UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
GUSTAVUS L. DAVIS, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LADIES SHOES.
Specif cation forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,5 10, dated March 9, 1875; application filed February 5, 187 5.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS L. DAVIS, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ladies Shoes, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the said drawing, Figure 1 denotes a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a top view, of a ladys shoe constructed in accordance with my invention.
My invention has reference to that class of shoes in which the vamp is applied externally to and so as to overlap the quarters, and conceal the front ends thereof; and my invention consists in forming the vamp with lacing or tying lapels, whereby the instep portion of the vamp may be adj nsted with respect to the instep of a person and the underlying portions of the quarters, as may be desirable.
In the said drawing, A denotes the sole, B the heel, O G the quarters, and D the vamp, of the shoe.
In carrying out my invention, I form on each side of the instep portion a. of the vamp a tongue or lapel, b, the same having a frusto-pyramidal or other desirable shape. These lapels, not being separated at their bases from the vamp, form an integral part thereof. Underneath the opening thus made in the vamp, I place a piece of leather (of the same kind as that of which the vamp is composed) of a little greater size than the opening, and stitch such piece around its edges to the vamp. The lapels thus formed and applied are to have holes made near their outer ends to receive the lacing ribbon or string.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-- In a shoe, having its vamp overlapping and covering the front ends of its quarters, the lapels b 11 formed in the vamp, in manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own inventio 1 I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAVUS L. DAVIS. Witnesses:
