Be it known that I, ALBERT E. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overshoes, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and,

exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in rubber or elastic overshoes described in my Letters Patent of the United States No. 626,299, dated June 6, 1899, in which I employ a cord running entirely around the shoe below the upper margin to bind the shoe tightly upon the foot as the shoe is stretched by the insertion of the foot and to increase the tension thereon as the shoe is bent in the act of walking or the heel is raised for any reason above the ground, a position in which the heel of the overshoe is extremely likely to fall oif from the heel of the shoe and if the overshoe is low or a tip is likely to come oif entirely and bccome lost.

The objects of this invention are to make the shoe fit as tightly as can be borne and to provide additional means for positively securing it to the back of the heel or ankle.

My invention consists in fastening-straps secured to the body of the overshoe in such a manner as to draw the shank of the overshoe up into the hollow of the instep and into close engagement with the sole of the shoe to prevent water from entering therein.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved overshoe. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modified form of overshoe, showing a plaited cloth top. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the overshoe shown in Fig. 2.

In the views, 1 is the overshoe.

2 is the cord, which is shown as exterior to the overshoe in the rear and passing over the projecting portion of the heel, but 011 the inner surface thereof in the toe, so as to catch over the sole of the shoe when it is inserted therein. The cord is covered with a thin eoating of rubber.

3 represents straps which are inserted in the sides of the overshoe above the cord and are carried rearward Over the curve which unites the heel to the ankle and are there brought together and united by means of a buckle 4 Or other adjustable fastening device.

In Figs. 2 and 3 the heel of the overshoe is heightened by means of plaited cloth at 5 for comfort and warmth.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An overshoe adapted to cover the entire sole and heel, in combination with a cord inserted therein passing around the overshoe below the margin and passing over the projecting portion of the heel in the rear, in combination with holding-straps leading from the shank below the instep, adapted to pass Over the foot, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a rubber overshoe, of a cord passing entirely around the overshoe and embedded therein, and over the projecting portion of the heel, and means for raising the shank portion of the overshoe into contact with the shank of the shoe, substantially as described.

The combination with a rubber overshoe, of a plaited cloth rear portion, straps leading from the shank of the overshoe and embedded therein, below the margin thereof, and a cord passing entirely around the overshoe, and over the projecting portion of the heel and embedded therein, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a rubber overshoe, of a plaited cloth rear portion, and a strap attached to the shank portion thereof to close the plaited portion, and a cord passing entirely around the overshoe and over the projeeting portion of the heel, and embedded in the substance of the shoe, substantially as described.
