Description

Nov. 17, 1942. BERK 2,302,517
BRASS IERE FiledDec. 6, 1940 INVENTOR Maurocc 309% W Y ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 17, 1942 UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE BRASSIERE Maurice Berk, Hackensack, N. J. Application December 6, 1940, Serial No. 368,778
6 Claims.
This invention relates to new and. useful improvements in brassieres and the like.
More specifically the invention contemplates a brassiere having a brassiere body of substantially nonstretchable cloth material formed with brassiere pockets at the front which have substantially triangularly shaped openings extended inwards from the bottom edges thereof with their apexes at the nipple portions of the pockets, and novel arrangement of one way stretch gussets set into said openings in a particular way to increase the uplifting and supporting effect of the brassiere.
More specifically, the invention contemplates arranging the gussets so that the material thereof is stretchable crosswise of the brassiere body.
Still further the invention proposes the provision of non-stretchable tapes attached on said gussets and extending from the apexes to the opposed sides for reinforcing these areas to increase the supporting effect of the brassiere body.
Still further the invention proposes a modification in which the non-stretchable tapes are cooperative with non-stretchable straps extending across the triangular shaped openings in a manner so that the tapes maybe fixedly held in any one of various positions to change their points of support of the breasts.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a brassiere constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary front elevational view similar to a portionof Fig. 1 but illustrating a modified construction. v s
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The brassiere or the like garment, in accordance with this invention, includes a brassiere body IU of substantially non-stretchable cloth material having breast pockets H at the front which have substantially triangular shaped openings l2 extended inwards from the bottom edges thereof, with their apexes at the nipple portions of the pockets. Substantially triangular shaped gussets I I of one way stretch material are set into the triangular shaped openings l2 to stretch crosswise of th'e brassiere body for engaging against the bottom portions of the breasts to resiliently uplift and support them. Tapes l5 of non-stretchable material are attached on the gussets l4 and extend from the apexes to the opposed sides for reinforcing these areas to increase the supporting effect of the brassiere body.
The brassiere body In is constructed of the usualmaterial with the usual trimmings. It is provided with the customary shoulder straps IS. The gussets 14 are of heavy elastic web material. They are attached to the bottom portions of the pockets H by lines of stitches l6 extending along their sides. Thetapes l5 are attached to the gussets M by stitches I'l extending along their lengths.
When the brassire is worn the one way stretch material of the gussets i4 extends crosswise beneath the breasts uplifting and supporting them and adding to the supporting action ofthe brassiere body. The tapes I! extend centrally forwards and rearwards along and underneath the breasts acting as a firm support.
In Figs. 4 and 5 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in that it embodies an adjustable arrangement of the tapes l5. In accordance with this form of the invention, the tapes l5 may be extended laterally in one direction or the other from the apexes of the gussets [4. More specifically non-stretchable straps l8 extend crosswise of the triangular shaped-openings l2 at the bottom edge of the .brassire body. Each strap I8 is fixedly mounted at one, end with stitches 19. The other ends of these straps are provided with fastening elements 20 selectively cooperative with a plurality of complementary fastening elements 2| located on the opposed sides of the openings l2 by which the straps is may be slackened or drawn tight as desired. A plurality of fastening elements 22 are arranged intermediate the lengths of the straps l8 and are selectively cooperative with complementary fastening elements 23 upon the ends of the tapes l5.
As illustrated in Fig. 4 the tape 15' is shown extended centrally of the cut out opening l2. If desired the tape [5' may be arranged to one side or the other of the central position, by disconnecting the fastening element 23 from the attached fastening element 22 and reconnecting the fastening element 23 with a different one of the fastening elements 22. For example, the dot and dash lines I5 illustrate the tape IS in a position towards the left. The straps l8 are slackened or drawn in, as needed to permit the connection between selected fastened elements 22 and the fastening elements 23.
In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form and like parts are identified by like reference numerals.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
