This invention relates to garments having detachable pockets and, while not confined to trousers, is principally for use in connection with trousers.

One important object of the invention is to pro vide a garment having novel means for the reeeption of a detachable pocket and a novel form of pocket for use therewith.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of this type wherein the pocket opening may be positioned vertically, horizontally, or at an angle to the vertical.

A further object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of this character whereby a pocket may be readily attached to the garment to hang. inside thereof without disturbing the contentsyof such pocket.

A still further object of the invention is to ma vide a novel garment with a detachable pocket and attaching means for securing the pocket to thegarment whereby the garment is prevented from wear by the pocket attaching means.

. Yet another object of the invention is to provide a novel combination of garment wherein loss of articles by accidental insertion between the pocket and the garment at the pocket opening will be obviated.

Again an object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement at the pocket opening of such character that loss of articles from the pocket through the opening will be minimized. With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of an arrangement of garment and detachable pocket having a novel construction of parts and combination of details hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the arr-- companying drawings and particularly claimed.

In the illustration of two of the forms of the invention, the detachable pockets have been shown in connection with a pair of trousers. However the trousers here shown are to be understood as merely typical of any form or garment arranged to cooperate with the detachable pockets and securing means here set forth. For instance, the arrangement of pocket shown in Figure 1 will apply equally Well to a skirt, over-'- coat or other garment to be used with pockets to be entered from a side. Again, the arrangements of Figure 2 may be used for the breast pockets.

In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, there is disclosed a garment W in the form of a pair of trousers. At each side of thetrousers there is provided the usual substantially vertical slit or opening it which is reinforced on the inside of the garment by a reinforcing strip;

12 having a similar opening. The side edges of these openings are turned back to provide hem i3; and these hems are stitched together by stitching I4. This turning back of the side edges is apt to permit fraying at the ends of the openings arid, in order to prevent such fra'ying, the openings may have their end edges protected by whipstitching or buttonhole stitching. Adjacent the side edges of the openings metal eyelets I 5 are passed through the fabric of the garment and the strip l2 in spaced relation along both sidesof the opening.

Mounted adjacent the free edges of the pocket front and back are male snapbutton parts 26 and adjacent the free edges of the

23 and 24 are female snapbutton parts 21. The spacing of these parts is such that the parts 26 will pass through the eyelets i and be received in the parts 21, thus securing the opening of the pocket closely to the opening in the garment in the manner shown in Figure 2 and at the left of Figure 1, both

The arrangement for the hip pocket or other pocket having a substantially horizontal opening at its top is shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6, and is quite similar to that previously described. In these views, the trousers ID are shown from the rear and are provided with the usual pair of openings 28 at the hips. Above each opening the longitudinal edge is turned inward and upward of the garment to form a hem 29. A reinforcing strip 30 has its lower edge turned forwardly and upwardly to form a hem 3| and the two

29 and 3| are brought together and secured by stitching 32. The bottom edge of the opening is left raw but a reinforcing strip 33 has one edge positioned evenly along said bottom edge of the opening and, at first extends down on the outside of the garment until it is secured by stitching 34. The depending portion of the strip 33 is then turned or folded back or upwardly passed inwardly through the opening 28 to wrap over the raw edges of the opening and strip 33 beyond or below the upward fold thereof and stitching 34, being there secured by stitching 35. Through the lower part of the strip 33 and the material of the garment extend laterally spaced tubular rivets or eyelets 36 which assist in holding the strip 33 in place.

The detachable pocket for this arrangement is indicated generally at 31. This pocket is formed to provide a front Wall 38, this being the part nearest the garment fabric below the opening 28, and a rear wall 39. The front wall terminates at its top in a horizontal edge and is secured to the rear wall alon its sides and bottom by stitching 40. These walls may be made of a single piece of fabric cut and folded to bring parts of the side edges together as at 4|. The rear wall extends above the front wall in trapezoidal form and has the side edges of this extension folded and stitched to provide hems 42. The inner face of the rear wall carries a reinforcing strip 43 which has its lower edge held to the wall by stitching 44. The upper side edges of this strip are received in the hems 42 and secured in place by the stitching of these hems. The front wall 38 is provided on the inside with a reinforcing strip 45 which has its lower edge portion secured by stitching 46. This strip 45 extends above the top edge of the wall 38 and is turned outwardly so that it may pass through the openin 28 and is then folded downwardly to have its free edge portion depend on the outside of the garment to form a flap below opening 28. Male snapbutton parts 41 are secured through the front wall 38 and strip 4; 45 and are spaced to pass through the eyelets 36. The free edge portion of the strip 45 is provided with a stitched hem 48 and adjacent the hem carries female snapbutton parts 49 in which the parts 41 engage when the pocket is attached.

