UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC PI LES, OF YANKTON, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
OVERSHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,668, dated November 15, 1881.
ApplicationfiledJ'une 10,1881. (ModeL) To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC FILES, a citizen 01' the United States, residing at Yanktomin the county of Yankton, and Territory of Dakota, have invented Improvements in Heelless Overshoes, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement consists in applying an elastic strap or band to the vamp ofa heelless overshoe, so as to hold the said vamp closely on the shoe, the upper portion of the vamp being held in place on the shoe, either permanently by stitching or otherwise, or detachably by straps, in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In order that the invention may be fully understood I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my combined vamp and oversole. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, shown as applied to a shoe.
A is a half or over sole, of leather or other suitable material, to which is sewed or otherwise attached a vamp, B, the unattached loose back portions of which are connected by an elastic band or strap, 0. To each side of the narrow portion or shank a of the oversole A is sewed, riveted, or otherwise attached a strap, D D, which straps are of a length to pass over the instep and may be joined by buckle E or otherwise.
F is a band or strap for passing around the back of the shoe, and either sewed tightly to the rear edges of the straps D D or fixed ad- 5 justably thereto by buckle or otherwise.
It will be seen that by omitting the shank of the oversole and the straps D D F, I have a durable and cheap foxing and half-sole for covering a worn or thin shoe. This is used by being slipped over the old shoe, the vamp being sewed and the half-sole pegged or screwed to the shoe. The elastic band is of such a length as, when the overshoe is not in place on the foot, to draw the loose ends of the vamp together, so that when the shoe isinserted the elastic will hold the ends of the vamp, under tension, closely to the body of the shoe, by this means providing a tight fit under the instep a-nd vetleavingthe shoe sufficiently flexible to make the foot comfortable.
By extending the half-sole to the front of the heel by the addition of the shank portion a and adding the straps D D F, I provide a neat and durable overshoe for use in cold or wet weather.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The overshoe consisting of a vamp and half-sole, the ends or flaps of the vamp being left unattached and connected by an elastic band, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 7
2. In a heelless overshoe, the combination of oversole A a, vamp B, elastic G, and bucklestraps D D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A heelless overshoe consisting of oversole A a, vamp B, elastic O, buckle strap or straps D D, and band F, substantially as described.
ISAAG PILES.
