ATENT BENJAMIN F. "GASSAWAY, OF DUBLIN, TEXAS. I
OVERCOAT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters PatentNo. 519,670, dated May 8, 1894.
Application filediMay 22, 1893- Serial No. 475,051. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. GASSA- WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dublin, in the county of Erath and State of Texas, haveinvented a new and useful Overcoat, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in overcoats; the objects in view being to pro-' duce a coat so constructed as to keep dry the legs of the wearer; which is adapted to shed water from horsemen; and which is.of the usual external appearance and will not impede or interfere with the locomotion of the wearer.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:Figure 1 is a perspective view of an overcoat, the same being applied to the person. Fig. 2 is a detail of the coat.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both the figures of the drawings.
1 designates an overcoat having the usual external appearance and constructed in the usual manner. The inner side of the coat has located at each side of its center the rectangular leggin 2, whoseupper edge from near its vertical center to a point near the outer edge is sewed or stitched as at 3 to the coat, and from the outer end of this line of stitching to the bottom of the leggin asecond line of stitching is formed. A line of stitches 3 may also extend from the inner end of the line of stitches 3 to the bottom of the blank. The second line of stitching forms a fly 5, and the same is provided upon that surface adjacent to the coat with buttons 6, the fly being shown in Fig. 2 as partially laid back upon the leggin blank. The disconnected portion of the 'leggin blank forms a flap 7 that may be folded over the fly, and is provided along its upper and side edges with button-holes 8. These button-holes 8 may engage the buttons of the fly or they may engagebuttons 9 that are located upon the coat under the flap 7. When the leggin blanks are open and out of use, it will beseen that,
they do not interfere in any way with the walking of the wearer, nor do they afiect the fit or hanging of the garment. Now, by loosening the flap 7 and folding it about the legs of the wearer and buttoning the free edge of the flap to the buttons of the flywhich latter is also brought forward, it will be seen that a pair of leggins are produced, which are practically independent of the coat a nd which their vocation or pursuits to be constantly in the saddle, and to take the place of the ordinary rubber coats and mackintoshes which furnish but insufficient protection. When an ordinary mackintosh or rubber coat is used,
the legs of the rider are left bare and unprov tected.
I have provided by the means hereinbefore described a garment which supplies this deficiency, the leggins covering the legs of the wearer down to his feet.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantagesof this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- .1. An overcoat provided on the inner side of each of its tail-portions with rectangular leggin-blanks secured between their edges thereto and depending therefrom, each le gin-blank being provided at its outer edge witha fly havingfastenings and at its inner edge with a series of fastenings for engaging the fastenings on the fly or fastenings applied to the inner face of the coat-tail, substantially as specified.
2. An overcoat provided on'the inner side of each of its tail-portions with a rectangular too leggin-blank secured by vertical and trans- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as verse stitches between its opposite edges my ownI have hereto affixed my signature 1n thereto forming an outer fly 5 and inner flap the presence of two witnesses.
7, the latter having button-holes and buttons BENJAMIN F. GASSAWAY. 5 located in rear of the flap upon the inner side Witnesses:
of the tall-portion and upon the rear side of WV. 0. CAMPBELL,
the fly, substantially as specified. J. B. KEAHEY.
