UlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALDEMAE KOPS, OF NEW YORK, Y.,ASSIGNOR 'IO KOPS BROS. INQ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., -A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
APPAREL GARMENT.
Application filed December 24, 1325. Serial No. 77,467.
My present invention relates to an ap parel garment and partloularly to a gar ment of the brassieretype. ,As is generally understood, due largely to the prevalent use of extremely low busted corset garments, there is a tendency for the flesh to overlie the upper edge of the corset not only at the inafter more particularly described.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a garment made in accordance with my present invention, and
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the garment viewed from the inner side thereof.
By reference to the drawing it will be seen that the garment made in accordance with this invention includes a front member 10, back members 11 and 12, and side members 13 and 1 1-, and 15 and 16. Between the front membcrlO and the side members 13 and 15 there are reinforcing strips 17 and 1S. Similiarly between the side members 13 and 14 there is a reinforcing strip 19, and between the side member 14; and the back member 11 there is a reinforcing strip 20. In like manner on the other or right side of the garment, between theside members 15 and 16 there is a reinforcing strip 21, and between. the side member 16 and the back member 12 there is a reinforcing strip 22." There is also a reinforcing strip 23 at the edge of the back member 11 and a reinforcing strip 24 the edge of the back member 12. The garment is connected in position on the body, in the form of the invention as illustratcd, by a series of spaced eyelets 25 suitably connected to the reinforcing strip 23 and similar series of spaced hooks 26 connected to reinforcing strip 2 1.
Underlying the front member 10 I employ a strap 27 which is preferably so constructed that the upper edges incline upwardly and are connected by a line of stitching or otherwise to the front member. ri I llhe upper portion of this strap 2! 1s also t at these portions of the body, and the co; truction of the garment will be here 1 tion as a flesh cont-roller at the front of the garment and over the diaphragm of the wearer. The lower edge of the strap 27 is also tapered with the edge portions thereof extending downwardly. This lower edge 30, however, is not secured to the overlying portion of the front member 10. Secured to the lower front portion of the strap 27 there is a tape. 31. fitted with a clasp 32 and a hook 33,the hook 33 being adapted to engage either one of a series of eyelets 34 provided for this purposein the lower front central portion of the front member 10, and the clasp 32 to engage a fastener of a corset or other undergarment to exert a downward tension in the strap 27 and also to assist in maintaining the garment in position on the body of the wearer.
In the left hand side of the garment there is a flesh retaining strap 35. This extends from the reinforcing strip 17 to the reinforcing strap 20 and the partsthereof prefably incline upwardly or toward the top of the garment from the reinforcing strip 17 to the reinforcing strip 19, and in the opposite directionor downwardly from the reinforcing strip 19 to the reinforcing strip 20. The flesh retaining strap 35 is secured to the reinforcing strip 19 from the upper central portion thereof as indicated at 36 to a positirm approximately midway of the width of the strap as indicated at 37, the forward end of the strap being conncctei'l to the reinforcing strip 17 and therefore to both the front member 10 and the side me1nber. 13, while the rear end of the strap connected to the reinforcing strip 20 and therefore to the side member 14- and the back member 11. i
"In the right hand side of the garment there is a complementary flesh retaining strap 38. This strap extends from the re lll'fOlClllg strip 18 to the reinforcing strip 22 and the part thereof between the reinforcing strip 18 and the reinforcing strip 21 preferably inclines upwardly, while the other part thereof preferably inclines in the. opposite direction or dmvnwardly be tween the reinforcing strip 21 and the reinforcing strip 22. This strap 38 is connected to the reinforcing strip 21 from the upper central portion thereof as indicated at 39 to the point as indicated at 40 which is approximately midway of the width ofthe strap. :At its forwardend this strap is "connected' to the reinforcing strip 18' and at its rear end to the reinforcing strip tie the strap 38 may be provided with series of stitch lines 43 in theupper portion there of and stitch lines M in the lower portion thereof, these stitch lines running substan tinlly parallel withthe upper and lower edges of the straps. i v
'Also' as illustrated, the lower side portions ofthe garment maybe fitted with inserts 45' and46 of elastic material so; as to cause the garment to conform to the body and the underlying garment. Furthermore, the garment'may also be provided with suitable shoulder straps 47 and 48.
' The reinforcing " strips 19 and 21 he at approximately the axillar lines of the garmentand from 'theconstruction of the garment as hereinbefore described it will now be understood that 'the flesh retaining straps 35 and 38-VVlth the intervening strap 27 com prise a substantially continuous flesh retaining belt which extends entirely across thefront portion of the body and appreciable distances to the rear of'the axilla'r' lines thereof so as 'to retain and maintain in position the flesh which would otherwise extend beyond" or overlie the 'upper edge of the corset-garment. 1
'I claim as my invention: I
1. In an apparel garment of the type doscni'bed, a front member, side members, back members, means for securing "the garment Jon' the body :of the wearer, a diaphragm strap underlying the front member being substantially coextensive therewith I circumferentially of the garment and connected along its upper edge to the overlying portion of the front member of the "garment,
and side flesh retaining straps each extendf-rom the saiddiaphragm strap across a correspond ng slde member and upwardly from the diaphragm strap to substantially the axillar line of the corresmiding side member and then downwardly to the rear of the side member and each of the said side flesh retaining straps being connected to the corres onding side member from the upper edge t roof at the axillar line to a point along the axillar line substantially distant from the upper edge of the corresponding side flesh retaining strap and having its upper and lower edges free from the body of the garment, the said diaphragm strap and side flesh retaining straps being adapted to overlie the upper edge of an undergnrment to retain the flesh which would otherwise overhang the same. 2. In an apparel garment of the type described, a front member, side members, back members, means for securing the garment on the body ofthe wearer, a diaphragm strap underlying the front member being substantially coextensive therewith circumferentiab 1y. of the garment and connected uloiv its upper edge to the underlying portion o? the front member of the garment, side flesh retaining straps each extending from the said diaphragm strap across a corresponding side member and upwardl from the diaphragm strap to substantially the axillnr line of the corresponding side member and then downwardly to the rear of the side member, eachof the said side flesh retaining straps being connected to the correiponding side member from the upper edge 'IGIQOf at the axillar line to a point along the axillar line substantially distant from the upper edge of the corres )ondin side flesh retaining strap, the sui dizrp rngm strap and side flesh retaining straps being adapted to overlie the upper edge of an undergarment to retain the flesh which would otherwise overhang the same, and u gore member set in the lower axillur portion of each side member, each elastic gore extending approximately from the lower edge of the corresponding side :tlosh retni ning member to the lower edge of the said member in which it is fixed.
Signed by me this 9th day of December, 1925.
