This invention relates to a bed jacket, and has for its principal object the provision of a, garment which may be used for reading in bed. When reading in bed, the arms, shoulders, and upper portion of the body project above the bed covers and become chilled and also expose the reader to curious eyes. The principal object of this invention is to provide a garment which may be quickly slipped on so as to conceal and protect the usually exposed portions of the reader and present an attractive appearance.

Another object of the invention is to so build the garment that it can be formed from a single piece of cloth, without buttons, snaps, clasps, or other rigid fasteners which would contribute to the discomfort of the user.

Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efliciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.

In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.

In the drawing:

Fig. 1 illustrates a single piece of material from which the improved bed garment is made;

Fig. 2 illustrates the garment ready for use; :and

Fig. 3 is a front view, illustrating the garment :as it would appear on a wearer.

In the drawing hem folds are indicated by dashes separated by single dots and other folds by dashes separated by two dots. The cut edges are indicated by zig-zag pinking cuts and the lines of stitching by dotted lines.

The improved garment consists of a single piece of cloth cut to the pattern illustrated in Fig. 1,

to form a relatively wide mid-portion outlined by nally on a main central fold line H. After folding along the line H, the inclined edges ID are stitched together throughout their entire lengths, :as shown at A in Fig. 2.

Fig. 2 illustrates the completed garment laid out flat. When in place on the wearer, the garment assumes the form of Fig. 3, with the fold line I! extending across the chest, and with the stitched portions A extending along the back of the sleeve portions of the garment.

The fullness created by the bias cuts [0 falls in billowy folds below the arms, allowing full freedom of movement and providing excess material for enclosing the chest of the wearer.

If the bed clothes are drawn up beneath the armpits, it will be noted that the body of the wearer is completely protected. It will also be noted that in the absence of any fastening devices, the garment can be quickly and easily put on or removed without leaving the bed and no discomfort will be created by hard rigid projections.

While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:

1. A blank for forming a garment to be worn while reading in bed comprising: a single elongated piece of fabric having a similar contour on each side of its longitudinal center 1ine, and terminating at its extremities in cuff portions having less width than the mid-portion of said piece, said cuff portions being joined to the mid-portion by sleeve portions each of which tapers from the width of the mid-portion to the width of the cuff portions, the two edges of each tapered sleeve portion being adapted to be stitched together to form sleeves, and a neck opening in said middle portion positioned to one side of said center line and a neck entrance slot extending from the adjacent side of said mid-portion to said neck opening.

2. A bed jacket comprising: a single elongated piece of cloth folded downwardly upon itself to form a jacket with a front fold and a rear fold joined by a straight folded upper edge with aligned lower edges, the two lower edges at the mid-portion of said jacket being parallel to the folded upper edge thereof and being unattached to each other, the two lower edges at each side of said mid-portion extending upwardly on an incline toward said folded edge to form two tapered sleeve portions, the two lower edges of each tapered sleeve portion being stitched together throughout their lengths, there being a REFERENCES CITED neck Q at the Huddle of the back fold of The following references are of record in the the m1d-port1on and an open neck entrance slot file of this patent:
