2 Claims.
This invention relates to a brassiere, and more particularly to a bust supporter.
Among the objects of the invention are to provide a brassiere which may be worn comfortably to maintain the busts in natural form; which will support the breasts from below to give them an uplift and prevent them from drooping; which is adjustable in girth; and, which may be readily applied and conveniently fastened from the front.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description thereof. It is to be understood, however, that modifications in the details of construction and arrangement of parts herein described may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in-the claims.
According to the present invention the brassiere comprises a body having a rear portion that passes around the back and under the arms of the wearer and carries at the front two bust covering portions which terminate in straps that are adapted to be crossed over and to be fastened along the lower edge of the body, the fastening straps being so arranged as to extend directly under the breasts to support them from below.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a view showing the brassiere laid flat, inside out;
Fig. 2 is a view, looking from the front, showing the brassiere as worn;
Fig. -3 is a side view thereof; and
Fig. 4 is a front view of a modified form of the brassiere.
Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to Figure 1, the brassiere comprises a body of any suitable fabric having a rear portion 10 which passes around the back and under the arms of the wearer. The body includes two bust covering portions 11 and 12, which portions may be fashioned in any known manner to conform to the general contour and shape of the breasts. The body terminates at the front in two relatively narrow or tapering downwardly extending ends or fastening straps l3 and 14. 15 is an opening or slit which is disposed longitudinally of strap 14 and through which the other of said straps is passed in fastening the brassiere as hereinafter described. The body may be provided with the usual shoulder straps 16 and 1'7, which straps may be secured at their ends to the rear portion 10 and to the bust covering portions 11 and 12, respectively.
In fastening the brassiere, the strap 13 is passed from the inside, through the slit 15 and its free end is fastened to the body of the brassiere at a point on one side along the lower edge.
The free end of the other strap is then fastened at a point on the opposite side. The strap 13 carries a hook or other fastening element 18 adapted to engage with one of the eyes or other complementary fastening elements 19 on one side of the brassire while the strap 14 carries a similar fastening element 20 for engagement with one of the fastening elements 21 on the opposite side. Preferably, a plurality of spaced fastening elements 19 and 21, respectively, are provided'at each side so that the garment may be secured at different po'nts along the sides to permit of adjustments in girth.
On referring to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be observed that the straps 13 and 14, in their fastened positions, lie directly under the breasts and function to support the breasts from below, thus giving them an uplift and holding them in a natural comfortable position. It is to be noted that the construction whereby one of the fastening straps passes through a slit in the other permits of relative sliding motions of the two straps and allows free movement of the body without in any way interfering with the proper support of the busts.
Fig. 4 shows a modified form of the brassiere wherein the slit 15 is omitted. With this form, in fastening the garment, the straps are twisted about each other and carried in reverse directions so that the free end of strap 13 will be fastened along the lower edge of the body of the brassiere on the side of the bust covering portion 11, while the free end of the other strap 14 is similarly fastened along the lower edge on the side of the bust portion 12. In this instance the fastening straps also lie directly under the breasts and support them from below.
What I claim is:
1. A brassiere comprising a body having a rear portion, two bust covering portions, and a fastening strap extending outwardly from each bust covering portion, said fastening straps being adapted to be crossed over and to be secured at their free ends along the lower edge of the body, at opposite sides thereof, to support the busts 1 from below, one of said straps having a longitudinal slit to receive the other strap therethrough in fastening the brassiere at a point substantially between the breasts.
2. A brassiere comprising a body having a rear portion, two bust covering portions, a fastening 1 strap extending outwardly from each bust covering portion, a fastening element at the free end of each strap, and a plurality of complementary fastening elements along the lower edge of the body at each side thereof, one of said straps having a longitudinal slit through which the other strap passes in fastening the brasslere at a point substantially between the breasts, each of said straps being adapted to be secured to one of the fastening elements on opposite sides of the lower edge of the body whereby to permit of adjustments in girth and to support the busts from below.
