INVENTUQ WITNEEEEE fi m M N. PETERS, Photoiilhugmphur, Washingnu. 11cv UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
THOMAS D. BARRY, OF RANDOLPH, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,756, dated April 5, 1887.
Application filed June 25,1886. Serial No. 206,250. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. BARRY, of Randolph, in the county of Norfolk or State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to machine sewed boots or shoes.
The invention consists of a boot or shoe having a channeled outer sole, an inturned upper lasted to the outer sole, and an inner sole channeled alongits ball portion, and severally secured together by stitches passing through the upper and said soles at and along the channels, and around the ball and toe of the soles, and through the upper and outer sole only at andalong the heel and shank of said sole, and the inner sole, at and around the heel, secured by nails or otherwise to the upper and outer sole, and at and alongthe shank left free and'unattached, and there of asize, as also at the heel, to conceal and cover the stitches attaching upper and outer sole together, all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section at the shank portion of a shoe, made in accordance with this invention; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
A is a channeled outer sole. B is an upper or vamp, and O is an inner sole, which is channeled only along its ball portion D. The channeling of outer and inner soles, above referred to, is to be in any of the usual and suitable forms, and the inner sole, 6, and upper or vamp B, with the upper turned inward, are first lasted along the channel of the inner sole and then the outer sole secured in place, as usual, with the edges of the upper at the shank drawn together, as hereinafter described, after which the. soles and upper are stitched togcther in a machine, the stitches passing through outer and inner soles and upper at and along the channels of both soles, andat and around the ball and toe portions, and through the outer sole only, and upper at and along the shank and around the heel, leaving the inner sole free and unattached at the shank, but secured, as well known, by nails or other'similar fastening devices, to the upper and outer sole at and around the heel. The inner sole is of a size at the heel and shank to conceal and cover the stitches there securing outer sole and upper together. The stitches which pass through the inner and outer soles, or only through the outer sole at their respective channels, are covered and concealed by the lip of the channel when it is turned down and secured in place.
In lasting the inner sole and upper, the inturned edges of the upper and at the shank portion of the sole, are secured by threads f, which are passed through the upper, and crossed from edge to edge thereof, Fig. 2.
A boot or shoe made as described is most flexible and pliable at the shank, and in its wear and use the stitches securing the soles and upper together, as described, which are presented to the foot at the heel, shank, and ball portions, are concealed and covered, as it is desirable, as well known, they should be. Further than this the inner sole at the heel is to have a heel-piece cemented to it, to cover the nails or other fastening devices securing inner sole to upper and outer sole..
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A boot or shoe constructed in the manner described, the same consisting of a channeled outer sole, an inwardly-turned upper or vamp lasted to the innersole, andan inner sole channeled along its ball portion, the parts being united by stitches passing through the inwardly-turned vamp and the soles, the line of stitching through both soles and the vamp being carried along the channels and around the ball and toe portions, but along the shank and around the heel being carried through the outer sole and upper only, leaving the inner sole free at the shank, and otherwise secured to the vamp and outer sole at the heel portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand inthe presence of two subscribing wit- 1 nesses.
