UNITED STATES JOSEPH F. FOSTER, OF JACKMAN, MAINE.
. MOCCASIN.
Application filed March 20,A 1923. Serial No. 626,327.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that JOSEPH F. FOSTER, a citizen o'l'l the United States, residing at Jackman, in the county of Somersetrand State of Maine, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moccasins, of which the following is a specification.
rThis invention relates to a moccasin and has for its principal object to provide a moccasin with a top portion which will enable the same to be kept on the foot of the wearer at all times and is furthermore constructed as to enable the same to be ad-l justable to the foot oi the wearer.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a moccasin of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexepnsive, strong, durable and well adapted for the purpose tor which it is designated.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a moccasin of the above mentioned character, which is formed of a single piece of material and is stitched together in such a manner that the stitching will not come in contact with the ground and thereby lessen the length of time the moccasin may be worn.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent duri-ng the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing Jforming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same z- Figure l is a side elevation of my moovasin showing a top portion secured thereto.
Figure 2 is a 'front elevation ot the 'front ot the moccasin and the top.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the saine.
Figure i is a detail sectional view on the line Ht of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is a view of the blank o'f mterial from which the moccasin proper is formed.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary plan View showing a modified form of seam arrangement for the toe ofthe moccasin.
Figure 7 is a detail rear elevation illustrating a modified seam arrangement `for the heel.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l designates my moccasin in general and the upper of the moccasin is designated by the numeral 2 in the drawings, and being formed of a single piece of material as shown in Fig. 5.v The vamp 3 as shown in the drawing is provided with a seam 4 and the outer' end of the seam 4 communicates with a transverse seam 5. These seams are formed upon the upper portion of the vamp 8 andl thereby preventing the same from coming in Contact with the ground when the same is worn. The heel portion or back portion of the moccasin l is provided with a vertical seam 6 extending from the upper edge of the upper of the moccasin and ex'-4 tends downwardly to a transverseseam 7 which extends a short distance from the bottom of the moccasin and around each side of the lower portion of the upper 2 of the moccasin l. rlhe purpose of having the seam 7 extending a short distance. from the bottom of the moccasin is to prevent the stitches in the seam 7 from becoming worn as is customary in wearing a moccasin whereby a portion of the heel is caused to be worn over.
A suitable counter or stiifening element 8 may be inserted-in the heel lportion of thevnpper 2 of the moccasin l and thereby further preventing the accidental wearing over of the heel portion and the seams in the back of the moccasin whereby the moccasin is held in proper position.
Secured to they upper edge of the upper 2 oi' the moccasin l are. the quarters 9 and 10. These quarters 9 and l() are fastened at their bottom ends or edges to the upper edges of the upper 2 of the moccasin l by any suitible means and in the present instance the same areconnected or fastened together by stitchings. The quarters 9 and 10 are stitched to the upper 2 from' the back or heel portion of the moccasin to the vamp 3 of the moccasin.
The quarters 9 and 10 are secured to each other by means of suitable stitchings at their lower back portions as more clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and the stitching extends from the bottom edges of the quarters to a point intermediate the bottom andV upper ends of the quarters. The upper portion of the quarters 9 and 10` are provided with eyelets or openings 1l and 12 respectively in their rear ends as more clearly shown in Fig. 3 and adapted to be received in these eyelets 1l and 12 is asuitable adalso provided with a series of eyelets. or'V a-pertures 14 and 15 respectively in .their open ends and they also receive a suitable lacing element 16 for the purpose of draivf' ing the open ends together. A tongue 17" is fastened to the vamp 3 ofthe moccasin 1 and is adapted to extend underneath of the lacing 16- and the open ends 14 and 15 of' the quarters 9 and 10iy I/hen it is desiredv to place the moccasin's on the feet of the wearer the lacings- 1G andv 13 are loosenedf so as to enable-the person to place his foot Within the inoccasin andi after the moccasin isV in place upon the foot of the vvearer the lacings 13 and 116 are then drawn together'and therebyY securely lioldj the moccasin in position upon the foot of the wearer. This will enable the person to comfortably Wear the moccasin andi at the same time prevent the moccasin from Wearing over and causing the seams of the moccasins by which the same are held;y together from coming in contact With the ground and preventing the indefinite use of the moccasin. n
A tap 17 may be provided or secured to the bottom of the inoccasin 1 for the purpose of further vrendering the longer use of the' moccasin and does notl add to the weightof the moccasin.
If necessary a strap 18 may beV provided and secured to themoccasin 1 so as to it over the instep of the person Wearing the same and the strap may also be buckled Whenever desired.V
In Figs. G and 7 a modified form of moccasin and upper the same being constructed and stitched together in the vamp by a seam fi and having the end thereof communicatp-'i C ing with diverging seams o iorniing a subn stantially Yseani as more clearly shown in Fig. v(3. The heel of the moccasin is provided With a vertical seam 6 extending from vthe upper of the inoccasin to the bottom thereof and a tab 7 is also formed at the base of the heel portion.
It Will thusvbe. seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a moccasin wherein the same may be used for an indefini'te period and is of such a construction asto prevent the accidental Wearing over on the sides of the moccasin and consequently openingof the seams by which the moccasin is held together and by providing a top for the moccasin the moccasin is adapted to. be more comfortably Worn and also acts as a bracing means for the ankles ofthe wearer.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved apparatus, it Will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and While I have particularly described the elements best adapted toperform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form,v proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted tov Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is n Y A moccasin of the class described having a sole andl upper formed of a single blank of material, cut and stitched together to. provide a I'"sliaped seam in the rear above the heel portion and a longitudinal and tivo lateral oppositely disposed seams on the vamp portion thereof, quarters having their lower edges stitched to the top edge of the upper of said moccasin, said quarters having their rear edges secured together for a short distance upwardly from the upper of the moccasin, the remaining portions of the rear edges and the front edges of said quarters being open, means for'connectingthe opened back and rear edges of said quarters and a strip encircling the sole and upper portions of said moccasin and extending over the vamp portion thereof, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I my signature.
JOSEP-'H F. FOSTER.
