(o1. 2-128) 4'I'he'present invention relates to slide fastener constructions, particularly useful in connection with garments,v notablyshirts and similar wearing apparel which itis customaryto iron or press.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a construction wherein ironingor pressing of the garment will not cause unsightly embossing or impressing of the slide structure in the overlying `cloth layer.
An equally important object of the invention is to provide a built-fup-.construction in which the slide fastener, namely, the stringers in connected relation, is so nested that the overlying cloth layer presents a smoothcontinuous appearance wholly m'askingthe presence of the slide fastener.

Figure 7 is a front view of a modied construction and illustrating the Vmanner in which the slidermembers are initiallyembossed into the shirt facing;
'Figure 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Figure 7; and
Figure 9 is a `detailview of a strip of the type shown in Figure 5 `provided with a thermoplastic layer for the purpose of producing the initial embossment. n .The invention will bede scribedrin ,connection 2 with a mans shirt for purposes of illustration, it being understood that the construction is useful wherever recourse is had to slide fasteners.
Referring to Figure 1, the shirt front is shown with its sections li-i l connected-by a slide fastener of conventional character indi-catedK as a whole at I2 and having the usual interengaging stringers lf3-I4. i The longitudinal Vedges of the shirt opening are connected at the front, there being an overlying edge |5 and an underlying edge It. The underlying edge I6 has the material outfolded as at l1 with the marginof the folded portion stitched. at I8. Spaced inwardly from lthe stitching I8 is a Stringer tape I9 carrying the stringers i3 and which is stitched at 2li-2l to the section i0 ofthe shirt, as shown in Figure 3,- and is coextensive with the shirt opening.k
As shown in Figure 3, the section Il of the shirt has an outfolded portion 22 to which is stitched at 23 a Stringer strip 2li carryingV the Stringer I4, lalso coextensive with the shirt opening. i
lStitched at 25 to the section Il at a point spaced inwardly from the folded edge 22 is a combined covering layer and sliderl structure receiving or nesting member c oextensive with the shirt opening and indicated as a whole at 26. This member 26, as shown in Figures 1 and 3I is plane and uninterruptedon its outer surface as at 21, and -coversand conceals the slide structure when the stringers thereof are interengaged. Further, Yas best shown in Figure 3, this member 26 on its-inner side, fhas a nest or longitudinally extending recess 28 for receiving the interengaging stringers, this nest being coextensive ywith the stringers and located so as to receive them when they are-interengaged.
Referring to Figure 3, the member 25 comprises a facing layer 29 which encloses a reinforcing or stiffening strip 3B and the recess forming ystrip 3| shown in Figure 2. This strip has fa flexible or stiff base 32 and spaced parallel ridges 33. These ridges may be made of cords or threads or plastic strips of a suitable thickness stitched to the base as at 34. The recess or-space 28 between the ridges is wide and deep enough and so located as to receive the slider structure when the stringers are interengaged, whereby the Yfacing surface 21 will remain plain and smooth when the shirt yis ironed. That is, there will be substantially complete absence of an unsightly embossment or impression as heretofore createdl whe'n;the nest or recess 28k was not provided. It willbe noted that the facing layer. 29, as `shown slider structure will be received in the nest 2B,y whence the outer surface 21 of the member 2G' Referring to Figures 1 :i1-niiet5 it'willbe noted" that the stringers I3 and I4 'are dispo-sed interiorly of the edges of the shirtropening; if.. e.-,. the*- stringer I3 being covered by the section YI0 and the Stringer I4 being covered by the member 26:
This invention may take many forms, the principal featurebeing a nesting portion or lrecess 2.8. for freely receiving the interen-gaged' stringers andwhich is of such construction that the outer face ZI of the member 2,6 Will be free of embo-ssments upon ironing the connected edges ofv the shirtopening.
Referring to Figure 5, instead off having a. pair of spaced parallel ridges 33, as shown. in Figure 2, only a single ridge is employed indicated at' 50. This-.ridge or cord is carriedl by a backing strip I to which it is stitched? and the backing strip is stitched toareinforcing layer 52 of'fabric, a single line ofi stitching 53 being employed for. uniting the cord and thestrips 52-53, or twoor more lines of stitching may be utilized.
Referring to Figures 4 ando, the .assembly, as shov'vnin Figure 5', is stitched toi-the member 2.5 by a line of stitching 54'- and forms a suitable nest for receiving the slide-r structure whereby the` facing surface 2 will remain plain and smooth When the shirt is ironed.
Referring to Figures 7, 8 and 9, there is illustrated a further embodiment of the inventio-nwherein means are provided for additionally insuring 4that the slider structure will not be emibossed or impressedl in the` facing surf-ace 2l 'ofthe member 26. To this end. the `cord` 55* is stitched directly tothe front section I'I of the shirt, as sho-Wn in Figure 8 by a line of stitching- 56. A strip of material, as 'shown iii-Figure 9- consisting of the backing layer 5I `to which -isstitched a layer` of thermoplastic mater-iai 58, 'as at 59, is interposed beneath the interfol'ded layer Glil on the inner side'o-f the member 26. as shown irl-Figure 8. The stringer structurev Hl` is interposed between the layer S3, andthe inner portion of they loop of the shirt section Il which en'- closes the cord 55, as Vshovvn in Figure 8 at 5I, and' thewhole assembly stitched together asby the single line of stitching 56 or several lines of; stitching may be employed to unite the cord, theA stringer I4, and the layers 5.1 and 58A to the member 26 in the manner shown.
The purpose of this construction is to permit theembossment of the-layers 58V and 6l), as shown at 62 in Figures 7 'and 8 to additionally provide pockets for the slider and which Will also serve:
to register` the members of the slider and hold:
them against displacement. This feature `is im portant in that it serves to additionally main-- tainrthe@ surface 21 smoothand plane luponv iron;-
ing yand also helps to prevent catching of the:
freefedges of the shirt front inthe sliderfstruc'- turewhen the sameis -'being operated. In. this` connection. lit will be noted. that in. all forms'i'o'f:
the present invention the slider structure is so located as to make it extremely difficult for the free edges of the shirt sections to be entangled in the slider structure as it ismanipulated.
The embossment may be formed in any suitable manner, as by assembling the layers 51 and 58 beneath the layer 60 and attaching the Stringer Ik by; stitching and-@thenfsubjecting the assembled'V structure to 'a suitable heating and pressing operation which will fuse the plastic "layer 58 to impregnato the layer 51 with the plastic: and impress the recesses 62 in the layer 60 by using the slider as a molding member. Of coi-irse;- lthe4entire1assembly, as shown in Figure 8; canbe 'rstproduced and then pressed to mold they recesses 62irrt'l`1e layer 60, if desired.
