1 4 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures REVERSIBLE FUR GARMENT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to improvements in fur garments. In particular, the invention relates to a reversible fur garment and a method of producing the garment.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART Fur garments of the prior art are generally constructed of animal fur sections which are secured to each other along marginal edge portions in a manner which provides a substantially continuous fur surface on the outer side of the garment. Since it was only necessary to secure the fur sections so as to produce a continuous fur surface on the outer side of the garment, it was thus unimportant to pre-cut the fur sections so as to provide a specific seam pattern on the reverse, or inner side. Linings, pads, and seaming tapes are provided to cover the inner side of the garment. This resulted in additional cost and additional weight.

My U.S. application Ser. No. 229,538, filed Feb. 25, 1972 which issued as U.S. Pat. No. 3,735,421, dated May 29, 1973, relates to a Fur Skin Hand Mitten comprised entirely of fur skins having a fur surface on the outside of the back portion and a fur surface on the inside of the front portion. None of these patents relate to a reversible fur coat such as the coat which I have invented, having a substantially continuous surface of fur on one side and a predominantly smooth dressed or tanned surface on the reverse side wherein the sections of fur skins which are secured to form the coat have a predetermined configuration and the welt seams are covered with elongated finished strips to seal and conceal the seams on that side of the coat so as to provide it with reversible capability- SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Broadly stated, the invention relates to a reversible garment having on one side a surface predominantly of natural animal fur and on the reverse side thereof a predominantly dressed or tanned surface of animal skin. The garment is comprised of pre-cut sections of natural fur skins having on one side a surface of natural animal fur and on the reverse side a dressed or tanned surface.
Means are provided to secure the sections together along marginal portions thereof to form finished seams on the fur side. Elongated cover sections are positioned over the seams on the dressed or tanned side of the garment in a manner which conceals and protects the seams on the tanned side while at the same time providing an aesthetically pleasing appearance which corresponds to the configurations of the sections.
In the preferred embodiment natural animal skins are pre-cut in the form of substantially similarly configured sections and are sewn together either by a machine or hand-made stiches to form a lady's coat. The elongated seam cover sections are preferably of the same animal skin material as is used for the body of the coat and the cover sections are secured on one side of the welt seam formed between adjacent pre-cut sections by the same stitches which are used to secure the sections together. The cover section is secured over the welt seam with the fur side facing outwardly and thus providing a contrasting aesthetically pleasing appearance. It is noted that any elongated cover sections may be used to protect and conceal the welt seams on the dressed or tanned side of the garment. However, it is desirable that the outer surface of the elongated cover sections seal and conseal the welt seams and blend with the dressed or tanned surface to provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
The garment may be produced of pre-cut sections which are similarly configured as rectangles, squares, triangles, circles and the like. While it is preferred that the garment be comprised of such similarly configured sections, any combination of configurations which complement each other to form an entire garment is accordingly contemplated herein. It is only preferred that the pre'cut sections be so configured that upon assembling them to form an entire garment, the elongated cover sections which are secured over the seams formed by adjacent sections provide a pleasing appearance when the predominantly smooth dressed or tanned surface is exposed. This appearance, of course, is partially determined by the configurations of the precut sections.
The invention also pertains to a garment made according to the above description wherein the pre-cut sections are comprised of a synthetic or simulated animal skin on one side and on the reversed side a surface having upstanding therefrom a plurality of dense synthetic fibers arranged to simulate an animal fur. Elongated cover sections of the same material as the pre-cut sections are positioned over the welt seams formed between adjacent secured pre-cut sections with the simulated fur surface facing outwardly and contrasting with the simulated animal skin surface. Such a garment would be less expensive than a garment made of natural animal skins.
