FRANCES nnnvnnrcn, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
DETACHABLE EBRASSIERE AND CORSET COMBINATION.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 30, 1920. Serial No. 400,051.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, FRANoEs HnINDRIoeI, a citizen of the 'United States of America,
residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Brassiere and'Corset Combination, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garments and has special reference to a detachable brassiere and corset combination.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved garment embodying in itself a novel combination of brassiere and corset wherein the two may be separated from each other'and either worn separately.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein one corset may be utilized in combination with a number of brassieres so that the latter may be washed whenever soiled from perspiration or the like while the corset proper, containing the stiffening steels, will not need to be washed as it does not come in contact with the body but is worn over an undergarment.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a combination of this character wherein avariety of brassieres may be utilized with one corsetso that brassieres of diiferent materials and colors can be combined with the single corset proper thus enabling the wearer to suit the color and material of the brassiere to the garments worn therewith.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
' Figure l is a perspective view of the garment when the two parts are used together, the parts being shown connected.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the brassiere detached, the lower part being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the corset detached showing the manner in which the' same is held together at the front when used alone.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated, there has been disclosed a garment composed of a brassiere having side pieces 10 and a front piece 11. This front piece extends well down below the side pieces as indicated at 12 and may be provided, if desired, with suitable stiffening. To the lower end of the front piece are attached the garters 13. One side of the brassiere is open and provided on one edge with hooks 14 and on the other edge with eyes 15 so that after the garment is placed on the body of the wearer this side opening may be closed. Furthermore the rear edges of the side portion are separate and provided with eyelets 16 for the reception of a lacing 17 in the usual manner. I also preferably provide shoulder straps 18 for these side portions and place adjacent the rear end of these shoulder straps and on the outside thereof stiffening 19 in the form of steel or whalebone. Along the edges of the downwardly extending portion 12 of this brassiere are eyes 20 and the lower end of the portion 12 is split as at 21 so that it may be fitted to the wearer by means of a lacing 22 passing through eyelets 23.
The corset proper consists of two side portions 24 stiffened with suitable steels or braces 25 and having its upper and lower edges suitably connected by tapes 26. The rearedges of these side portions are provided with eyelets 27 and connected by lacing 28 while the front edges are provided with hooks 29 which, when the garment is used in connection with the brassiere, engage in the eyes 20 of the latter to connect the two parts. IVhen, however, the cor set is used separately lacing 30 is engaged back and forth around the hooks so as to enable the front edges of the corset sides to be drawn toward each other. It is to be noted that preferably. when the corset is used alone, the lacing 28 is loosened so that the front edges may be drawn quite close by the lacing 30. On the contrary when used in connection with the brassiere the lower portion 12 of the brassiere front serves to hold the front edges of the corset together and fitting properly to the body may be accomplished by tightening the lacing 28. It will be noted that the top and bottom of the corset ends are reinforced by tapes 31 and that the corset halves may also be provided with garters 32.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a single corset may be used with two or more brassieres so that in case of the brassieres becoming. soiled or stained from prespiration the one in use may be detached from the corset for washing and another substituted. Furthermore these brassieres may be of any desired material and color so that the wearer may have brassieres to suit the garment with which they are worn. It will be understood that this is especially desirable where the outer garments are of transparent or semi-transparent material and the brassiere visible therethrough.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a garment of the class described, a brassiere having a complete body encircling portion and a front central portion extending downward, a corset having a front vertical opening, and means carried on the side edges of the downwardly extending portion of the brassiere and the edges of the front corset opening to connect said edges and therebyunite the brassiere and corset.
2. In a garment of the class described, a brassiere having its front central portion extending downward, a corset having a front opening, means carried on the side edges of the downwardly extending portion of the brassiere and the edges of the front corset opening to connect said edges and thereby unite the brassiere and corset, means to adjust the circumferential dimension of the brassiere, and other means to adjust the circumferential dimension of the corset.
3. In a garment of the class described, a brassiere having its front central portion extending downwardly, a corset having a front opening, hooks on the edges of the corset at its opening, and eyes on the edges of the downwardly extending portion of the brassiere receiving said hooks, said hooks being adaptedto receive a lacing when disengaged from said eyes whereby to connect the edges of the front opening and thereby permit wearing of the corset as a separate garment.
e. In a garment of the class described, a brassiere having its front central portion extending downwardly, a corset having a front opening, hooks on the edges of the corset at its opening, eyes on the edges of the downwardly extending portion of the hrassiere receiving said hooks, said hooks being adapted to receive a lacing when disengaged from said eyes, means to adjust the circumferential dimension of the brassiere,
.brassiere receiving said hooks, said hooks being adapted to receive a lacing when disengaged from said eyes, said brassiere and corset each being constructed of two lateral portions, a lacing connecting the lateral portions of the brassiere, and a second lacing connecting the lateral portions of the corset.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
FRANCES I-IEINDRICH.
