2 Claims.
This invention relates to garments and deals more particularly with dual or composite garments, their assembly and association, and the structure thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a garment comprising two separable parts each Wearable as a complete garment, and capable, when assembled, of being reversed whereby it may be worn with either of the garment parts outside.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for efficiently separably uniting the garment parts, a feature of the invention residing in the novel structure of the separable uniting means.
A further object is to provide means whereby the arm movements of the wearer of the composite garment may be eased against undue binding which may be caused by the plural layers of material at the arm holes of the garment.
These objects are realized and the invention, accordingly, consists in the features of construction as combined and arranged in the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing,
The following specification, which is based on the drawing, further sets forth the objects, features and advantages of the invention.
In the drawing- Fig. 1 is a front view of a dual or composite garment contemplated in this invention, one side of said garment being shown open to disclose the construction thereof.
Fig. 2 is a greatly enlarged cross-sectional view as taken on the plane of the line 22 of Fig, L.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail sectional view showing the arm-hole structure, the garment parts being reversed from that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail view illustrating one means for easing the binding at the armholes.
In that embodiment of the invention which is illustrated, the composite garment comprises a main garment member ID and an auxiliary garment member II. The former member, in the usual manner, may be provided with sleeves [2, pockets l3, buttons l4, and button-holes Hi. The latter member also may be provided with sleeves I6, pockets l1, buttons l8, and button-holes l9.
Each of the garment members is made up as a complete garment, in the above manner, capable of being separately worn. Thus, if made of similar materials, the garment parts may be differently colored to give greater utility to the garment. However, it is preferred to make the garment parts of difierent materials. For instance,
the garment member I0 may be made of a woolen material suitable for overcoatings and the garment member ll of a lighter material such as gabardine, suitable for raincoats, etc.
It will be noted that the garment members are assembled in inside-to-inside relation whereby the outer portions of said members are exposed either from the outside or inside of the composite garment. Hence, reversal of the composite garment may be quickly and readily achieved without resort to manipulation of the means uniting the garment members. The button holes l5 and is are arranged to register so that either set of buttons M- or IB may pass through said registered button holes in either condition of the composite garment.
Slide fastener means are provided for separably uniting the garment members Ill and I i, said means preferably starting at one front corner, extending along the periphery of the garment, and terminating at the other front corner of the garment but not including the bottom edge thereof.
A preferred structure of the means for separably uniting the garment members, is best shown in Fig. 2 wherein the front 20 of the main garment member ID is folded at its peripheral edge at 2! and united by a seam 22 to the folded edge 23 of a strip of material 24 which forms one part of the inside facing of the garment member Ill. The remainder of the main garment facing comprises a relatively wide strip of material 25 which is preferably piped at 25 and has underlapping engagement with the strip 24. A fastener tape 21 is arranged between the strip 24 and the facing strip 25 and a line of stitching 28 is employed to unite these parts. The tape 21 carries the fastener elements 29.
The front 30 of the auxiliary garment member H is folded at its peripheral edge at 3| and united by a seam 32 to the folded edge 33 of a strip 34 which is somewhat wider than the strip 24 and forms one part of the facing of the garment II. The remainder of the auxiliary garment facing comprises a strip 35 which is preferably edge folded at 36 and has overlapping engagement with the strip 34. This latter portion of the strip 35 is preferably edge folded at 31 and a fastener tape 38 is arranged between the strip 34 and the edge fold 31 of the facing strip 35. A line of stitching 39 is used to unite these parts. The tape 38 carries fastener element having separable association with the fastener elements 29 as can be well understood.
When the composite garment is worn as arranged in Fig. l with the auxiliary lighter garment member ll inside, the structure is such that the arm-holes of the outer main garment member HI, are larger than the arm-holes of the auxiliary garment member. There is, therefore, no undue binding on the wearer. However, when the composite garment is reversed, as shown in Fig. 3, with the lighter auxiliary garment member l l outside, the smaller arm-hole of the latter garment causes a binding on the wearer by forcing against the larger arm-hole of the main garment member III. To obviate this condition, it is preferred to provide a section of slide fastener such as shown at M along the bottom of the arm-hole of the auxiliary garment member. When this fastener is opened to permit separation of the fastener elements 42 and 43, the mentioned binding is obviated. This fastener may be so positioned as to normally be unseen.
From the above it may be seen that a garment realizing the purposes of the invention has been provided in one form of embodiment, it being understood that the invention, as defined by the following claims, contemplates modifications and alternative structures incorporating the principles of the invention as set forth herein.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A composite garment comprising a main garment member and an auxiliary garment mem ber each wearable as a separate garment, each garment member being provided with cooperative fastener elements for uniting the members together, the peripheral edge of the main garment member being folded and united by a seam to the folded edge of a strip of material which forms part of the inside facing of said main garment member, a relatively wide strip of material constituting a third portion and remainder of the main garment facing and extending from the edge of the first folded portion along the inside face of the main gaarment member, a fastener tape positioned between the last-named facing strip and the narrow folded facing strip, with the fastener elements directed inwardly from the edge of the garment, and a line of stitching uniting the main garment member, the remainder facing strip, the fastener tape, and the narrow folded facing strip, whereby space is provided for the fastener elements to avoid bulging of the garment.
2. A composite garment comprising a main garment member and an auxiliary garment member each Wearable as a separate garment, each garment member being provided with cooperative fastener elements for uniting the members together, the peripheral edge of the main garment member being folded and united by a seam to the folded edge of a strip of material which forms part of the inside facing of said main garment member, a relatively wide strip of material constituting a third portion and remainder of the main garment facing and extending from the edge of the first folded portion along the inside face of the main garment member, a fastener tape positioned between the last-named facing strip and the narrow folded facing strip, with the fastener elements directed inwardly from the edge of the garment, and a line of stitching uniting the main garment member, the remainder facing strip, the fastener tape. and the narrow folded facing strip, whereby space is provided for the fastener elements to avoid bulging of the garment, an auxiliary garment member being provided with an inside facing formed of two strips of material and a fastener-element-bearing tape secured between said two strips of material with the fastener elements directed outwardly toward the edge of the auxiliary garment and a row of stitchin passing through the two strips of material, the fastener-element-bearing tape, and the fabric of the auxiliary garment.
