This invention relates to women's slips and has for its object to provide an improved garment of this type.

Another object of the invention is to provide a slip which is simple in construction, pleasing in appearance, and economical to manufacture, and which will always retain its correct position on the body with perfect comfort and freedom of movement to the wearer.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a ready-made slip of the above type having the characteristics of a tailored garment but further embodying special novel features of construction which enable a garment of given size to accommodate itself to figures of varying proportions, thus insuring a better fit than heretofore and permitting the manufacturer to reduce the number of sizes carried in stock.

Perfection of fit in women's slips is important not only from the standpoint of comfort in wearing the slip itself, but also because the hang and fit of the outer garments depends largely upon the. hang and fit of the slip which lies beneath. Heretofore it has been dimcult to obtain the desired ilt except in slips which are tailored to personal dimensions, the principal reason being 1 that it has been impossible to construct a readymade'slip of a given stock sizen" which will accommodate itself to variations in the measurements of difl'erent individuals. An ill-fitting slip will not only ride up on the figure, to the discomfort of the wearer, but will also develop wrinkles or folds which are visible through the outer garments. v

My invention provides a ready-made slip which avoids the foregoing disadvantages and embodies special novel features of construction which enable it to be worn with perfect comfort and improved fit by different individuals who take the same size garment but who differ somewhat in bust, diaphragm or abdominal measurements. In its preferred form, my slip comprises a skirt portion and a connected bust portion of inelastic material, in which the upper rear edge of the skirt portion is tapered or sloped in the general shape of an inverted V lying below the sides of the bust portion. A pair of crossed elastic straps are provided at the back of the garment with their ends connected to the sides of the bust portion, while the lower edge of each strap is secured for a part of its length to the upper rear edge of the skirt portion along a branch of said inverted V, each strap being otherwise disconnected from the skirt portion and from the other strap of the pair.

As a result of this construction, the elastic straps, which are preferably of substantial width and constitute the upper rear portion of the slip, yieldingly tension the bust portion of the garment and the upper front portion of the skirt upon the body while permitting the skirt portion to hang freely in gracefully flowing lines. In the preferred form of the invention, furthermore, I provide spaced elastic inserts in the bust portion of the slip in position to shape the bust receiving areas thereof. The skirt may also be pleated longitudinally and in such case the folds of the pleats are preferably tapered longitudinally and stitched together at their juncture with the bust portion, facilitating the free suspension of the skirt upon the figure. The entire construction enables the garment to accommodate itself to variations in the measurements of different individuals with perfect smoothness and freedom of movement to the wearer.

These and other features and advantages of the invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

The slip shown in the drawing comprises a form-fitting bust portion l and a skirt portion 2 which is connected thereto at the front by stitches 3 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The bust portion I and skirt portion 2 may be made of any suitable inelastic fabric, either plain or biased, as desired. The upper rear edge 4 of the skirt portion 2 is tapered in the general shape of an inverted V and lies below the sides 5 of the bust portion I as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.

Spaced elastic gores or inserts l are disposed in the bust portion I, in position to shape the bust receiving areas thereof as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. I prefer to construct the inserts 6 of elastic fabric which is stretchable only in a horizontal direction. such for example as Laton, a one-way stretch elastic fabric having woven rubber strands imparting the elasticity thereto.

55 stituting the upper rear portion of the slip, have their ends connected to the respectivesides of the bust portion l and part-way down the sides of the skirt portion 2, preferably to a point which coincides generally with the region of the diaphragm. The strap 1 has its lower edge 9 secured for approximately half its length to the upper rear edge 4 of the skirt portion along one branch of the inverted V, while the strap 8 has its lower edge 18 similarly secured for approximately half of its length to the upper rear edge 4 of said skirt portion along the other branch of said inverted V, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. Each of the elastic straps 1 and 8 is otherwise disconnected from the skirt and from the other strap of the pair. The straps 1 and 8 may be made of two-way stretch elastic fabric, but I prefer to make them of elastic fabric which is stretchable only in a longitudinal direction, such as the Laton above referred to.

The skirt portion 2 of the garment is preferably provided with pleats l2 which extend longitudinally at the sides of the garment as shown in Figs. 1 to 8. The pleats I! are folded as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and the folds of the pleats are tapered inwardly as illustrated at l3 and the upper ends of the abutting edges of the folds are secured together by stitches l4 adjacent their juncture with the upper edge of the skirt portion 2. Suitable shoulder straps l5 are secured to the apices of the bust portion 1 and to the upper edges of the crossed straps I and 8 at the back of the garment as shown in Fig. 2.

The crossed elastic straps I and 8 are preferably of substantial width and constitute the upper rear portion of the slip. These straps, being stretchable in a longitudinal direction, yieldingly tension the bust portion I and the upper front of the skirt portion 2 in the region of the diaphragm, thereby fitting these portions of the slip snugly and smoothly over the regions of the body where folds or wrinkles would otherwise be most likely to occur, while permitting the pleated skirt portion 2 to hang freely on the figure and to fall in gracefully flowing lines as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.

The elasticity of the straps I and 8 at the back of the slip, and of the inserts 6 in the bust portion, permits extension of the garment which enables it to be slipped on and off with ease. The elasticity of these portions likewise enables the garment to accommodate itself to variations in the measurements of different in-- dividuals. For this reason my improved garment may be worn with perfect satisfaction by diiierent individuals who take the same size garment but who differ somewhat in bust, diaphragm or abdominal measurements. This enables the manufacturer to insure different individuals a better fit than heretofore while permitting him to reduce the number of stock sizes required for this purpose.

Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been set forth for purposes of illustration, the invention is capable of various modifications and adaptations as will be apparent to a person skilled in the art. The invention is therefore to be limited only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.

The invention claimed is:

1. A slip comprising a skirt, a bust panel formed substantially entirely oi non-elastic material connected thereto and extending to substantially the sides of the garment, the side edges of said bust panel being of substantial width and extending above and below the centers of the busts, and a back panel extending substantially entirely across the back and comprising upper and lower elastic straps of substantially the same width, together extending, at each side edge, the full width of the side edges of said bust panel and joined thereto along said side edges, said upper and lower elastic .straps being formed of one-way stretch material and extending respectively from said side edges in downwardly and upwardly inclined directions toward the center of the back to pull downwardly and upwardly respectively on the upper and lower portions of the bust pockets, so as to shape the same and to produce a confining, uplift action.

2. A slip comprising a skirt, a bust panel formed substantially entirely of non-elastic material connected thereto and extending to substantially the sides of the garment, the side edges of said bust panel being of substantial width and extending above and below the centers of the busts, and a back panel extending substantially entirely across the back and comprising crossed elastic straps of substantially the same width, together extending, at each side edge, the full width of the side edges of said bust panel and joined thereto along said side edges, said elastic straps being formed of one-way stretch material and extending respectively from said side edges in downwardly and upwardly inclined directions toward the center of the back to pull downwardly and upwardly respectively on the upper and lower portions of the bust pockets,

so as to shape the same and to produce a confining, uplift action.

3. A slip comprising a skirt, a bust panel formed substantially entirely of non-elastic material connected thereto and extending to substantially the sides of the garment, the side edges of said bust panel being of substantial width and extending above and below the centers of the busts, the upper rear edge of said skirt being in the form of an inverted V lying below the sides of said bust panel, and a back panel extending substantially entirely across the back and comprising crossed elastic straps of substantially the same width with their lower edges extending from the sides to the center along the two sides of said V and joined thereto, said straps together extending, at each side edge, the full width of the side edges of said bust panel and joined thereto along said side edges, said elastic straps being formed of one-way stretch material and extending respectively from said side edges in downwardly and upwardly inclined directions toward the center of the back to pullv downwardly and upwardly respectively on the upper and lower portions of the bust pockets, so as to shape the same and to produce a confining, uplift action.
