Description

July 20, 1954 s. DOLLARHIDE ADJUST-TO-FORM BRASSIERE Filed April 23, 1952 Ep c! INVEN'IOR. fizzej/Zifar/Z z'ae,
ATTD RN EYE Patented July 20, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to garments of the type adapted to be adjusted to the shape or form of the wearer, and in particular a brassiere having a bias fold extended into each of the cups and wherein the position of the bias fold is adjusted by tapes extended through tunnels in the shoulder straps and around the sides of the bodice to fastening means at the front.
The purpose of this invention is to provide supporting means in the lower sides of the cups of a brassiere and means for adjusting the position of the supporting means independent of the shoulder straps and cups whereby the conventional brassiere structure merely provides a cover or harness and supporting elements are adjustably mounted therein.
Various devices have been used for adjusting the houlder straps of a brassiere to compensate for the shape and position of the busts, however, by this means it is difiicult to prevent sagging as by this means the shoulder straps slide over the shoulders. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates supporting elements slidable through the shoulder straps and carried around the waist whereby bust supporting loops in the cups are adjustable independent of the positions of the shoulder straps, cups, and bodice.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for incorporating supporting elements in a garment whereby the positions of the supporting elements are adjustable in relation to the garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide an independently adjustable bust supporting element in a brassiere without changing the external appearance of the brassiere.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved brassiere having adjustable supporting elements in cups thereof in which the brassire is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a bodice having cups extended from circular openings therein with bias folds extended into the cups from the edges where the cups are stitched to the bodice and tapes extended through tunnels in the bias folds and also through tunnels in the shoulder straps and bodice to adjustable fastening means at the front.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view with the parts shown in perspective, of the brassiere, and with parts broken away.
Figure 2 isa rear elevational view of the bras sire also with parts broken away and shown in section.
Figure 3 is a detail showing a typical section through the lower part of one of the cups, illustrating the bias fold extended into the lower part thereof.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved brassiere of this invention includes a conventional bodice Iii, with cups 5! and 12 extended from the circular openings l3 and M in the front of the bodice and with straps l5 and i6 extended upwardly from the sections in which the cups are positioned and adapted to extend over the shoulders and downwardly to sections l1 and [8 of the back of the bodice.
In the design shown the cups are formed with inserts I9 and 20 in the lower portion and the inserts are provided with cross stitching 2i and 22, respectively.
With the parts arranged in this manner bias folds, as indicated by the numerals 23 and 24 extend from the points 25 and 26 Where the cups are stitched to the bodice inwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and tapes as indicated by the numerals 21 and 28 extend through the bias fold and through tunnels, as indicated by the numerals 28 and 29 in the shoulder straps and from the rear ends of the shoulder straps the tapes extend through tunnels 39 and 3| in the lower edge of the bodice with the ends thereof extended through openings 32 and 33 at the front thereof. The extended ends of the tapes pass through straps 34 and 35 and the ends are connected with adjustable fasteners 35 so that the tapes may be drawn through the tunnels of the shoulder straps to accurately position the bias folds 23 and 24, and when these folds are in a comfortable position the ends of the tapes are secured with the fastener 36.
The bodice I0 is provided with conventional fastening elements, as indicated by the numeral 31, at the back.
With the parts arranged in this manner the bodice of the brassiere may be adjusted to the indvidual and with this in position the tapes 2? and 28 are drawn through the tunnels of the shoulder straps to such positions that the busts are comfortably supported and held in the position desired. At this time the ends of the tapes are secured at the front whereby the supporting elements are adjusted independent of the struc ture of the brassiere.
It will be understood that modifications within the scope of the appended claims may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. An adjustable brassiere comprising a bodice having shoulder straps, and cups extended from spaced openings at the front, tunnels extending around the cups through the shoulder straps and then downwardly and around. the lower portion of the bodice and terminating at the central portion thereof, bias folds secured to the edges of the cups outlining the cups and extended into the cups from the edges of the cups from where the edges of the cups are secured to the bodice, and tapes extended through said tunnels and secured together at the interrupted portion of the tunnels.
2. An adjustable brassiere comprising a bodice having shoulder straps with tunnels extended longitudinally therethrough and having cups extended from spaced circular openings at the front, bias folds secured to the edges of the cups outlining the cups and extended into the cups from the edges thereof and secured to the bodice at points where edges of the cups are secured to the bodice, said tunnels extending around the cups within the bias folds through the shoulder straps and then downwardly and around the lower portion of the bodice and terminating at the central portion thereof, and tapes extended through the tunnels in the bias folds and through the tunnels of the shoulder straps and bodice and secured together at the interrupted portion of the tunnels.
3. An adjustable brassiere comprising a bodice having shoulder straps with tunnels extended longitudinally therethrough and having cups extended from spaced circular openings at the front, bias folds secured to the edges of the cups outlining the cups and extended into the cups from the edges thereof and secured to the bodice at points where edges of the cups are secured to the bodice, said tunnels extending around the cups within the bias folds through the shoulder straps and then downwardly and around the lower portion of the bodice and terminating at the central portion thereof, tapes extended through the tunnels in the bias folds and through the tunnels of the shoulder straps and bodice and secured together at the interrupted portion of the tunnels, and a fastener for adjustably connecting the ends of the tapes.
