WILLIAM LAPVVORTH, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,943, dated May '7, 1889.
Application filed May 10, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LAPWORTH, of Hopedale, county of lrVorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Boots or Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide the upper or top part of a boot or shoe with perforated inelastic pieces or portions, preferably at or about the ankle, for ventilation.
My invention, as herein shown,is embodied in a Congress gaiter, and the perforated pieces are placed one at each side of the top part over the ankle-joint.
Instead of one piece of goring at each side of the top part, as is usual in shoes of this class, I provide two pieces of goring at each side, the perforated pieces being placed between the said pieces of goring. The pieces of goring are united to the front and back pieces of the top part by stitches, in usual manner. The perforations of the ventilated piece or ply are supplied with eyelets, if desired.
Figure 1 shows in side elevation aCongress gaiter provided with a perforated piece embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the perforated piece, and Fig. 3 a modification to bereferred to.
The boot or shoe herein shown comprises the vamp and quarter a, sole 1), heel c, and the top part. The top part is made up of the front piece,'cl, to the sides of which are united the pieces of goring d, and the heel or rear pieces, 6, to the sides of which are united the pieces of goring e. A perforated inelastic piece, f,is placed at each side of the top part and forms a part of it, said piece f being united to the pieces of goring e d, only one such piece being shown. The perforated piece f, located as described, lies directly over the ankle joint. The perforations of the piece f are supplied with eyelets f, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner side of the perforated piece a may be provided with lining of any suitable material. The perforated piece f, located as described, affords ventilation for the shoe over the ankle-joint, and the strain or pressure of the goring falls at each side of the ankle-joint, instead of directly thereon.
Referring to Fig. 3, instead of the lining, stay-strips are attached to the perforated piece, and the edge of the goring is placed between the stay and the perforated piece.
I claim- 1. A boot or shoe having its top portion provided with an inelastic eyeleted piece or ply, f, stitched to an elastic gore-piece, substantially as described.
2. A boot or shoe provided at its top portion with an inelastic eyeleted piece or ply,'f, connected at its side edges to separate gorepieces, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. LAPWORTH.
