Y Application May 4, 1939, 'serial Nb. 271,647
1 claim. (c1. 2-253) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a pocket.
The invention has for an object the construction of a combination pocket having a conven- 5' tional pocket portion and a secret pocket portion constructed in a manner to form a particularly sturdy and strong construction.
More specifically, the invention purposes the arrangement of certain binding, strips attached upon the front edge of the vertical slitted opening in the Wall of a garment, representing the pocket opening, and associating the materials of the pocket to these binding strips in a fashion to obtain the strong construction previously reerred to.
' Still further the invention proposes a novel arrangement of an outer Sheet of pocket material and an inner sheet connected with each other and with the binding strips previously mentioned in a novel manner.
Still further the invention contemplates turning in certain of the edges of the material from which the pocket is constructed to reinforce these parts.
For further comprehension of the invention,
andof the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure- Fig. 1 is a front elevational View of a garment constructed with a pocket according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view looking in the direction of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4. is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view similar to a portion of Fig. 2 but illustrating a modification.
The pocket, according to this invention, is used in combination with the wall Illa, lllb of a garment having a vertical slitted opening I|`repre senting the pocket opening. The wall portions II)a and IllD are secured together by flange portions Iiiaa and IUbb thereof sewed together with stitches I2. At the pocket opening II the flange |Ilam extends upwards along the front edge of the pocket and between the binding material I2.
Another binding strip I3 is secured along the front edge of the pocket opening II by a line of stitchesv I4. vThis binding strip I3 has a flange portion I3aa opposed to the ange portion Iiiee. The stitches I4 secure the junction of these flanges together. The binding strip I2 has one of its edges |2aa bent into a flange which has its junction also engaged by the line of stitches I4. The binding material I2 is bent along a center line so that it has a layer I2a disposed to the rear 10 of theoflange Illia.'
An outer sheet of material I5 is disposed to the rearof the garment wall Illa, I|lb and is bent along a vertical line I5a to form a front layer l5 and a rear layer I5c with a pocket area I6 be-r 15 tween theselayers'. The front layer I5c has its edge |50? engaged to the front of the flange Ibb.
A lineof stitches I'I secures these overlapping areas together. Expressed differently, the front layer |.5c is attached along the rear edge of the 20 pocket opening The rear layer I5b is secured alongthe front edge of theopening I I, specifically, 'to the binding material I2. The side edge of Ythe rearlayer I5b is turned inwards to form a comparatively broad flange Vportion Ibb which 25 is located to the rear of one face of the binding I2. A line of stitches |8'is engaged through the bent edges of the binding material I2 and the rear layer 15b.
An inner sheet of material I9 is arranged with- 30 in fthe pocketl I6 and isl bent along a vertical line I98L to form a front layer I9b and a rear layer I9c with an inner pocket 20 between these layers. One side edge of the sheet of material I9 is attached to the front layer. More specically, it 35 is the front layer I9c which is secured to the front layer I5c by a line of stitches 2 I. At this securing line the front layer I9c has an inturned flange I9@ to reinforce the edge thereof. The rear layer I 9b of the inner sheet I9 terminates at a point 40 spaced from the binding I3 to form a slit, opening or space 22.
A slide control hook fastener 23 is mounted across this space 22. This fastener comprises one line of hook stringers 23a attached by lines 45 of stitches 24 and 25 to the edge of the rear layer I9". The hook fastener has a complementary line of stringers 23b attached by a line of stitches 26 with the binding strip I3 and with an area of the rear layer |51. The Stringer 23b has its 50 edge portion 23m turned inwards forming a flange through which the line of stitches 26 passes. The Stringer 23a has a similar flange 23.
Each Stringer of this hook fastener has a layer of cloth 23 continued from the Stringer tape 55 layer ISC.
across the outer edges of the hook elements of the fastener. Stitches 23" engage the hook elements of the fastener to hold the portion 23 in position. Thus the layer 23 normally covers the edges of the hook fasteners. This particular type of slide controlled hook fastener is known at the present time and further explanation thereof is thought not necessary. The slide for the hook fastener is indicated in Fig. 1 and is referred to by reference numeral 28.
A horizontal line of stitches 29 secures the top edges of the several layers of the inner and outer sheets of material I9 and I5 together with garment wall portion IIJb for closing the tops of the pockets. Another line of stitches 29 secures the lower edges `of the layers ofthe sheets I and I9 together to close the pockets at their bottom edges. These lower edges of v the layers are formed with inturned fianges 30 for reinforcement purposes (see Figs. 3 and 4) A reinforcement strip of material 3I is ymounted on the inner face of the front layer l5c of the outer sheet I5 and is at a position opposed to the hook fasteners 23. This reinforcement sheet has its edge portions 3l turned inwards. 'I'he line of stitches I'I previously referred to secures the front edge of the strip 3| to the adjacent edge portions of the wall portion lub and the front A line of stitches 33 secures the rear edge of the reinforcement strip 3| to an intermediate area of the front layer I5.
The operation of the device is as follows:
With the hook fastener 23 in a closed position one may insert his hand through the slit II .o reach the pocket 20. In the event it is desired to reach the secret pocket I6, the control slide 28 of the hook fastener must be moved downwards to open the space 22. The hand may now be inserted through this space 22 into the pocket I6.
The dominating feature of the pocket construction resides in the arrangement of the binding strips I2 and I3 in association with the parts which are connected therewith. Another feature of the invention resides in the specific arrangement of the layers of material which form the inner and outer pockets.
In Fig. 5 a modified form 0f the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that the rear line of Stringer material 23a of the hook fastener, at spaced areas, is provided with snap fastener elements 34 cooperative with complementary snap fastener elements 35 mounted along the outer face of the layer |91. This arrangement permits the stringer 23a to be folded rearwards as indicated by the dot and dash lines in Fig. 5, and in this position to have the snap fasteners 34 and 35 engaged with each other. 'Ihis will hold the Stringer 23a in a rearward position so that when one engages his hand through the opening or space 22, or into inch apart.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described, a pocket construction having a mouth side opening requiring that the hand be moved forwards when entering the pocket, a pair of adjacent slide fastener stringers having their outer edges attached to the material at the sides of said opening, slide fastener elements mounted on the intermediate portion of each of said stringers so that as said hand enters said vpocket one line of elements will be disposed adjacent the palm of said hand and the other line of said elements will be disposed adjacent the back of said hand, said stringers having their free edges engaged over the outer face of said elements for hiding the same from view when said elements are engaged and for covering the line of elements disposed adjacent the palm of said hand for preventing the same from coming in direct contact with the palm, and means for holding the Stringer having the line of elements disposed adjacent the back of said hand in a folded forward position for preventing its respective line of elements from engaging the back of said hand.
