdominal support 13, which is formed in two

23 and 24 are turned and stitched, as shown at 25, and a facing strip 26 is applied thereto in the same manner, as previously described in connection with the frontedge of the back portion of the corset, which is turned at 21.

The front edges of the back portion of the corset, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, are made to overlap the rear of the gores 16 and 17, so that the stitched turned-over portion of the back part of the corset may be sewed upon the stitched turned-over edge of the gores. These overlapping edges are stitched continuously from the upper and lower edges of the corset to that portion where it is desired to provide the slots 27 through which the straps 14 are adapted to pass. The edges here are sewed only at intervals, such as at the points 28, to provide the slots 27 between these sewed portions to permit the passage of the straps. The V-shaped reenforcing strip 24, it will be noted, is applied to that part of the corset in which the slots 27 are provided and where the meeting edges of the backpart and front gores of the corset are not continuously stitched. This, it is noted, will serve to strengthen this part of the corset, which otherwise might have a tendency to be weakened by the provision of the slots 27, where the front gores are not stitched or sewed to the back part of the corset. A tape 29 is secured upon each of the front gores 16 and 17 of the corset, which tape is sewed at points 30 along its length to provide the slots 31 which act as keepers for the loose ends of the straps 14.

A reenforcingpiece 32 is formed upon each side of the back portion of the corset and the tapes 33 by which the buckles 15 are secured to the corset are fastened beneath these strips 32. It will be seen that this will provide a strengthening rib to take the pull upon the buckles 15 exerted by the straps 14 attached to the abdominal pad. This strip 32 is secured to one of the stayv seams 34, so that the pull upon the straps will. come upon one of the strong stay seams. It will be understood that one of the strips 32 is provided upon each side of the corset in connection with each set of buckles 15.

my hand this It will be obvious that while my improvements are shown in connection with a cor set having an abdominal support or front pad, the invention may well be applicable to corsets of other types, for instance, to one having a pad at the rear portion thereof. In such case, the slots 27 might be arranged to open orface forwardly instead of rear- Wardly, as shown. I do not intend, there fore, to limit myself to the construction shown wherein the front pad or abdominal support is used.

lVhat I claim is:

1. A corset comprising a plurality of sec tions, the meeting edges of two thereof being arranged to overlap, and sewed together at spaced points only for a portion of their length, to provide a plurality of slots, a strip stitched to one of said sections to reinforce the same, and sewed therewith at said spaced points to the other section, and eX- tending to the opposite edge of the first section, corset fastening devices secured to said opposite edge of the first section, a plurality of buckles secured to the second section adjacent said slots, an abdominal sup-port adapted to be worn beneath the corset and having straps connected to its ends, said straps being passed through said slots and secured to said buckles, andv means for reinforcing the garment at the points at which said buckles are connected thereto.

2. A corset including a front section and a rear section, said sections being joined at the side of the garment by having their edges overlapped and sewed continuously together for a portion of their length and-at spaced points, only, for another portion oftheir length, to provide a plurality of slots, a strip stitched to the front section to reinforce the same, said strip embracing the said slotted portion of the two sections, being sewed to both sections at said spaced. points, and extending to the opposite edge of the front section, corset fastening devices secured to said opposite edge of the front section, a plurality'of tapes secured to the rear section of the corset adjacent said slots, a reinforcing I strip secured to the garment over said tapes, buckles upon the ends of the, tapes, an ab dominal support adapted to be worn within the corset, and straps secured to said sup- 7 port and connected to said buckles.
