IMPROVEMENT lN BOOTS AND SHOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,660, dated June 17, 1879; application filed April 29, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK Cox, of the city of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the aecom 11 anying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe, showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a reverse View of the top of the same.

My improvement relates more particularly to button shoes. In such shoes the upper buttons have frequently to be removed and set forward or back to fit different-sized ankles, while the lower buttons, which fit over the foot portion, seldom require removal.

To obviate the removal ofthe upper buttons, I employ in their place an extension at the top of the shoe, and above the button-flap provided with a strap and buckle, by whichsaid extension can be bound closely around the ankle, whilethe ord iuary buttons are employed below.

In the drawings, A is the shoe. B is the button flap or fly. G C are the buttons, and D is the extension at the top of the shoe. This extension, which supplies the place of the upper buttons, is a strip of leather sewed in place to the shoe, and provided on one side with a strap, a, and buckle b, by which it may be closed tightly around the ankle. The upper edge may be scalloped, as shown in Fig. 1, pierced with holes, as shown. in Fig. 2, or otherwise ornamented, as may be desired.

By the means above described the buttons on theshoe seldom require removal or setting over, and seldom draw out by undue strain, since the lower buttons, resting over the foot, will fit almost any foot of a corresponding size to the shoe, and the extension with the buckle and strap can be adjusted to different-sized ankles.

In addition to the above, the top of the shoe is made close-fitting to the ankle, and can be drawn up at any time, obviating theopening and gaping of the top which occurs where buttons alone are used.

The improvement is adapted to mens and womens as well as childrens shoes.

The improvement above described can also be used advantageously on laced shoes and shoes having other fastenings, but not so effectively'as on button shoes.

If desired, two or more straps and buckles may be used at the top instead of one.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. As an improvement in the manufacture of boots and shoes, the extension D, attached to the ankle portion of the upper, and provided with an independent adjustable fastening or fastenin gs, whereby the leg portion of the shoe may be enlarged independent of the principal line of fastenings below, all substantially as shown and described.

2. A buttoned boot or shoe provided with an ankleextension, D, permanently attached thereto, and having an adjustable fastening or fas enings arranged on a line with the lower or button fastenin gs, all substantially as shown and described.
