DRESS 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed Sept. 11, 1952 V INVENTOR. #ARRY LANG BY @MMM BW 1477055513 Patented Jan. 26, 1954 UNITED STATES "PATENT OFFICE mmss H Harry Lang, St. Paul, Minn.
Application September 11, 1952, Serial'No. 309,050
; 1 Claim.
V l The invention herein presents a new and improved dre's's, of character especially suitable to be worn by children while at play consisting of several pieces of material providing a skirt and a bib of the dress, a band member, partially elastic material as' disclosed'fencirding an upper"extremity of the sk rt where it is joiriecltothe bib, and adjustable shoulder straps connected between upper extremities of separate pieces o'fthe "pibat the front of'the dress and spaced parts of said upper extremity'ofthe'skirt at the center of the rear of said dress.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a dress incorporating features and characteristics of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view, taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of the dress; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 3.
A skirt of the dress is provided by six separate longitudinally extending pieces of material, two of which pieces, denoted II and [2, respectively, are at the front of said dress, and four of which pieces, represented l3, l4, I5 and I6, respectively, are at the rear of the dress. The adjacent marginal edges of the front longi tudinally extending pieces H and I2 are connected at the center of the front of the dress by a vertical seam H, the adjacent marginal edges of the rear longitudinally extending pieces 14 and I5 are connected at the center of the rear of said dress by a vertical seam [8, the adjacent marginal edges of the longitudinally extending pieces I 3 and I4 are connected by a vertical seam l9 midway between the vertical seam i8 and a vertical seam 20 connecting the adjacent marginal edges of the longitudinally extending pieces l2 and I3, and the adjacent marginal edges of the longitudinally extending pieces [5 and I8 are connected by a vertical seam 2| midway between the vertical seam l8 and a vertical seam 22 connecting the adjacent marginal edges of the longitudinally extending pieces H and Hi. The vertical seams 20 and 22 are at the center of the opposite sides of the dress, equally spaced from the front and rear thereof, and each of the longitudinally extending pieces I I, I2, l3, I4, I 5, it of material is of divergent configuration in downward direction.
A bib.23 of the dress is provided by two longitudinally extending pieces, denoted 24 and 25,
respectively, of material; one of which isaaliried with the longitudinally extending piece I I of the skirt and-the-otherof which is alined with the longitudinally extending piece 12 of said skirt,
, A band member 26; including elastic material 21 at the rear thereof in the disclosure as made, encircles-the upper marginal edge of .theskirt mat the location where thebib .pieces'24iandi'25 andsaid upper marginal skirt edgemeet and are "joined; The band memberj26 and the. lower marginal edge portions of the bibpieces24. and'f25 el'eistitched; as at"28', in substantiallypiiatwis'e fashion to upper marginal edge portions of the longitudinally extending pieces H and I2 along substantially the full widths of said bib pieces and said pieces H and I2, and the elastic material 21 of the band member is stitched, as at 29, to upper marginal edge portions of the longitudinally extending pieces l3, l4, l5, [6 in such manner that said last mentioned upper marginal edge portions are puckered or shirred, as at 30, at locations disposed rearwardly of the dress.
Adjacent marginal edges of the bib pieces 24 and 25, as well as adjacent marginal edges of upper portions of the longitudinally extending pieces H and I2 with which said bib pieces are joined, are detachably connected by a vertical zipper 3| at the center of the front of the dress. The vertical zipper 3| extends downwardly from the upper end of the line of meeting between the bib pieces 24 and 25 to position below the band member 26 and considerably above the lower edge of the skirt I0, and the lower end of said vertical zipper terminates at the upper end of the vertical seam IT.
The bib pieces 24 and 25 taper upwardly from their line of meeting at the vertical zipper 3|. Adjustable shoulder straps 32 are connected, as at 33, between upper extremities of the bib pieces 24 and 25 at the front of the dress and spaced parts 34 of the upper extremities of the longitudinally extending pieces I4 and 15 at opposite sides of and equally spaced from the vertical seam l8 at the center of the rear of said dress. Stated otherwise, the spaced parts 34 to which the adjustable shoulder straps 32 are secured are situated along the length of the stitching 29. A cross piece 35 extends between the adjustable shoulder straps 32 at the rear of the dress at about the elevation of upper portions of the tapered parts of the bib pieces 24 and 25.
The dress is loose fitting, and the construction and arrangement, including the band. member 26 and its elastic material part 21, and the manner in which said elastic material part is assembled with the longitudinally extending pieces I 3, l4, l5, l6, gives the desired shape to the garment. The take-up at and adjacent to the waist line, rearwardly of the dress and. at opposite sides of the vertical seam l8, and the tapering configuration of the longitudinally extending pieces ll, l2, l3, l4, l5, 16 leave the front of said dress without folds and impart shape to the skirt rendering the dress pleasing in appearance.
What is claimed is:
A dress comprising a skirt consisting of a pair of downwardly diverging, longitudinally extending pieces at the front of the dress and four downwardly diverging, longitudinally extending pieces at the rear of said dress, vertical seams interconnecting all of said downwardly diverging, longitudinally extending pieces of said skirt, there being a first vertical seam at the center of the front of the skirt, a second vertical seam at the center of the rear of saidskirt, third and fourth vertical seams midway between said first and second vertical seams at opposite sides of the skirt and fifth and sixth vertical seams miclway between the second vertical seam and said third and fourth vertical seams, respectively, a bib consisting of a pair of longitudinally extending pieces constituted as upper continuations of said longitudinally extending pieces at the front of said dress, each of said longitudinally extending pieces of said bib including a first longitudinal side edge having an upper concave portion and a lower straight portion at the inner side of the bib and a second longitudinal side edge of curvilinear configuration at the outer side of said bib extending substantially to the upper extremities of the longitudinally extending pieces, of said skirt, said straight lower portions of the longitudinally extending pieces of said bib and upper central portions of said longitudinally extending pieces of the skirt at the front of the dress being detachably connected to form a front closure extending downwardly from the top of said garment, and shoulder straps connected between upper extremities of said longitudinally extending pieces of said bib at the front of said dress and a part of the dress at the center of the rear thereof at the elevation of upper extremities of the longitudinally extending pieces of said skirt.
