2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in ladies underwear and has particular reference to a panty garment.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of seam in such a garment at points where the body portion thereof is connected to a crotch portion, so that the stitching at these junctures does not come into contact with the body of the wearer and cause any irritation therein.
A further object is to provide a simple and efficient construction of seam which can be very readily produced without the use of any particular additional apparatus that is not well known and in use.
In brief and general terms, it is to be noted that the crotch of a panty garment in this case is made of two layers of material which are joined at the front and the rear to the body portion of the garment. If the ordinary construction of seam is employed, then the stitches connecting these portions would contact the body of the wearer and might possibly cause irritation or chafing. Therefore, at each end of the crotch member composed of two layers of material, I dispose the two layers on opposite sides of the edge of the body portion to which they are to be joined in a laterally abutting relation with the ends of the three layers lying in the same plane. I then sew them together with an over-lock stitch which produces a whipped seam. After producing this scam, I then fold the two crotch layers over the stitching to cover the seam, thus protecting the body of the wearer from the contact with the more or less rough line stitches. This sort of seam is produced at each end of the crotch element and can be readily effected by the manipulation of the parts. Generally speaking, the seam is stitched to the parts in an inside out relation and after the seam is formed, the parts are disposed in a reverse relation thereby effectively covering the stitching.
The preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the drawings, of which- Fig. 1 is an elevation of the completed garment;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the whipped seam before the parts are reversely folded;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, showing the whipped seam and the parts in their folded covering position; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the garment showing at the left, the seam and the parts after the seam has been formed and the parts are folded into ultimate position and at the right,
the seam just after it has been formed and before the parts are folded into their ultimate position.
Referring now merely to the specific form of the invention illustrated, it is applied in this particular form to a panty garment 19 having a crotch element formed of two layers of material I I and 12, which are adapted to be connected at each end to the body portion of the garment.
In Figure 2, the body portion IE] is shown disposed intermediate to two layers II and. [2 of the crotch portion in a laterally abutting relation and with their end edges in alignment. Any suitable means is then employed to sew these three layers together by a lock stitch formation l3 thus producing a whipped seam. After this seam is produced, the crotch layers ii and 12 are then folded down to the position shown in Figure 3, in which position they effectively cover the line of stitching and prevent any .irritation of the body of the wearer. By suitable manipulation of the garment, as shown in Figure 4, a similar seam is formed on the other end of the crotch and after the seam is formed, the parts are reversed.
This invention is clear, simple, elficient, extremely easy to produce and. effectively protects the body of the wearer from any unnecessary chafing or irritation.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A panty garment comprising a body portion and a crotch portion composed of two layers of material, said crotch layers connected at opposite ends to the body portion by means of a whipped seam, the layers of the crotch portion after the seam is formed bent over to cover the stitching on each side of the seam.
2. A panty garment which comprises a body portion, a two layer crotch portion connected to the body portion on each end thereof by means of an over-locked stitch to form a whipped scam, the layers of the crotch portion bent reversely over the opposite sides of the seam to cover the stitching thereof.
