I 3 Claims. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an invisible slide fastener assem bly for garments. I

This invention is characterized by the provision of slide fasteners for closing the front opening of a garment in such a manner that the rows of slide fasteners will not be Visible from either side of the opening.

Still further it is proposed to attach the hook 10 fasteners to the edge of the opening in such a manner that its outer edge will be extended inwards from the outer edge of the material at the side of the opening, and to provide cover strips extending over the hook fasteners on the 18 other side thereof and which has its outer edge extending beyond the outer edge of the slide fastener in such a manner that the slide fasteners W111 be sandwiched between the two layers.

Still further it is proposed to have the adja- 20 cent edges of the material at the sides of the opening and the adjacent edges of the cover strips overlap in the closed position of the slide fasteners so as to conceal the fasteners from view.

25 A further objectof the invention is to provide slide fasteners at the edge opening of a garment of a triple layer construction having an intermediate lining layer with outer layers on either side thereof, and to connect the slide fasteners to the intermediate lining layer to relieve the stresses upon the outer layers to prevent them from wrinkling or exposing the fasteners when pressure is applied thereto.

It is also proposed to sandwich the slide fasten ers between the outer layers so that the two rows of slide fasteners will be concealed from view in the closed position thereof.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, ref- ,I erence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The invisible slide fastener assembly for garments, according to this invention, is to be used 10 in conjunction with a garment I0 having an opening III extending along the front thereof and which is adapted to be closed with slide fasteners. The dress I0 is of conventional construction and has the slide fasteners applied thereto in such fashion that when they are in the closed position they will not be viewable from either the inside or the outside of the dress.

The slide fastener comprises a hook stringer ll attached to one edge of the opening Ill and a hook stringer l2 attached to the other edge of the opening. These hook stringers are adapted to be interengaged with each other by a control slide I3. The hook stringers II and I2 are attached to the material of the garment along the sides of the opening II in such a manner that their outer edges will be set in from the outer edge of the material along the opening II). This is clearly shown in Fig. 2 and it will be noted that these hook stringers I I and I I2 are applied to the'garment in such a fashion that when they are inter-engaged with each other by the proper movement of the control slide I3 the adjacent edgesof the material at the side of the opening Ill will be overlapped as shown in Fig. 4 to conceal the hook stringers from view on the outer side of the garment.

A cover strip I4 for each of the hook stringers I I and I2 is engaged over the stringers in such a manner that they cooperate with the material 40 of the garment at the edges of the opening I0 to sandwich the stringers II and I2. The outer edges of the strips I4 are substantially aligned with the edges of the garment in the vicinity of the opening I0, and the cover strips are attached to the hook stringers and the garment by stitches I5 along the edges thereof.

As shown in Fig. 4 the cover strips I4 are so positioned with relation to the inter-engaging elements on the hook stringers II and I2 as to overlap in the closed. position thereof to conceal the hook stringers from view when looking from the inside of the dress.

The strips I4 comprise strips of material folded longitudinally of their length in a manner so that line 6-6 each of the strips will have two adjacent layers. The stitches l5 are adapted to hold the cover strips I4, the hook stringers H and I2, and the material at the edges of the opening ll) substantially adjacent to each other. The free ends of the cover strips l4 are adapted to be held together by stitches l6 and the free overlapping edges of the material at the side of the opening Ill are adapted to be held together by stitches IT.

The operation of the device is as follows:

For closing the opening Ill extending along the front of the dress Ill the control slide I3 is moved upwards to inter-engage the elements on the hook stringers H and I2 in such a manner that the material at the edge of the opening Ill will be overlapped to cover the front face of the hook stringers II and I2, while the adjacent ends of the cover strips l4 overlap to cover the rear faces of the hook stringers I I and I2. The overlapping portions which act to conceal the hook stringers also permit interchangement between themselves to hide frayed and worn edges. That is when one edge becomes frayed and worn the other edge may be exposed to hide the frayed edge and the hook fasteners.

According to the modification shown in Figs. 5-8 inclusive, a garment has an opening which is adapted to be closed by a slide fastener.

The garment has the material at the sides of the opening constructed of a triple layer consisting of a front layer of outer material 20, a rear layer of outer material 2|, and an intermediate lining layer 22 between the outer layers 20 and 2|.

