IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS OR BOOTEES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,117, dated December .2, 1873 application iled October 23, 1873.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ToBIAs P. MITCHELL, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented'an Improved Boot; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this speciiication, is a description of my invention sut'- icient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.

My invention relates to a new construction of a haliboot having a crimped quarter and a leg-piece, which laces at the front; and the invention consists, primarily, in connecting` the top, or leg, or quarter piece to the foxing or heel piece by extending the bottom of the quarter-piece inside of the foxing or heel piece, except at the front corners, where the quarter meets the tongue-piece ot' the vamp, at which points the qua-rter is slit, and is brought outside of the vamp, being then stitched to the vamp and heel or foxing piece, crossing the seam between the vamp and foxing, (if there be such a seam,) and strengthening` the parts by what is, in eiiect, a stay-piece. The invention also consists in combining with the vamp, quarter, and foxing thus connected, and at each side of the boot, an elastic goring, stitched at one edge to the edge of the vamp-tongue from the angle of the tongue with the quarter, and stitched at the other edge and from such angle to the united edges of the quarter and foxing, and by the same line of stitches that connects such edges, thehgoring being entirely concealed by the front parts of the quarterpieces, which are laced or otherwise connected and drawn together.

The drawing represents a construction e1n bodying my invention.

Figure 1 shows the boot in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a similar view, but with the lacingquarter torn away to show the elastic goring and the tongue piece. Y

c denotes the vamp; b, the heel and foxing piece of the upper; c, the lacing or quarter piece. f denotes the sole, and g the heel. The vamp is cut to the shape seen at Fig. 3, and is crimped to form. The parts a and b may be formed in one piece, or, as shown in the drawing, in two pieces, meeting at h, and united by the rows of stitches c', The bottom of the quarter-piece c is lapped by the top of the foxing-piece b, (the edge of the piece c extending inside of the piece 1),) and the two edges are united by the row or rows of stitches lc; but where the quarter-piece meets the vamp it is slit, as seen at I, and lthen is laid over the vamp a, as seen at m, the continuation of the same rows ot stitches k uniting this lap or stay piece m to the vamp. This stay-piece secures all the parts firmly together, especially at the angle ofthe tongue-piece and the edge u, and obviates the tendency, which the vamp would otherwise have, to split open at this angle. The crimped tongue-piece extends up, as seen in Fig. 2, and from its angle one edge of the elastic gorepieceo is stitched to the edge of the tongue-piece, the other edge of the triangular gore being stitched to the edge fn by the same row of stitches uniting the edges oi' b and c. This gore draws the tongue piece snugly to the top of the foot, keeping it distended and smooth, while the quarter-pieces c pass over the tongue, and are drawn together by suitable lacing, or by other suitable means, the stay-piece m covering the angle of the gore, and the gore at the angle being united to the stay-piece by the saine stitches uniting the stay-piece and vamp.

l. A boot having a quarter-piece, the edge of which passes inside ot' and is stitched to the foXing-piece b, except at the corner, where the slit Z is made to form an overlapping staypiece, m, stitched to the vamp, substantially as shown and described.

2. In combination with the vamp and quan ter-pieces, connected as described, the geringpieces o, fastened to the tongue and vtoxin g, and secured by the stay-piece m and its stitches, substantially as shown and described.
