ANDREWV GRAFF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEAMLESS SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,540, dated November 4, 1884-. Application filed April 10, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW GRAFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented pertain new and useful Improvements in Seamless Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as'will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot'this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of leather foot-wear wherein the shoe is formed of one piece of leather and the sole afterward sewed or otherwise aifixed thereto; and my improvements consist, essentially, of a shoe constructed of one piece of leather or othersuitable material without lining or insole, and having the seams turned outwardly and the counter and tip affixed to the outside, all as will be hereinafter fully' described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of shoe before being blocked, the dotted lines indicating a button piece for button-shoes; Fig. 2, a plan view of a low-cut shoe; Fig. 3, a side view of a high shoe complete without sole, Fig. 4, a similar view of a low-cut shoe without sole; and Fig. 5 represents the bottom of a shoe having a portion of the shoe cut away to show the manner of affixing the sole.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the 7 several figures indicate like parts.
In carrying out my invention the leather which is to form the shoe is first cut to the desired size and shape and soaked in water, lukewarm water preferably. It is then manbeing secured in place the shoe is ready for gether with the seam upon the outside and a block or last inserted, and the skin or leather 5 stretched to conform to theshape of said block or last. The leather is now allowed to remain until it becomes dry, when the heel-pieces or counter a is stitched on over the same in the heel. The sole, which may be of leather, rubber, or other suitable material, is then attached in place, and the upper leather stitched together, as shown at b,Figs. 3 and i. The usual tongue may be affixed, if desired, and the heel,
use.
The scam I) may be covered by an. ornamental strip of leather, as shown at 0 (Z, Figs. 3 and 4.
By means of myimprovements I am enabled to produce a shoe which is especially adapted for tender feet, as the foot is nowhere exposed to a seam and no lining is used in the construction of the shoe. The seams being sewed upon the outside of the shoe adapts it for use for pedestrians, baseball players, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- A shoe constructed of one piece of leather, having the seams upon the outside, and provided with the counter a and ornamental strips 0 02, also upon the outside, and the sole and heel affixed thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 7th day of April, 1884.
ANDRElV GRAFF.
