To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY S. HALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Shoes and Leggings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a boot or combined shoe and legging especially adapted for use in riding, automobiling and the like.

My object is to provide an article of this character which may be slipped on more easily than the ordinary riding boot and be quickly and easily adjusted, which will be of a simple and eficient construction, comfortable in use and which will hold its shape well without sagging.

Other objects of my invention consist in the details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in the following specification and claimed in the appended claims.

The preferred form of my invention consists essentially in the combination of what may be termed a slipper of the Romeo type with a legging member, which is secured after the foot has been slipped into the slipper portion by folding one flap of the legging around the integral tongue portion of the slipper and the other edge of the legging, the legging being secured about the leg by straps or other securing means.

The construction consists of a crimped vamp lasted to the sole, the legging member also being lasted to the sole and heel. The lower portion of the legging member forms a quarter for the boot, the front edges of the quarter portion being sewed to the outer sides of the vamp, some distance forward of the rear edges of the latter. The front edges of the legging extend upwardly on both sides of the integral tongue portion of the vamp, to which they are not secured above the quarter portions. One edge of the legging member is formed with a forwardly extending flap, as stated, which is bent around the tongue portion of the vamp, and the other edge of the legging member to be secured, as stated, the lower edge of this flap being suitably curved so as not to press upon the foot above the instep. The rear edges of the vamp pass through horizontal slits in the lining of the legging member, the lining being sewed to the inner surface of the vamp below these Specification of Letters Patent.

slits, so that a continuous smooth surface is presented to the foot when the latter is slipped into the article. The vamp is formed of flexible leather and the legging member may be suitably braced or stiffened to prevent the same from sagging.

In order that a clearer understanding of my invention may be had, attention is here by directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating certain embodiments thereof.

In the drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my preferred construction, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lower portion of the same, certain parts being broken away and sectioned, Fig. 3 is a central vertical section corresponding to Fig. 2, Fig. i is a side elevation showing a difierent means of securing the legging member, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing an- 1 other means of securing the legging member.

Referring to the drawings, the vamp 1 havmg an upwardly extending integral tongue portion 2 is lasted to the sole 3. The vamp is of flexible leather shaped to lit the foot of the wearer and preferably is formed of outer and inner layers 1 and 1 sewed together and is vertically crimped as shown at a. The legging member represented as a whole by the reference character 5 is lasted to the sole 3 and heel 6. The legging member is preferably formed of two pieces, 7 and 8, having linings, as shown at 9, members 7 and 8 being secured together at their vertical rear edges at the rear of the boot, these rear edges being covered by the outside rear brace strip 10 and the strip 11 sewed over the edges on the inside. The lower portions of the legging member constitute a quarter 12 for the boot, being suitably countered. The front edges of the quarter are sewed, as shown at 13, to the outer surfaces of the vamp 1.

The forward edges of the legging member extend upwardly on both sides of the tongue portion 2, but are not secured thereto at any point above the top of the lines of sewing 13, this sewing terminating at a point below the ankle-bone. The side piece 8 of the legging member is extended forwardly to form a flap 14: which may be bent forwardly around the front of the tongue portion 2 of the vamp and about the forward edge 15 of the side piece 7 of the legging member, as shown in Fig. 1, to be secured. The flap 14: has its lower edge out outin an upwardly extending curve, as shown at 16, to fit about the orimped forward edge of the vamp, when the legging member is fastened so'as not to press against the foot at this oint, the lower edge of flap let preferably eing curved downwardly, as shown at 17, from the cut out portion 16 to the forward edge of the flap.

The legging member may be fastened by any suitable means, such as the straps 18 on the flap 14, coacting with buckles 19 on the side portion 7, as shown in Fig. 1. Or the flap 14: may be provided with fasteners 20 of the glove-button type, adapted to be pressed into corresponding socket portions, as shown in Fig. 4. As is shown in this figure, the forward edge of flap 14L may be stiffened with a thin and somewhat flexible vertical strip 21 of thin steel or whale-bone or other suitable material. A different fastening means is shown in Fig. 5 to comprise a puttee strap 22, which may be secured at one end to the flap 14: and wound spirally around the legging member, to be secured at its upper end by buckle 23 to the side member 7 of the legging member.

The rear edge 24 of the tongue portion of the vamp extends downwardly a short distance to the rear of the forward edge of the legging member on each side. Each side portion of the vamp extends through a horizontal slit 25 formed in the lining member 9 on each side, these slits extending rearwardly from the upper edges of the lines of sewing 13. The front edge of the lining member is sewed to the inner surface of the vamp as shown at 26, from the forward edge of the slits referred to to the lower edge of the lining. By thus receiving the rear edges of the vamp in pockets formed between the lining and the outer sheets of the legging member a neat construction is made which has the advantage that the rear edges of the vamp are covered over by the lining, so that the foot will not rub against these edges when the boot is put on.

Having described my invention what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. In a combined shoe and legging, the

combination of a sole and heel, a crimped vamp having a tongue portion integral therewith, secured at its lower edges to said sole, a legging member having a quarter portion formed therewith, secured at its lower edge to said sole and heel, said quarter portion being sewed at its front edges to the outside of said vamp, forward of the rear edges of the latter, said legging member having a lining member having slits therein, the rear edges of said vamp extending through said slits and the front lower edges of said lining member being sewed to the inner surface of said vamp, substantially as set forth.

2. In a combined shoe and legging, the combination of a sole, a flexible vamp secured thereto, and a legging member secured to said sole and extending forwardly beyond the rear edges of said vamp, on both sides k thereof, said legging member having a lining member having slits therein, the rear edges of said vamp extending through said slits, said legging member also having a flap adapted to overlie the upper part of said vamp, when in closed position, substantially as set forth.
