Description

I. HALL.
Boots.
Patented May 27,1873.
AM, mamar/:omwille co, Ndmumsls mams) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC HALL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND DAMON, THOMAS & LEWIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 139,385, dated May 27, 1873 application filed April 16, 1873.
To `all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ISAAC HALL, of Boston, inthe county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Boots 5 and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this speciiication, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
\ United States Letters Patent, No. 55,799,
` datedJune 26, 1866, were granted to John f strengthen this seam and at the same time act as a guard to facilitate the application of the boot to the foot, and its removal therefrom, I make the boot with an inside guard and brace that extends down by the center of the counter and between the outer and inner sole, so as to be fastened by the fastenings that unite said soles, and also up above the counter, being fastened at its opposite edges both to the counter and the leg portion of the boot, imparting strength to the counter-seam and protection to the heel of the wearer of the boot. In ahalf-boot, having above the counter an i inwardly-folding leg-piece and a strap or other device to fasten the parts together, I use this extension-piece as the protector and brace, stitching its opposite sides above the counter l to the opposite edges of the leg and foot-piece,
l and its opposite edges inside of the counter to and through the counter, its bottom edge eX- tending between and being fastened to the soles.
`My invention consists in combining, with the boot made with a single leg and foot piece united to a counter-piece, substantially as shown in said Adams7 patent, a protector extending by the center of the counter to and between the inner and outer sole, (united to them by the fastenings that connect them together,) and also extending across the counterseam, being united both to the counter and leg pieces by opposite lines or rows of stitches, all the parts being thus united by such protector-piece. The invention also consists in making this protector, (extending to and between the inner and outer soles, and united to them and to the counter at its opposite edges,) the folding extension that connects the edges of the leg-piece, and folds within the boot when the parts are fastened by the strap.
The drawing represents a boot and a halfboot embodying my improvement, the boots being shown in rear view. l
a denotes the outer sole, Ac, the footand legpiece, and d the counter. The piece o being cut on the Adams plan, and the counter fastened to it by the stitches e, i`n the usual manner. I stitch to the counter the protectorpiece f, the stitches g extending from the bottom of the counter at both edges of the piece f upward beyond the counter, said stitches forming the medium of connection to the leg and upper piece7 as seen at Fig. 2; or being stitched to said piece at each side of the cen` ter-seam h, as seen at Fig. 1.
The upper being thus formed with the piece f attached, the upper is lasted to the inner sole, and in lasting the bottom edge of the piece f is lasted over with the bottom edge of the counter, and then the counter, the edge of the strip f, and the inner sole and outer sole, are all united by the ordinary fastenings that connect the inner and outer soles. In the halfboct the piece f, above the counter, forms the extension to be turned in when the strap 'i is buckled.
By this construction this kind of boot is very much improved and is made easier to wear and more enduring in its connections, the employment or extension of the piece f, from the soles to which it is firmly united to the leg-piece, to which it is also firmly united, relieving the seam from all strain in drawing the boot upon or from the foot.`
I claim- Y 1. In combination with the boot having a foot and 1eg piece, c, and a counter-piece, d, and made as the inwardly-foldngap, to be cut and united substantially as shown, the used in connection with the strap z', or equivaprotector f, extending from the soles a a, lent fastening device.
across the seam h, and united to the soles, to Y ISAAC HALL. the counter, and to the leg and foot piece7 Witnesses: substantially a's shown and described. FRANCIS GoULD,
2. The protector-piecef,a.pp1ied as described M. W. FROTHINGHAM.
