APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1 I, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
MAX BERKWITS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
Application filed June 11, 1920. Serial No. 388,258.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Mex BERKWITS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York,
Another object is to provide a coat which in one position provides a plain exterior and when worn reversed presents a contrasting, preferably, a fancy appearance.
Another object is to render the coat exceedingly strong and durable and to insure a proper fit without danger of bulging parts.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of thisspecification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the coat as worn with the fancy side out;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the coat a worn with the plain side out; I
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the coat on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view of one of. the front flaps and a portion of the side to whichit .is attached, the section being on the lineA- l of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section of the coat on the line 5'-5 of Fig. 1 and showing more particularlythe bottom lining.
The coat in its general construction come prises a body 10, sleeves 11 and a collar 12,
and pockets 13 and .14. aswell as a reversible belt 15 are preferably associated with the body 10. The body 10 consists of front flaps 20 and 21, sides 22, 23 and a back 24:,
and the front flaps 20, 21 are adapted to overlie one the other when the coat is worn.
The said flaps jean 'be fastened together,
when the coat isworn as shown in Fig. 1, either by buttons "25 and buttonholes 26, or
by, buttons 27 T and buttonholes 28. It is Fig. 3), and the buttons 27 and buttonholes 26 are on the flap 21. When the coat is worn as shown in Fig. 2 the flaps 20 and 21 can be fastened together by the use of buttons 29 and buttonholes 26 or by buttons 30' and buttonholes 28, it being understood that I the buttons 29 are on the flap 2O directly opposite the buttons 25 while'the buttons 30 are on the flap 21 directly opposite the buttons 27, as plainly indicatedinFig. 3.
The coat is made of single pieces of a two-faced material to provide a desired contrast when the coatis worn with either side out. The two-faced material may be leather or rubber on one face and cotton or wool on the other face, or wool on one face and cotton on the other face, with one face preferablyfancy as shown in Fig. 1, and the other face plain as shown in Fig. 2, but it is expressly understood that I do not limit myself to any particular texture or quality of the two-faced material. The sleeves 11, the sides 22, 28, and the back 24, and the pockets 13 and 14 are made of single pieces of such two-faced material, while the collar 12, the front flaps 20, 21 and the belt 15 are each made double, that is, of two pieces of the two-faced material with the pieces overlying one the other, with the outer contrasting but in harmony with the adjacent faces of the other body portions. By reference to Fig. 1, it will be noticed that the outer face of the coat is of checkered material and when the coat is turned inside out and the belt 15 is reversed, as shown in'Fig. 2, then the coat has the appearance of being made of a plain material. When the collar 12 is turned down, as shown in Fig. 1, it appears plain 011 the outside, and when the collar 12 is turned down, with the coat in the position shown in Fig. 2, then it appears checkered, in either case heightening the appearance of the coat when the latter is worn with either side out. In practice, the front flaps 20 and 21 are connected with the corresponding sides 22, 23 by revers seams (see Fig. 4) to provide a fine finish for the coat with either side out.
The bottom edges of the sides 22, 23 and the back 24 are provided on one face with abinding 40 of a double-faced material with the outer face corresponding to that of the adjacent faceof the sides 22, 23 and the back 24. As illustrated m. Fig. 1, the binding 40 has its outer face checkered as the binding is attached to the checkered face of the sides 22, 23 and the back 24. The outer end of each sleeve 11 is provided with a similar binding 45 of a two-faced material with the outer face checkered in harmony with the sleeve face to which the binding is secured. It will be noticed that the bindporting the belt 15 in position when the coat is worn with either side out and with the belt correspondingly reversed, as will be readily understood y reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The belt 15 is provided at one end with buttonholes 52, 53 adapted to engage a set of buttons 54 or a set of buttons 55 on the opposite faces'of the other end of said belt. Thus when the belt is worn as shown in Fig.1, the buttonholes 52 53 engage the buttons 54, and when the belt is worn as shown in Fig. 2 the biittonholes 52 53 engage the buttons 55. The buttons 54 correspond in appearance to the buttons 25 and 27 while the buttons 55 correspond in appearance to the buttons 29 and 30. a
From the foregoing it will be seen that the wearer-can readily wear the coat with either side out, and the coat when worn in one position provides a plain exterior and when reversed presents a more fancy appearance. It will also be noticed that in case one face of the two-faced material is Inadeof leather,
rubber, or other water resisting material then the coat when worn with such face out protects the wearer against rain, moisture or the like.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an article of manufacture, a double coat adapted to be worn with either side out, comprising two front flaps adapted to overlie'each other, sides, a back and sleeves,'the said sides, back and sleeves being made of single pieces of two-faced material, and each of the said front flaps being made of two pieces of two-faced material fastened together in overlying relation with the diiferent faces exposed.
2. As an article of manufacture, a double coat adapted to be worn with either side out,
, comprising two front flaps adapted to over- He one the other, sides, a back and sleeves, the said sides, back and sleeves being made of single pieces of two-faced material and each of the said front flaps being made of two pieces of two-faced material fastened together in overlying relation with the different faces exposed, each of the front flaps having a single row of buttonholes adjacent the outer edge and two rows of buttons on the faces adjacent the inner edge.
3. As an article of manufacture, a double coat adapted to be worn with either side out, comprising two front flaps, two sides, a back, two sleeves and a collar, the said front flaps and collar being each made of two pieces of two-faced material overlying one the other with the different faces exposed, the
said sides, back and sleeves bein each made of a piece of two-faced materia the corresponding outer faces of the double front flaps and double collar being on the same side with the corresponding faces of the single pieces of the sides, back and sleeves.
4. As an article of manufacture, a double coat adapted to be worn with either side out, comprising two front flaps adapted to overlie one the other, sides, a back and sleeves, the said sides, back and sleeves being made of single pieces of two-faced material, and each of the said front flaps being made of two pieces of two-faced material fastened together in overlying relation with the different faces exposed, and a binding of a strip of two-faced material attached to the ends of the sides and back and at one face thereof, the face of the binding corresponding to the faces of the sides and back to which 1t is attached.
5. As an article of manufacture, a double coat adapted to be worn with either side out, comprising two front flaps adapted to overlie one the other, sides, a back and sleeves, the said sides, back and sleeves being made of single pieces of two-faced material and each of the said front flaps being made of two pieces of two-faced material fastened together in overlying relation with the different faces exposed, and a binding of a strip of two-faced material attached, to the outer end of each sleeve at one face thereof,
the face of the'binding corresponding to the face of the sleeve to which it is attached. MAX BERKWITS;