The slide fastener comprises a hook stringer 23 attached to the material at one side of the opening and a hook stringer 2| attached to the material at the other side of the material and having a control slide 25 associated therewith for opening and closing the elements positioned upon the

hook stringers

23 and 24. A cover strip 26 is provided for each of the hook stringers and each cover strip 26 is attached to one of the outer layers 20 or 2| Each cover strip 26 has its outer edge set in from the outer edge of the other of said outer layers. These cover strips comprise strips of material folded longitudinally along their length and which have one of their edges securely attached to the edge of one of the outer layers by means of stitches 21. Stitches 28 'engage through the layers forming the cover strips 26 in the vicinity of the fold thereof for holding these strips in their folded condition.

The hook stringers 23 and 24 are attached to I the intermediate lining layer 20 and have their outer edges set in from the outer edges of their adjacent cover strips 26. Each of the hook stringers is sandwiched between the adjacent intermediate lining layers and cover strips, and each of the cover strips is attached to the hook stringers by stitches 29 along the-other edge thereof. These stitches 29 are also the means for connecting the stringers to the intermediate lining layer, and they are not visible from the outside of the garment.

A strip of finishing material 30 formed from the same material from which the outer layer 20 is formed is secured on those portions of the intermediate lining layer extending outside of the

stringers

23 and 24 to cover the lining layer. The stitches 29 also secure one of the edges of the finishing material 32 to the intermediate lining layer 22. The adjacent'ends of the outer layers, the intermediate lining layer 22, and the finishing tached together by a line of stitches 3|.

The operation of this form of the device is as follows:-

The control slide 25 is moved upwards for interengaging the elements on the

hook stringers

23 and 24, and while this is being done the adjacent edges of the front layer of outer material 20 and its adjacent cover strip 26 are being overlapped for covering the front face of the

hook stringers

23 and 24. At the same time the same thing is being done to the rear of the

hook stringers

23 and 24; that is, the adjacent edges of the rear outer layer 2| and its adjacent covering strip 26 are being overlapped to cover the rear face of the

hook stringers

23 and 24.

It is to be understood that the invisible slide fasteners may be applied to any portion of the garment adjacent an opening, without showing the stitching of the said slide. fastener on the outer side of the garment.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the .appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-

1. A device of the class described, comprising a garment having an opening to be closed with a slide fastener, which comprises a pair of hook stringers and a control slide, and the material at the sides of said opening being of triple layer construction, there being a front layer of outer material, a rear layer of outer material and an intermediate lining layer between said outer layers, and a cover strip for each hook stringer and each cover strip being attached to one of said outer layers and each cover strip having its outer edge set in from the outer edge of the other of said outer layers, said hook strings being attached on the intermediate lining layer and having their outer edges set in from the outer edges of their adjacent cover strips and each of said hook stringers being sandwiched between adjacent intermediate lining layers and cover strips and said cover strips being attached to the hook stringers by stitches along the edges thereof, the edges of said cover strips and the edges of the material of said garment at said openings being also interchangeable to hide worn and frayed edges caused by continuous wear.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a garment having an opening to be closed with a slide fastener which comprises a pair of hookstringers and a control slide, and the material at the sides of said opening being of triple layer construction, there being a front layer of outer material, a rear layer of outer materal and an intermediate lining layer between said outer layers, and a cover strip for each hook stringer and each cover strip being attached to one of said outer layers and each cover strip having its outer edge set in from the outer edge of the other of said outer layers, said hook stringsbeing attached on the intermediate lining layer and having their outer edges set in from the outer edges of their adjacent cover strips and each of said hook stringers being sandwiched between adjacent interm'ediate lining layers and cover strips and said cover strips being attached to the hook stringers by stitches along the edges thereof the edges of said cover strips and the edges of the material of said garment at said openings being also interchangeable to hide worn and frayed edges caused by continuous wear, strips of finishing material secured on those portions of said intermediate lining layer which extend outside of said stringers. I

3. A device of the class described, comprising a garment having an opening to be closed with a slide fastener which comprises a pair of hook stringers and a control slide, and the material at the sides of said opening being of triple layer construction, there being a front layer of outer material, a. rear layer of outer material and an intermediate layer between said outer layers, and a cover strip for each hook stringer and each cover strip being attached to one of said outer layers and each cover strip having its outer edge set in from the outer edge of the other of said outer layers, said hook strings being attached on the intermediate lining layer and having their outer edges set in from the outer edges of their adjacent cover strips and each of said hook stringers being sandwizhed between adjacent intermediate lining layers and cover strips and said cover strips being attached to the hook stringers by stitches along the edges thereof the edges of said cover strips and the edges of the material of said garment at said openings being also interchangeable to hide worn and frayed edges caused by continuous wear, said cover strips comprising strips of material folded longitudinally along their lengths, and means for holding said strips in their folded condition.
