POCKET.
Application led May 5,
T 0 all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT DnsILETs, a ycitizen of the United States, residing at manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a removable or transferablepocket for street car conductors, policemen and the like.
My primary object is the production of a pocket which can beremovably received in a as the nature of the invention is better Vrunderstood, reference is to be had to the -drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.
In the drawings f Figure 1 is an elevation of the. improve-y ment arranged on the coat of a uniform.
Figure 2 is a sectlonal view approximatelyA on the line 2-2 of Figurel.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the detachable or removable pocket.
Figure 4 is a sectional view approximately on the line44 of'FigureB. y Y
Figure 5 is a plan view of one of the fastening elements which may be employed.
Figure 6 is an elevation ofA a removable and transferable pocket for policemen.
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line 7-7 of Figure 6. l
Fi re 8 is a fragmentary front elevation of the leather protector or mouth for the pocket.
Figure 9 is a sectional view illustrating a slight modification, in which a secret pocket is provided.
Figure 10 is a front elevation of one of the leather strips providing a portion of the mouth of the pocket.
1924. seriai No. 711.272.'
Figure 11 is a similar view of the second leather strip employed.
yFigure 12 is a sectional view on the line 12-12 of Figure 10.
In Figure v1, the numeral 1y designates a portion of a coat for street car conductors or the like,*and 2 a pocket in the coat.
The mouth ofthe pocket 2 ofthe uniform is soon soiled and the pocket torn by the frequent passage of the lhand of a conductor therein. IWith my improvementthe mouth of the pocket andthe pocket itself is amply protected, as is the uniform. The mouth of my improvement is made up of two pieces or strips of leather 3 and 4 respectively. Each of the strips has on its inner edgey a centrally arranged extension,'5 and 6, respectively. VVhen the edges 4of the members 3 and 4 are brought against each other the eX- tensions 5 and 6 are in lapping relation and are extended at a downward curvature from the said strips 3 'and 4'. The ends of the strips 3 and 4 are cut angularly, as indicated by the numerals 7 and 8. The angle ends 7 of the strips 3`overlie the ends 8 of the strip 4 and these overlying ends are stitched together. Stitched to the inner yfaces of the strip-s 3 and 4 there are the ends and edges of fabric` reinforcing strips 9, which is centrally slitted for the passage'of the extensions 5 and 6 therethrough. Embedded between the strips of the reinforcing fabric ythere are heads 10 of eye members 11. These eye members pass through suitable openings provided inthe coat 1, the said openings being arranged around the mouth of the pocket 2. The eyes are engaged` by spring clips 12,
' as clearlyjdisclosed in Figure 5 of the drawings, and in this manner the leather reinforcing mouth of the removable pocket is'detachably securedto the coat.` T he detachable pocket proper, indicated by the numeral 13 is stitched, as atf14', to the lower edges of the leather extending strips 5 and 6. The confronting edges of the strip extensions 5 and 6 are also stitched together. The removable pocket 13 is of a size to be snugly received in the uniform pocket 2 and may be firmly attached thereto in a manner as above described or readily removable therefrom by simply drawing the clips 12 out of the eyes 11.
In VFigures 6 and 7 I have illustrated a slight modification, the leather reinforcing strips.being,.however, substantially similarly constructed. These strips, indicated by the numerals 15 and 16 have their projecting ends Apreferably stitched around the mouth ofthe poclret'of'a policemans trousers 17. The angular lapping ends of the strips 15 and 16 are stitched together'. The lower strip 16, which in this instance enters the mouth of the pocket has sewed thereon a button 19 to be received through abuttonhole 20 in the trousers 17. In this manner it Will'be noted that two, pockets or compartments are provided, the main pocket 21 of thev trousers, lin which the lremovable. pocket is received, being accessible when the button is released, access to the auxiliary pocket being had throughthe confronting ends ofI the leather reinforcingstrips 15 and A16. The Vleather reinforcing strips are illustrated in detail in lFigures -10 and .11, While in fFigure 12 the edges of the said strips are disclosed.
,To remove the auxiliary Ipocket from'the uniform l7'the stitching 22 which. attaches the leather `mouth of the auxiliary pocket to the uniform is ripped, although the yleather reinforcngmouth maybe attached by eyes and clipsor hooks, as previously described. Y f
l'In Figure 91 have illust-rated anv auxiliary pocket in which the leather mouth or reinforcement comprises strips 28and 241:.sub- Vstantially similar to those previously described. ,Thelower strip-24 is folded upon itself for the-reception of a reinforcingele- 1nent'50,-which is stitched-,between the said folds. .This striplcarriesa-button 25 to be received through abutton V'hole in the coat or rtrousers ofthe uniform. 'Thestrip l23 `has an vinner fabric yfacing 26 -in which is embedded'the heads 27 carrying eyes 28 designed to. be engagedby hooks or clips simi- 'lar tothe clips 12 for lholding the same on the uniform. To the outer face of thestrip 24 `there isstitched :the face of a pocket 29. Tothe edges ofthe inner face lof ythe pocket 29 there .is stitched axfabric sheet30. VThe strip divides the pocket 20 into two compartments 31 and 82 respectively.V The inner compartment B2 4iis not accessible through the vmouth provided by the -leather strips 23 .and '24, ,and therefore lis especially adapted for lthe reception of'valuables, asaccess ycannot-.be obtained thereto until the' l garment is removed from vthe person of the wearer. While Ihave referred to the ystrips as constructed of leather it-is tobe understood that any other like suitable material may be employed.
It is believed lthat the foregoing-description, when taken in connect-ion v-with the drawings Y'will vfully -set forth lthe -construction of the improvement and its advantages.
Having described the invention, I claim V1. Asupplemental, removable and transferable pocket for garments having a mouth portion formed of leather strips,f.each having lapping ends which ,are stitched. together and having.theircontacting edges centrally formed with extensions which project downwardlyand rearwardly .from the strips, a
y.pocket stitched tothe said extensions `reinforcingrfabric stitched tothe leather strips and havingacentralslitted portion to rek c-eive theextensions Vvand the pocket therethrough, and ,fastening means, comprising headed `elements having ftheir ,headed yeportions pocketed Vbetween .the reinforcing fabric and the vleather strips and having. shank portions which project through the reinforcing fabric.
r2. A supplementary, removable and transferable pocket for garments including soft leather strips having widened ends which .are arranged'in `lapping, relation and Which yare `stitched together, said strips having their inner andconfronting edges formed with extensions `between the ends Vof lthe strips, and the said extensionsbeing directed rearwardly; and downwardly Withrespect to -`the strips, a `pocket having ,its sides connected respectively :tofthe extensions, said pocket having .onV its innerfface ,a ,fabric sheet which is stitched Yto the edges and,to the bottom thereof and whichvprovidesvan auxiliary pocket, a reinforcinglfabric secured tothe inner face ofthe leatherstrips and which is centrally slitted longitudinallyto f permit. of thestrip extensionspassing therethrough, means for fastening, the .auxiliary f pocket around the mouth of the pocket of a garment, said means comprising headed ele- .ments which areembedded between therein-
