OVERGAITER.

This invention has for its object to construct an overgaiter which will perfectly fit the instep and waist portions of a shoe, and retain its position when being worn.

Ordinary overgaiters known to me contain seams from the top of the g'aiter to the lower edge of the vamp parallel with the length of the shoe, and in practice they fail to cling closely to the shoe or foot. v

v In accordance with this invention the vamp is preferably cut in a single piece and pro- Vided with curved edges, to which are united quarter-pieces by any usual seam, as in ordinary vamping, the quarter-pieces having attached at theirlower edges straps which pass beneath the shank of the shoe to fasten the over-gaiter to the shoe, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 represents in side elevation an overgaiter' embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a plan View of the vamp detached.

The quarter-piece A, cut of any suitable size and preferably from cloth, is provided with buttons 2, or other suitable fastenings, by means of which it is connected with a button-piece, B. The quarter-piece A and button-piece B are united to a quarter-piece, B of a size corresponding with the quarter-piece A and button-piece B combined, by a heelseam, a, and a front seam, b.

The vamp 0, preferably formed in one piece, as shown in plan view, Fig. 2, and having edges6 6, which are more or less curved, as desired, according to the formation of the foot, is united to the connected quarter-piece B and the button-piece B by a seam, c, and when suitably formed (see Fig. 1) the seam 0 extends diagonally from the top of the instep portion to the shank.

nary construction, passes beneath the shank thereof and serves to secure the overgaiter to the boot or shoe.

The overgaiter is preferably lined and stayed in any usual manner, and'bound or provided with a double stitched edge, as shown in Fig. l.

By the employment of a vamp provided with the curved edges herein described, and preferably formed in one piece, the draft is brought both from the toe portion of the vamp and from the top of the instep to the strap d, which latter, upon being drawn taut, fits the overgaiter snugly about the top portion of the boot or shoe and covers theinstep and waist portions, tending to draw the toe portion of the vamp snugly down upon the boot or shoe, insuring a perfect fit and obviating all tendency of itslower edge becoming turned or rolled up.

I am aware that moccasins, &c., have been provided witha vamp formed from a single piece; but 1 am not aware than an overgaiter has ever been provided with a vamp formed from a single piece and cut from a patternhaving curved edges, as herein described,whereby the draft is brought from both the toe and instep portions to a common center, at which point the fastening is applied.

It is obvious that any other suitable fastening may be substituted for the strap and buckle but such I prefer to use for cheapness and durability. It is also obvious that the vamp 0 may be made from two or more pieces without departing from my invention 5 but by employing a single piece, dust, &c., cannot accummulate at the seam tending to deface it, and a much neater appearance is rendered, and fitting as it does, snugly about the shoe appears to form a part thereof.

I claim- 1.
