Description
. 6, 1955 M. KORNHAUSER GARMENT POCKET Filed Sept. 13, 1954 INVENTOR. MAX KORNHAUSER BY avg/M;
ATTORNEY United States Patent GARMENT POCKET Max Kornhauser, New York, N Y. Application September 13, 1954, Serial No. 455,451
1 Claim. (Cl. 2247) This invention relates to garment pockets and is particularly applicable to trousers, slacks and the like, and is more particularly directed to a secret pocket located inside the garment so that the opening of same is not visible.
 An object of the invention is to provide a pocket of the class described adapted for use with trousers or slacks, hereinafter generally termed pants, which may be attached to the waistband and append therefrom; or, the pocket may have its opening in the face of the waistband itself.
 Other objects and improvements will be evident from the following specification wherein by way of illustration is shown improved forms of the invention. It will be understood, however, that these illustrations are merely descriptive and not limitative of the invention which is as defined by the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
 Figure l is a plan view of the garment having the improved pocket attached to the waistband with the opening to the pocket below the band;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line  22, Figure 1;
 Figure 3 is a plan view of the garment having the pocket secured therein with the opening of the pocket extending through the waistband of the garment; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 44, Figure 3.
 Referring to Figure 1, the numeral denotes the inner waistband of the pants and 11 indicates the body of the pants which depends from the waistband in the usual manner.
 The pocket 12 is made up in the usual manner and has an upwardly extending folded-over portion indicated at 13 which, in the case of the pockets to be permanently secured in position, is stitched to the waistband as indicated at 14. This stitching in some cases extends through the body of the pants so as to appear on the outside thereof as indicated at 15. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the folded-over portion 13 of the front wall of the pocket 12 is only secured to the lower edge portion of the waistband 10 at the inner side thereof, the waistband along the line of its attachment to the pocket from its sewed upper edge to the lower edge thereof being entirely free from the body portion of the garment.
 The pocket has an opening at the top provided with any suitable closure, such as buttons, snap fasteners, or zippers as indicated at 16.
 It will be seen from the foregoing arrangement that the pocket 12 hangs dependently from the waistband. It may be tacked at any suitable points, such as 17, 18 and 19, to the body 11, but in most cases it is not necessary to do this.
 Instead of the pocket being stitched to the waistband, as previously described, snap fasteners can be used at 14 to secure the top of the pocket to the waistband. This makes the pocket quickly detachable and enables the pocket to be sold as a separate item of merchandise from the pants. It is easy to add it to pants now in use.
 An alternate form of construction is shown in Figures 3 and 4. Here the waistband 20 has a slot or opening 21 formed therein and the pocket 22 is stitched to the waistband at 23, 24, the pocket being provided with a suitable closure member, such as the zipper 25.
 2,725,573 Patented Dec. 6, 1955 It will be seen that the construction shownin Figure 3 differs from that shown in Figure 1 in that the opening for the pocket extends through the face of the waistband.
 With either of the pockets shown in Figures 1 or 3, the opening into the pocket may be in the form of a long, narrow slit having a turned-over edge. The pocket so made is drawn tight on the waistband and stitched or otherwise secured thereto, and as no Zipper or other closures are used, the slit forming the opening of the pocket is practically unnoticeable, even in the event the wearer of a garment with such a pocket is carefully searched, which often occurs in a hold-up, or the like.
 While only a single pocket has been shown in the illustrations, it will be obvious that more than one of these secret pockets can be used in the same pair of pants. In fact, with womens slacks, this type of secret pocket may be used instead of any other pockets opening outwardly, thereby leaving the lines of the slacks free from openings and trim so that they will set neatly to the figure. Being located in the waistband, these pockets are easily accessible.
What is claimed is:
 A garment having a body portion, a waistband disposed completely at the inner side of the body portion and sewed at its upper longitudinal edge to the upper edge thereof, said body portion having its upper edge extending to the top of said waistband, a substantially rectangular shaped pocket comprising opposing front and rear walls secured by stitching along their opposing side edges, the front wall of the pocket having an upper end portion extending upwardly beyond the upper edge of the back wall of the pocket, said upper end portion of the front wall being folded inwardly back and downwardly upon itself, and said folded portion having its upper end portion secured to the lower edge portion of said waist band at the inner side thereof, the lower free edge of said folded portion extending downwardly from the lower edge of said waistband in vertically spaced relation with the upper horizontal edge of the back Wall of the pocket and forming therewith a horizontal opening for the pocket extending completely across the same below the lower edge of the waistband at the inner side of the body portion of the garment, said waistband along the line of its attachment to said pocket from its sewed upper edge to the lower edge thereof being entirely free from the body portion of the garment to permit free rearward movement of this part of said Waistband and the pocket inwardly from the body portion to facilitate ready access to the pocket and withdrawal of the contents when the Wearer of the garment loosens the same at the waist thereof, and a zipper closure for said opening attached to said folded upper end portion of the front wall of the pocket and to the upper edge portion of the back wall of the pocket and extending completely across the same, said upper inwardly folded end portion of the front wall of the pocket being disposed between the body portion of the garment and the lower marginal edge portion of said waistband, the pocket normally depending downwardly from the lower marginal part of the waistband in forwardly offset relation thereto with the'front wall of the pocket disposed alongside the inner face of the body portion of the garment.
