No. 223,392. Patented Jan;
[lire/a2 N. PET RS. PHOTO-LITMQGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D. c.
i/iizzwsaa 42/ W I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. RYOKMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BATHlNG-SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,392, dated January 6, 1880.
Application filed May 27, 1879.
The toe and heel seams of the upper A are 7 To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. RYoKI/IAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathing-Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved bathing-shoe; Fig. 2, a top View of the blank or pattern from which the combined upper and insole is made; and Fig. 31s a top view of the pattern or blank for the front section of the shoe.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 4
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved bathing-shoe which is constructed on the, general principle of an Indian moccasin, but made in such a manner that acheap, neat, and tightly-fitting shoe is obtained, which excludes the sand and fits simply, yet tightly, to the foot.
The invention consists of a bathing-shoe the upper of which is cut in one piece with the insole and re-enforced by toe and heel tongues, while the insole is stiffened by an outer sole that is stitched to the under side of the insole portion of the blank. A top or front section connects the front parts of the upper, and is wider. at the top than at the lower part.
Any suitable fastening device closes the shoe tightly around the foot.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the upper of my improved bathing-shoe, which upper is made of a symmetrical pattern or,
re-enforced and protected by means of exterior tongues, O, which are stitched tothe upper A at both sides.
The upper A is closed by a top or front section, D, which is stitched to the front portion of the upper, and made narrow at the lower or toe end and wider at the upper end, so that the foot may be readily inserted into the shoe.
An outer overlapping portion, E, is sewed around the rear part or counter of the upper, and arranged with a' bi'ght for the fastening strap or band E.
The shoe is trimmed and finished in suitable manner, and forms aneatly-fitting and durable bathing-shoe, that is easily put on or taken off,
and that may be furnished at a considerably lower price than the cork and other bathingshoes at present in use. The same construction of shoe may also be applied to ladies slippers, on account of, the easy and comfortable fitting of the shoe to the foot.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bathing-shoe 1r ado of an upper, A, cut in one. continuous piece with the insole, of an outer sole, B, arid of a front section, D, that is narrow at the lower end and yvider at the top, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of an upper, A, cut in one continuous piece with the insole, and connected by toe and heel seams with an outer sole, B, seam-protecting toe and heel tongues C, and with a front section, D, that is stitched to the front portion of the upper, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses this 20th day of May, 1879.
WILLIAM J. RYOKMAN.
