Cummerbunds have long been a popular accessory garment. They are particularly popular as part of mens formal dress costumes but they are also worn by women and children to add a decorative touch at the waist. Cummerbunds which have been available heretofore have consisted of a front central portion with extension pieces attached to each side. After some wear the extension pieces tend to separate from the front central portion at the stitching which secures them together. There exists, therefore, a weak point at each side of the cummerbund.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a cummerbund for use at the waist of a person which will be free of the foregoing difficulty.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a cummerbund which may be worn in several different ways.

it is a further object of the present invention to provide a single cummerbund which will fit anyone from a child to a grown man.

It is another object of the invention to provide an efficient garment accessory which will give comfort and be convenient to apply to and remove from the body of the wearer.

Another object is to provide a cummerbund which need not be removed from the wearer when trousers or a skirt is lowered or removed since the cummerbund may be folded over and attached to the opposite portion of the cummerbund or garment to which the cummerbund is attached.

A further object is to provide a cummerbund which will automatically readjust to its original smooth position upon rising from a seated position in which latter position the cummerbund would be folded.

Additional objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings, in which:

FIG. 1 is a plan view of the cummerbund of the present invention, partially broken away to show detail;

FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view along the line 22 in FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is an enlarged view of a clip;

FIG. 4 is a partial plan view of an alternate attachment means;

FIG. 5 is an enlarged view of a hook;

FIGS. 6, 7, and 8 are plan views of other shapes in which the material used in the cummerbund may be cut; and

FIG. 9 is a plan view of an end portion of the cummerbund showing the rotatable clip.

Referring now to the drawings, a cummerbund which is indicated generally at 1% comprises two lengths of

material

12 and 14. The two materifl lengths =12 and 14 are of the same shape and size and have been attached together in layers. As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 the

layers

12 and 14 may be sewn together along their perimeter with the seam allowance turned inwardly. Between the two lengths of

material

12 and 14 is a lining 16. Each layer of

material

12 and 14, as well as the lining 1-6, is made of a single piece of material which imparts great strength to the garment. The unitary construction provides a cummerbund that is particularly strong through "ice the horizontal medial line which receives the greatest stress.

The fabric of the material layers 12. and 14 and the lining 16 may be cut on the straight, or all these pieces may be cut on the bias for more extensibility, or may be varied on the straight and bias on one garment.

At each end of the cummerbund the material tapers to form an end portion 18. The end portion is stitched at its inner edge only so that the layers are free of each other in this area. A clip 24 is attached to one layer of the material so that it is positioned between the

layers

12 and 14 of the end portion 18. It is preferable that that part of the lining 16 which extends into the end portion 18 be included with the material layer which holds the clip 20. The clips 20, while remaining unseen, are arranged to grasp the clothes beneath, thereby to secure the cummerbund to the person. With this arrangement only one size cummerbund need be made since the clips can be attached at any place toward the front or back depending on the girth of the individual wearing it.

A great deal of versatility may be incorporated in the cummerbund. Each length of material 12 and \14 may be made of a different fabric and color so that the garment is reversible. Also, each long edge of the material layers may have a different outline, as shown in F168. 1, 6, 7, and 8, so that the cummerbund may be turned top for bottom. The clips 26 are secured to the material, as by :a grommet 21, so that they may be rotated to permit the cummerbund to be worn in any desired manner. in this way, the clips may be turned at right angles to the cummerbund for convenient grasping of the waistband portion of trousers or a skirt. The dotted line in FIG. 9 indicates the position of the clip when rotated in preparation for wearing the cummerbund with the bottom edge turned uppermost.

At the center, top and bottom, of the cummerbund are small hooks 22 which are placed between the layers of the cummerbund. They are secured by the seam stitching across the single shaft 23 of each hook. This arrangement permits the hooks 22 to be rotated so as to face the body when the garment is reversed. The hooks 22 are provided to attach the cummerbund to the trousers and shirt (or blouse and skirt, if used by a woman) and hold the cummerbund at the center of the body. Similar books 24 may be attached to the end portions 18, as in FIG. 4-, where they may be used in addition to, or in place of, the clips 20 to secure the cummerbund to the clothes at the sides of the body.

The present invention thus provides an accessory garment which is an improvement over the old cummerbund in having added strength. In addition, this novel cummor bund may be rapidly changed to be worn in four different ways for great versatility.

While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the invention, it will be understood that the in.- vention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.

What is claimed is:

1. A cummerbund for use at the waist of a person, said cummerbund comprising a llength of material and clips at each end of said material to secure the cummerbund to the clothes of said person, said clips being rotat-able with respect to the cummerbund to permit their being turned at angles to the length of the cummerbund with the free edge of the clips extending toward one or the other long edge of the cummerbund so that the cummerbund may be positioned with either long edge at the top while the clips are securable to the same portion of the clothes of the person and whereby said cummerbund may be worn by persons of all sizes.

2. A cummerbund for use at the waist of a person,

said cummerbund comprising two lengths of material attached together in layered relation, each end of said cummerbund having an end portion extending from the extremity of said cummerbund inwardly to a line spaced from said extremity, the material layers in each of said end portions being stitched together only along said line whereby the said layers of material are free of each other from said line to the extremity, a clip attached between the two layers of each of said end portions whereby the clip is concealed from view by the layers of material, said clip being adapted to secure the cummerbund to the clothes of said person, said clips being rotatable with respect to the cummerbund to permit their being turned at angles to the length of the cummerbund with the free edge of the clips extending toward one or the other long edge of the cummerbund so that the cummerbund may be positioned with either long edge atlthe top while the clips are securable to the same portion of the clothes of the person.

3. A cummerbund for use at the waist of a person, said cummerbund comprising two lengths of material attached together in layered relation, said layered material having different outlines at each of its long edges, each end of said cummerbund having an end portion extending from the extremity of said cummerbund inwardly to a line spaced from said extremity, the material layers in each of said end portions being stitched together only along said line whereby the said layers of material are free of each other from said line to the extremity, a clip attached between the two layers of each of said end portions whereby the clip is concealed from view by the layers of material, said clip being adapted to secure the cummerbund to the clothes of said person, said clips being rotatable with respect to the cummerbund to permit their being turned at angles to the length of the cummerbund with the free edge of the clips extending toward one or the other long edge of the cummerbund so that the cummerbund may be positioned with either long edge at the top while the clips are securable to the same portion of the clothes of the person.

4. A cummerbund as in claim 3 in which there are provided hooks rotatably secured to the center of each longitudinal edge between said lengths of layered material, whereby the cummerbund may be attached to the clothes at the center of the body in any of the four possible positions of said cummerbund.

Claims

1. A CUMMERBUND FOR USE AT THE WAIST OF A PERSON, SAID CUMMERBUND COMPRISING A LENGTH OF MATERIAL AND CLIPS AT EACH END OF SAID MATERIAL TO SECURE THE CUMMERBUND TO THE CLOTHES OF SAID PERSON, SAID CLIPS BEING ROTATABLE WITH RESPECT TO THE CUMMERBUND TO PERMIT THEIR BEING TURNED AT ANGLES TO THE LENGTH OF THE CUMMERBUND WITH THE FREE EDGE OF THE CLIPS EXTENDING TOWARD ONE OR THE OTHER LONG EDGE OF THE CUMMERBUND SO THAT THE CUMMERBUND MAY BE POSITIONED WITH EITHER LONG EDGE AT THE TOP WHILE THE CLIPS ARE SECURABLE TO THE SAME PORTION OF THE CLOTHES OF THE PERSON AND WHEREBY SAID CUMMERBUND MAY BE WORN BY PERSONS OF ALL SIZES.
