This invention relates to what are known as separable fasteners, and particularly, to the tapes for the stringers of devices of this kind; and the object of the invention is to provide a tape consisting of a wide unitary mounting and cover part having a longitudinal weakened portion with a supplemental link or scoop supporting tape narrower than the rst named tape and attached to the first named tape in juxtaposition to and longitudinally of the weakened portion of the first named tape so as to dispose the cover part of the first named'tape over at least one side surface of attached links or scoops of both stringers to provide a cover or sealing flap therefor or a means for spacing the linksl or scoops from the body of the wearer, especially in applying devices of this kind to garments worn directly upon the body of the wearer; a further object being to provide a Stringer tape construction wherein the narrower link supporting tape has at its free edge an enlarged or beaded portion; a further object being to provide a Stringer tape wherein the weakened portion thereof will serve to support and maintain the cover flap atly upon the links and to prevent the customary wave-like irregular contour to cover strips of this. kind as heretofore. employed; a still further object being to provide means for securing a projecting cover part or parts o f the tape to the narrow link supportingv tape and to the tape of the opposed Stringer to form neat and finished ends at both ends of the stringer which will facilitate proper attachment of the tapes to the supports at and in close proximity to the end links or\scoops of the fastener; and

with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a. device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, and which is more fully rhereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing' forms a part, in which the'separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

In Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawing, I have shown 10 one form of construction, and in these figures I0 and II represent the fastener stringers. The stringer I0 is composed of a wide tape I2 and a narrow link or scoop supporting tape I3 having a beaded edge I4 to which the links or scoops 15 I5 are secured. The tape I3 is stitched or otherwise secured longitudinally of the tape I2 as indicated at I 6, which stitchings are disposed outwardly of a longitudinal weakened portion II formed in the tape I2, said weakened portion 20 `being formed in the Weave of the fabric so as to provide Whatmight be termed a hinge coupling between the inner cover part I2a and the outer mounting part I2b of the tape. This construction serves to maintain the' part I2a in close 25 proximity to the links of the stringers and straight and :dat thereon throughout the length of the stringers, and avoids the customary buckling occasioned by the stitched attachment of the tape I3 on the line of stitching I6.

The tape II is of more or less conventional form and has at one edge the enlarged or beaded portion I8 to which the links or scoops I9 are attached. In .the construction shown, the beaded edge I4 of the tape I3 is united with the beaded 35 edge I 8 of the tape II by an end stop and coupling 20 and end stops 2|l and 22 are attached to said beaded edges at the other end of the stringers adjacent the end links thereon. It will be understood in this connection, however, that my invention is applicable to other types of Stringer construction with respect to end couplings of the tapes, as well as to what is known as detachable fasteners such as employed on, wind-breakers and other articles requiring com- ,J plete separation-of the stringers at both ends," in which latter case, the securing of the stringer tapes together at the joined end of the stringers as later described, will, of course, be eliminated.

With the type of construction shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, it is preferred that the tape I3 beyond the end stop ,2| be secured to the part I2a so as to form a unit part thereof, and this attachment is preferably made by an adhesive as diagrammatically indicated at 23 in Fig. 4 of 55 5 5 of Fig. 1

the drawing. It is also preferred that the entire part |2a of the tape I2 be secured to the tape I3 as Well as the stringer tape Il from a point adjacent the 'end stop 20 to the free end of the stringers by a. suitable adhesive as diagrammatically illustrated at 24 in Fig. 5 of the drawing. In this connection, it will be understood that by securing the tapes together in the manner described, a neat and finished appearance is provided at each end of the fastener and the proper attachment of the Stringer ends to the support is made possible. Different means of adhesive may be employed and the parts attached under pressure, or in some instances, under pressure and heat, depending entirely upon the use for which the fastener is intended.

In Fig. 6 of the drawing, a slight modication is shown, which consists simply in arranging the cover part 12a of the tape l2-upon the upper surface of the fastener links instead of on the lower surface thereof as in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, in other words, to cover the upper surface of the slider 25 including the nger piece or pull 26 thereof, which slider and pull are also shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing with the part l2a dispOsed upon the inner surface thereof. With the construction shown in Fig. 6, the part 12a of the tape l2 becomes an outer cover flap which conceals the scoops from view when applied to a garment or other support.

In Fig. '7 of the drawing, I have shown a further modiflcation wherein each stringer |011, 10b is similar to the Stringer I0, or, in other words, includes the narrow tape I3a attached thereto adjacent the weakened portion Ha. as indicated at 16a so that the inner cover parts 21, 21a of the stringers Illa, Ib are disposed above and below the links 28 attached to each tape |3a. In other words, the construction shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing combines both forms of construction shown in Figs. 1 and 6. This type of fastener will be applicable to uses where the combined function of the tapes is desirable when applied to certain articles of apparel or to articles of merchandise. In the latter case, it would be desirable in joining the ends of curtains, for example, to provide means for covering both inner and outer surfaces of the fastener so as to render the samesubstantially invisible.