Safety pins 58 may be used if desired to hold upper portions of the pockets from displacement.

What is claimed as new is:

1. The combination with a garment having a slit for a pocket openin formed therein, reinforcing means extending along the longitudinal edges of the slit within the garment and stitched to the garment, a pocket having an access opening and having a wall extending along the inner face of the garment, a reinforcing strip stitched to the inner face of the said wall and extending through the said access opening, said reinforcing strip being extended through said slit to lie against the outer face of the garment fabric, and snapbutton parts having male and female members secured respectively to the reinforced portion of the pocket and the free edge portion of the pocket reinforcement.

2. The combination with a garment having a slit for a pocket opening formed therein, reinforcing means extending along the longitudinal edges of the slit within the garment and stitched to the garment, a pocket having an access opening and having a wall extending along the inner face of the garment, a reinforcing strip stitched to the inner face of the said wall and extending through the said access opening, said reinforcing strip being extended through said slit to lieagainst the outer face of the garment fabric, snapbutton parts having male and female members secured respectively to the reinforced portion of the pocket and the free edge portion of the pocket reinforcement, and eyelets carried by one of the reinforced edges of the slit for passage of the male snapbutton parts therethrough.

The combination with a garment having a slit for a pocket opening formed therein, reinforcing means extending along the longitudinal edges of the slit within the garment and stitched to the garment, a pocket having an access opening and having a wall extending along the inner face of the garment, a reinforcing strip stitched to the inner face of the said wall and extending through the said access opening, said reinforcing strip bein extended through said slit to lie against the outer face of the garment fabric', said pocket having a second wall parallel to the first mentioned wall, a second reinforcing strip attached to the inner face of the second wall and extending through said access opening parallel to the first strip, said second strip being adapted to extend through said slit and lie against the outer face of the garment, and releasable means connecting the edge portions of each of said walls at the access opening and the free edge portions of the reinforcements.

The combination with a garment having a slit for a pocket opening formed therein, reinforcing means extending along the longitudinal edges of the slit within the garment and stitched to the garment, a pocket having an access openin and having a wall extending along the inner face of the garment, a reinforcing strip stitched to the inner face of the said wall and extending through the said access opening, said reinforcing strip being extended through said slit to lie against the outer face of the garment fabric, said pocket having a second wall parallel to the first mentioned wall, a second reinforcing strip attached to the inner face of the second wall and extending through said access opening parallel to the first strip, said second strip being adapted to extend through said slit and lie against the outer face of the garment, and releasable means connecting the edge portions of each of said walls at the access opening and the free edge portions of the reinforcements, said releasable means comprising male snapbutton parts carried by the edge portions of each wall at the access opening and female snapbutton parts carried by the free edge portions of said pocket wall reinforcements.

5. The combination with a garment having a slit for a pocket opening formed therein, reinforcing means extending along the longitudinal edges of the slit within the garment and stitched to the garment, a pocket having an access opening and having a wall extending along the inner face of the garment, a reinforcing strip stitched to the inner face of the said wall and extending through the said access opening, said reinforcing strip extending through said slit and lying against the outer face of the garment fabric, said pocket havin a second wall parallel to the first mentioned wall, a second reinforcing strip attached to the inner face of the second wall and extending through said access openin parallel to the first strip, said second strip being adapted to extend through said slit and lie against the outer face of the garment, releasable means connecting the edge portions of each of said walls at the acing outwardly through said access opening, said reinforcing strip extending through said slit and lying against the outer face of the garment material beyond the slit, and releasable means detaohably connecting the pocket, through said wall and reinforcing strip, and the garment along said slit and its reinforcin means, to the free edge portion of said strip.

7. The combination with a garment having a slit for a pocket opening formed therein, a reinforcing strip extending along both longitudinal edges of the slit within the garment and stitched to the garment, a pocket having an access opening along one edge-thereof and having a wall extending along the inner face of the garment and terminating adjacent the slit, a reinforcing strip stitched to the inner face of said pocket wall beyond the slit and extending outwardly through said access opening and slit and lying against the cess opening and the free edge portions of the reinforcements, said releasable means comprising male snapbutton parts carried by the edge portions of each wall at the access opening and fe-. male snapbutton parts carried by the free edge portions of said pocket wall reinforcements, and eyelets carried by the reinforced edges of the slit for passage of the male snapbutton parts therethrough.

6. The combination with a garment having a 4 slit for a pocket opening formed therein, rein forcing means extending along the longitudinal edges of the slit within the garment and fastened outer face of the garment beyond the slit, and detachable fasteners connecting the pocket, through said second reinforcing strip and said wall, through said garment and first reinforcing strip adjacent thereto at one side of the slit, to the free end portion of the second strip at the inside thereof.
