Sept. 26, 1944. M. SOPHlER MONEY POUCH Filed June 24, 1942 Patented Sept. 26, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT orrlcs MONEY POUCH Max Sophier, Chicago, Ill.
Application June 24, 1942, Serial No. 448,257
4 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved pocket structure for garments, the principal object being to provide a money pouch structure which is relatively simple and inexpensive from a production standpoint and one which will not disfigure the garment or require any unusual expenditure or departure from approved tailoring practice.
Viewed from another aspect, it is an object of the invention to provide a concealed money pouch in combination with a garment to prevent picking of the money pouch when the garment is in normal position on the wearer thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide on the inner wall of the waistband of a garment a relatively narrow pouch sufficiently wide and long to receive a bill such as a conventional paper money certificate folded longitudinally about four times upon itself and providing such pouch with an opening and a suitable closure means therefor.
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain details of construction which will become more apparent in view of the following description when read in the light of the drawing, in which:
Fig. is a fragmentary perspective view of a garment showing my new money pouch associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional detail of my invention seen along line 2-2 in Fig. 1 and at an enlarged scale with respect thereto;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view of the pocket structure shown in Fig. 1 illustrating the insertion of a folded bill thereinto;
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of a modified form of the structure shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective View, partly in section, of the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of another modification of the structure shown in Figs, 1, 2 and 3.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, my improved pocket structure II] is formed as a part of a garment II which may be in the nature of a trousers or skirt having the conventional waistband l2. The waistband I2 is lined with a strip of light-weight material l3 which is sewed along its upper wall M to the inner wall l5 of the wastband of the garment The lower end of the strip I3 is stitched as at Hi to the main garment fabric H at the point substantially above the lower marginal edge of the strip I3 so as to provide a depending flap IT.
The present invention constitutes an improvement over former objectionable structures in that it provides a concealed pocket which is accessible to the user only to his knowledge while wearing the garment, and cannot be tampered with without detection by the wearer. The invention contemplates the provision of an improved pocket structure in the waistband of a garment which pocket structure will be less bulky, of greater utility and of a sturdy construction which will retain the form of the waistband while providing a concealed receptacle. To this end I provide an elongated strip 20 of pliable material of a length suitable for holding an object of predetermined length, and of a width suflicient to span the inner exposure of the lining strip l3. The strip 20 has formed therein an elongated opening 2| and this opening is adapted to be closed by a closure means 22 such as a separable fastener means 22 for bridging the opening 2| and comprising two comp- anion strips 23 and 24 of a zipper structure having the usual closing yoke 25 with a tab 25 carried thereby for manually sliding the yoke 25 relative to the companion strips 23-24 for closing the same. The strips 23 and 24 are stitched as at 21 to the inner face of the elongated strip 20 and are adapted to coact with the latter, when closed, to provide a smooth surface which will lie flat against the body of the wearer.
It is apparent that the closure means 22 for the opening 2| may be in the form of a flap suspended downwardly from the upper edge of the opening 2| and fastened over the lower edge thereof by suitable snap fastener means well known in the art.
The elongated opening 2| is shown disposed centrally with respect to the long axis of the elongated strip 20, thus producing a symmetrical pattern with uniform border walls surrounding the elongated opening 2|. The strip 20 is secured to the inner wall l5 upon the lining strip 3| by stitching 28, the lower edge L of the elongated strip 20 being secured to the depending flap l1. The arrangement is such that the elongated strip 20 cooperates with the lining strip I3 to provide a pocket or receptacle 29 having an opening 2| therefor. As thus arranged it will be noted that the opening 2| of the pocket 29 faces the inside of the garment l| so that in order to gain access to the pocket the garment must either be removed or the waistband l2 turned outwardly from above.
As shown in Fig. 3 the pocket 29 is adapted to receivea bill B or paper certificate, such as silver certificates issued by the United States Government as legal tender. The pocket 29 pro- Vided by the elongated strip 28 is of a Width substantially equal to a paper money certificate, like bill B, folded longitudinally about four times upon itself and is sufiiciently long so as to permit such bill B to lie therein fully stretched out.
The invention contemplates the provision of a concealed packet for receiving folding paper money. It is therefore apparent that the particular bill B shown is merely explanatory and that the receptacle 29 may be formed to receive a bill folded but once as shown in Fig. or as desired.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 all parts identical to the preferred form are indicated by like reference numerals. The modification is in the position of the elongated opening 3! which is placed closely adjacent the upper marginal edge U of the elongated strip 29. The companion strips 23-24 of the fastener means 22 are associated with the opening 31 the same as in the preferred form with the exception that the upper strip 23 is stitched to the elongated strip 26 simultaneously with the stitching operation involving stitches 28 which secures the elongated strip. 23 to the inner wall l5 of the waistband l2.
In this modified arrangement a deeper pocket 2c is provided, as is illustrated in Fig. 5, so that the major portion of the substance, such as bills 13, carried thereby may gravitate substantially below the opening 2i. In this form, should the closure means 252 be left open, contents of the pocket 29 would be less likely to work out of the latter and become lost.
In Fig. 6 which is another variation of Fig. l, the elongated strip 29 is omitted and an elongated opening 4! formed in the lining strip 13 itself. The closure means 22 is applied to this opening ll in th same manner as explained regarding the opening 2d.
have utilized certain portions of the garment itself as part of the pocket structure, thus eliminating additional material usually required for back and side walls of such pockets.
While I have illustrated and described. the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.- I, therefore, do not wish interlocking strips secured to and spaced from each other substantially equal to the length of a money bill, said lining strip having a slit formed therein between said stitch ing lines to permit access to said receptacle, and closure means for said slit to prevent access to said receptacle.
2. In a money pouch structure for garments having a waistband including a lining strip sewed to the inner wall thereof, the combination of an elongated strip of equal to a money bill folded longitudinally about four times upon itself, said elongated strip having an elongated opening formed therein and a separable fastening means in the form of a zipper secured to the walls of said opening whereby to provide a closure means for the latter.
3. In a money pouch structure for trousers having a waistband, anelongated strip of pliable material secured to the inner wall of said waistband to cooperate with the latter to provide a. receptacle of a width suflicient to receive a money bill folded longitudinally upon itself several times, an elongated opening formed along the long axis of said elongated strip, a slide fastener secured to said elongated strip at the edges of said opening and adapted to close the latter.
a. In a money pouch structure for a garment having a waistband, an elongated strip of pliable material secured to the inner wall of said waist band by stitching and cooperating with the latter to provide a pouch of a width equivalent to a money bill folded longitudinally four times upon itself, said, elongated strip having a longitudinal opening formed adjacent its upper edge, and a slide fastener means having companion said elongated strip along the edges of said longitudinal opening with the upper one of said interlocking strips secured as aforesaid, by said stitching securing the upper edge of said elongated strip to the inner wall of said waistband.
MAX SOPHIER.