In addition to the advantages heretofore named in connection with the glued or otherwise secured end portions of the cover part of the tape, attention is also directed to the fact that the securing of the cover part of the tape in this manner definitely and positively locates the proper position to be assumed'by the cover part of the tape in applying the stringers to their supports, and obviates the carelessness of an `operator stitching the cover part as well `as the mounting part of the tape to the support which might possibly occur if the secured ends were not employed. Of course, it will be understood that the glued or otherwise secured ends of the tape will be applied to the structure shown in Figs. 6 and 'I of the drawing.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1.*In separable fasteners employing stringers coupled and uncoupled by a slider movable 1ongitudinally thereof, a stringer comprising a narrow tape having coupling links spaced longitudinally of one edge thereof, a wide elongated tape having a weakened portion arranged longitudinelly thereof intermediate its side edges dividing said wide tape into a cover side portion and an attaching .side portion, and stitchings extending longitudinally of both tapes for securing the other edge of said 'narrow tape to the attaching side of said wide tape closely adjacent the weakened portion thereof to form a unitary Stringer structure of said narrow and wide tapes.

2. In separable fastener employing stringers coupled and uncoupled by a slider movable longitudinally thereof, a Stringer comprising a narrow tape having coupling links spaced longitudinally of one edgethereof, a wide elongated tape having a weakened portion arranged longitudinally thereof intermediate its side edges dividing said wide tape into a cover side portion and an attaching side portion, means extending longitudinally of both tapes on-the attaching side portion of the wide tape adjacent said weakened portion for securing said tapes together to form a unitary Stringer structure of said narrow and wide tapes, and means for cementing the overlapped portions of said wide and narrow tapes together beyond the end links of said stringer.

3. In separable fasteners employing stringers and a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple the same, each of said stringerscomprising link supporting tapes having links secured longitudinally of one edge portion thereof, said links terminating short of the ends of said tapes, at least one of said stringers having a wide tape arranged longitudinally of the link supporting tape of said Stringer and stitched thereto throughout the length thereof, the line of stitching being disposed intermediate the side edges of said Wide tape to divide said tape into a link covering part and a mounting part, the link covering part having a longitudinal weakened portion adjacent said line of stitching whereby said part will lie flatly upon the links secured to said tape, and said coupling part projecting beyond the outer edge of said link supporting tape.

4. In separable fasteners employing stringers and a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple the same, each of said stringers comprising link supporting tapes having links secured longitudinally of one edge portion thereof, said links terminating short of the ends of said tapes, at least one of said stringers having a wide tape arranged longitudinally of the link supporting tape of said Stringer and stitched thereto throughout the length thereof, the line of stitching being disposed intermediate the side edges of said wide tape to divide said tape into a link covering part and a mounting part, the link covering part having a longitudinal weakened portion adjacent said line of stitching whereby said part will lie flatly upon the links secured to said tape, said coupling part projecting beyond the outer edge of said link supporting tape, the cover part of the wide tape extending onto the link supporting tape beyond the end links thereon and being cemented thereto.

5. In separable fasteners employing stringers and a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers tocouple and uncouple the same, each of said stringers comprising link supporting tapes having links secured longitudinally of one edge portion thereof, said links terminating short of the ends of saidtapes, at least one of said stringers having a wide tape arranged longitudinally of the linkr supporting tape of said Stringer and stitched thereto throughout the length thereof, the line of stitching being disposed intermediate the side edges of :aid wide tape t0 divide said 75 tape into a, link covering part and a mounting part, the link covering part having a longitudinal weakened portion adjacent `said line of stitching whereby said part will lie atly upon the links secured to said tape, said coupling part projecting beyond the outer edge of said link supporting tape, the cover part of the wide tape extending onto the link supporting tape beyond the end links thereon and being cemented thereto, means coupling both stringers together adjacent the end links at one end thereof, and said cover strip being cemented to the link supporting strips of both stringers at said last named end portion thereof.

6. As an article of manufacture, a separable fastener comprising two stringers with a slider movable longitudinally thereof to couple and uncouple the same, each Stringer comprising an elongated narrow tape having coupling links attached to and spaced longitudinally of one edge portion thereof and terminating short of the ends of said tape and a, wide tape secured intermediate its side edges by longitudinal stitching to said narrow tape outwardly of the links thereon, said line of stitching dividing the wide tape into a link covering side part and a mounting side part extending beyond the outer edge of the narrow tape, and said link covering part having a weakened portion extending longitudinally thereof adjacent said line of stitching whereby said link covering part may lie flatly upon the links overlapped thereby.