The invention also pertains to a method of securing together synthetic or natural animal fur sections having on one side a synthetic or natural fur surface and on the reverse side a synthetic or natural animal skin surface. The method comprises: pre-cutting at least two principal sections; positioning said principal sections in adjacent relation; bending marginal portions of each section upwardly toward the reverse side and positioning them in end to end abutting relation such that the fur surfaces are in face-to-face contact; trimming the adjacent edges of said principal sections to form a substantially straight line; positioning an elongated strip section having at least one finished surface on one side of the seam formed by said principal sections, with the finished surface facing upwardly away from the synthetic or dressed or tanned surface; simultaneously securing the marginal edge portions of the pre-cut sections and the elongated strip section together to form a triplewelt seam; and folding said elongated strip section over said seam; and securing the remaining marginal longitudinal free end portion of said elongated strip section to the other side of said seam such that said joined sections have on one side a continuous fur surface and on the other side a predominantly synthetic or natural dressed or tanned surface having a protective and decorative seam covered with a said elongated cover strip.
The invention also pertains to a method of producing a reversible garment according to the description herein comprising: cutting natural fur skins having on one side a fur surface and on the reverse side a dressed or tanned animal skin surface into sections having predetermined configurations; Positioning two of said section in end to end adjacent relation; bending marginal edge portions of the skins upwardly toward the reverse side and positioning them together with the fur surfaces in face-to-face contact; positioning an elongated cover strip section having on one side a natural fur surface and on the reverse side a dressed or tanned animal skin along said joinder portion with the fur surface facing outwardly away from said dressed or tanned surface; simultaneously stitching the principal sections and the elongated sections together to form a triple-welt seam; folding the elongated fur section over the seam thus formed; hand stitching the remaining elongated edge portion of the elongated trim strip to the other side of the seam; and similarly securing sufficient additional fur sections to produce a reversible fur coat.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Preferred embodiments of the invention are described hereinbelow with reference to the drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a front view of the garment of the present invention with the predominantly smooth dressed or tanned side showing;
FIG. 2 is a rear view of the garment shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a front view of the reverse or fur side of the garment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2;
FIG. 4 is a view of a partially completed triple-welt seam used to assemble the sections of the garment of the present invention according to the method disclosed herein;
FIG. 5 is a view taken along sections 5-5 of the garment shown in FIG. 1 illustrating the completed triplewelt seam;
FIG. 6 is a view taken along sections 66 of FIG. 1 illustrating the edge trim portion positioned along the lower marginal portion of the garment.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawings there is shown in FIG. 1 a reversible ladys coat constructed according to the method of the present invention. It should be understood that the ladys coat which is illustrated is merely exemplary, and that other garments such as mens gar- .ments are contemplated within the scope of the invention.
The coat is comprised of sections 12 of natural animal fur skins having on one side a surface of soft animal fur 14 and on the reverse side thereof a finished dressed or tanned animal skin 16 as is shown in FIG. 4. The sections of fur are secured together to form a seam as is shown in FIGS. 4 and 5.
Referring to FIG. 4, fur sections 12, which are precut to a suitable size and configuration, are secured together along marginal portions 18 which are bent upwardly with the fur surface 14 of each section being placed in face-to-face contacting relation as shown. According to the method of producing the coat, the edge of the upwardly bent marginal portions are trimmed to form a substantially straight line. An elongated seam cover section 20 having on one side a surface of natural animal fur 22 and on the reverse side a dressed or tanned animal skin 24, is positioned along one side of the marginal bent portions 18 of the sections 12. A series of stitches 16 secured the three members together to form a triple-welt seam. The elongated cover section 20 is then folded over the triple-welt seam and secured to the other side by hand sewn stitches 28 to complete the seam in a manner which seals and conceals the seam while simultaneously protecting it to prevent penetration of water, cold air, etc.
The resultant attachment provides a substantially continuous and relatively inconspicuous connection on the fur side of the reversible coat 10 as shown in FIG. 3. The reverse side is comprised predominantly of the relatively smooth dressed or tanned animal skin as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The elongated sections 20 have an exposed surface of natural animal fur 22 which, in addition to concealing and sealing the seams formed by the animal skins, also provide an aesthetically pleasing contrast with the dressed or tanned surface.
In the preferred embodiment the dressed or tanned leather side of fur sections which form the coat are treated with an agent which renders the surface waterrepellent. Such agents are applied to the surface either by direct application or by spraying prior to assembling the sections 12. An example of an agent which is contemplated is SCOTCHGARD, a product which is marketed by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co., St. Paul, Minn. Thus, it can be seen that the resulting coat is substantially weather-proof on-both sides, while it retains substantial water-repellent qualities on the dressed or tanned side. The lining and padding used in garments of the prior art as well as the special seaming tapes which were provided therewith are thus unnecessary since both sides are finished so as to make it reversible. The coat is of lightweight construction thereby providing advantages over the coats of the prior art while avoiding the disadvantages of coats produced in accordance therewith.
In the preferred embodiments, sections of natural animal skins are provided and are pre-cut into similarly configured rectangular or square configurations as is shown in the drawings. However, it can be seen that a garment can be constructed according to the invention using pre-cut sections of animal skins in any of a number of alternate geometric configurations such as triangles and the like (not shown). In addition, several configurations which are dissimilar but complementary,
may be joined in the manner disclosed to form a completed garment. For example, several circular sections may be provided to form a portion of the garment while connecting sections having complementary shapes may be provided between the circular sections to complete the portion of the garment.
There is also provided a reversible collar which is formed of natural animal skins identical to those used to form the pre-cut sections. The collar is configured and positioned such that when the fur side of the coat is facing outwardly, the upper portion of the collar 26 has an outwardly facing surface 25 of fur while the outwardlyfacing surface 29 of the lapel portion 28 is a dressed or tanned surface with an outwardly facing fur trim 32. When the coat is reversed as is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, and the relatively smooth, predominantly dressed or tanned surface is exposed, the collar 26 is also reversed and the upper portion thereof has a dressed or tanned surface 32 facing outwardly while the outwardly acing surfaces 34 of the lapel portion 28 is comprised of natural animal fur. In addition, the upper portion 32 of the collar 26 also has a marginal fur portion 36 while the lower marginal portion of the entire coat has fur on both sides as is shown at 38 in FIG. 6.
In the preferred embodiment such fur skins as mink, sable, nutria, and all types of lamb skins, such as persian lamb, are contemplated because of their warmth retention, their resistance to shedding and their favorable resistance to cold weather penetration. However, any fur skins which are suitable for use in such fur garments and having reverse sides which can be finished are contemplated.
It should be emphasized that the invention is not limited to garments which are comprised of natural animal skins alone. For example, the sections 12 shown in the drawings may conveniently be comprised of a first relatively smooth portion 18 such as a plastic material which is treated to resemble a natural leather or animal skin. The reverse portion may be comprised of a surface having a plurality of upstanding synthetic pile members having sufficient density to simulate a natural animal fur. The sections 12 may be thus formed by securing the simulated leather portions to the underside of the simulated fur portion in any known manner such as by bonding, stitching, etc. These sections are then assembled to form the reversible garment of the present invention according to the method thus disclosed. ln'this embodiment as in the preferred embodiment the elongated seam cover strips are preferably the same material as the sections which are assembled to form the garment. However, it is only necessary that the seam cover sections have at least one finished surface which can be utilized to effectively cover and seal the seams as disclosed herein, while effectively providing a contrast or blend with the natural or synthetic animal skin surface. For example, in the preferred embodiments the seam cover sections have outer surfaces of fur which effectively seal and conceal the welt seams on the dressed or tanned surface while also providing a blend and aesthetic contast with the dressed or tanned surface. It is also possible to construct the garment with other seam cover sections which have alternate finished outer surfaces other than fur such as a dressed or tanned surface.
The method of producing the fur garment is considered to be part of the present invention and may be practical according to the above disclosure.
