OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 03. MICHIGAN.
BELT consn'r. i
Application filed "March 26, 1920. Serial lIo. 369,055.
To all 'w/mm z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr Smcnn, a c1t1- zen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Belt Corsets, of which the following is a specii'ication, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new article of manufacture which may be termed a belt corset, the object being to provide a garment primarily designed for the use of persons who cannot comfortably wear an ordinary corset or who, for any reason do not care to wear the same, said garment providing a mounting for hose supporters and giving to some extent a corset eflect. The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as embodied in a garment of the front lacing type, the same being shown opened out;
Figure 2 is a similar view, showing a back lacing garment;
Figure 3 is an enlarged view of one of the elastic side portions of the garment;
Figure l is a section, taken on line 41-42 of Figure 8, and showing how the garment conforms to the body of the wearer.
The garment shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4 comprises a pair of non-elastic'front sections A and B connected by a lacing C, a non-elastic back section D and a pair of corresponding elastic side or hip sections E and connected to said back section at each side of the same and respectively linking said back section to the front section B and to a non-elastic strip F. The latter carries a vertical. row of fasteners G which are engageable with a corresponding row of fasteners G upon the front section A, to hold the garment in embracing relation to the body of the wearer. The front sections A and B are of similar shape, having their remote edges relatively short as compared comprises a pair of similar non-elastic back sections T and K connected by a lacing J, a non-elastic front section K, and a pair of similar elastic side or hip sections L, one of which links the back section I to said front section, while the other links the other back section K to a non-elastic strip M, carrying a row of fasteners J for engagement with a corresponding row of fasteners J upon the front section.
In each of the described alternative forms of the invention, the elastic side portions are adapted to conform to the engaged waist portions of the body by sliting the upper portion of each of said sections substantially across its full width, as is indicated at N, said slit being concealed and the edges thereof being held in proximity by nonelastic strips 0 superposed upon the slit at each side of the garment and stitched together through the slit at P and also through the elastic fabric at P and P The lacings in both disclosed forms of the invention allow such adjustments as may be necessary to compensate for variations in the waist dimensions of the wearer such as continue for a more or less extended period, while temporary changes in such dimensions, as for example, those resulting merely from a change of posture are taken care of by the elasticity of. the side sections E or L. A central depending portion Q of the front section in the back lacing construction serves a similar purpose to the tongues H of the sections A and B of the front lacing garment, the hose supporters Q being attached thereto. By virtue of the slot N in the elastic sections, the portions of said. sections above and below said slot are free to flare relatively so as to conform readily to the waist curvature of the body of the wearer.
The described garment, since it engages only the waist portion of the body, can be worn by many persons who, because of their figure, would find a corset quite uncomfortable. Said garment in such cases provides a substitute for the corset, carrying the hose supporters and permitting such compression of the figure at the waist line as may be desired.
What I claim as my invention is fl. An undergarment, comprising elastic side portions for engaging the waist of the wearer, said portions being respectively slotted along the waist line to facilitate flaring of said portion to conform with the waist curvature, and a non-elastic member coextensive with said slot connecting the por- 5 tions marginal to said slot, and concealing the latter.
2. An undergarment, comprising elastic side portions for engaging the waist of the wearer, said portions being respectively slot- 10 ted along the waistline to facilitate flaring of said portion to conform with the waist curvature, non-elastic members covering said slot at each side of the garment, a row of stitching registering with the slot and connecting said non-elastic members through I JOSEPH SIEGEL.
